Background / History

Tongtian is one of the Three Pure Ones, beings formed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit and born with Heaven-Opening Merit and deep Fortune. He is distinguished by a forthright, generous disposition and is regarded as the brother most suited to accommodating Su Miao's lively temperament. 19

While investigating a hidden formation in the East Sea with Laozi and Yuanshi, Tongtian attempted to test its boundary directly. Yuanshi stopped him, warning that forcing entry could damage both the formation and those it protected; Tongtian withdrew, insisting that he knew his limits. 35

As Su Miao's Third Master, Tongtian cultivated her through sword demonstrations, excursions, practical techniques, escape arts, and protective talismans. Over ten thousand years of teaching, she developed a solid foundation in basic sword techniques and minor offensive, defensive, and escape arts. 61 64 68

After an extended seclusion, Tongtian emerged with greatly improved cultivation and Sword Dao attainment. Unable to tolerate Kunlun Mountain's silence any longer, he traveled the Prehistoric World to temper his Dao Heart, seek materials, and intervene against injustices. 102 103

During this journey, he rescued a Golden Pupils Treasure Seeking Rat from cultivators pursuing it for Moonlight Grass. Impressed by its courage and gratitude, he brought it to Kunlun as Su Miao's companion and named it Duobao. After Duobao transformed, Tongtian formally accepted him as his first personal disciple. 103 139

Appearance

Tongtian is a tall, upright man whose presence is repeatedly compared to an unsheathed sword. His usual spirited confidence can give way to a focused, dignified air when he works with formations or faces battle. 65 435 438

  • Black hair, often stirred by wind or sword intent. 219 566
  • Sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes. 220 435
  • Typically wears dark or sharply fitted robes. 65 219
  • His Sword Intent can manifest as an oppressive, invisible domain or innumerable visible sword shadows. 84 566

Personality

Tongtian is forthright, generous, and intensely unrestrained. He dislikes excessive caution, prefers immediate action, and finds long periods of quiet cultivation difficult to endure. His desire to explore, collect unusual materials, and act against perceived injustice keeps his Dao Heart lively. 19 102 103

He is playful and easily pleased by admiration, especially from Su Miao. He teaches through demonstrations, teasing, and practical correction rather than distant formality; he is equally happy to demonstrate Sword Qi as dragons and butterflies, critique a disciple's shovel technique, or pet transformed beast disciples. 62 287 437

Beneath his carefree behavior, Tongtian is protective and emotionally direct. He gives Su Miao personal Sword Qi talismans, reacts violently to threats against her, and promises that no one will bully Farm Teachings disciples while he is present. He can also become insecure when comparing his cultivation progress to Laozi and Yuanshi. 142 164 219 585

Abilities & Skills

Sword Dao

Tongtian possesses exceptional Sword Dao mastery, combining overwhelming killing intent with extremely precise control.

  • Shapes Azure Sword Aura into dragons, shields, light fish, butterflies, snakes, and other forms without harming the surroundings. 61 62
  • Uses sword intent as a defensive domain capable of grinding approaching Chaos airflow and hidden threats to dust. 84
  • Defeats hostile cultivators with a single restrained Sword Qi strike. 103
  • Can produce thousands of sword shadows, each expressing distinct aspects of the Sword Dao through different techniques. 566
  • His sword talismans carry enough killing intent to terrify Kunpeng and disperse clouds across ten thousand li. 201

Immortal Slaying Sword Formation

Hongjun granted Tongtian the Immortal Slaying Four Swords and their array diagram, an ancient killing formation of extraordinary power. 133

  • Comprises the Immortal Slaying Four Swords and a formation diagram. 133
  • Is described as unbreakable unless four beings of equal cultivation join forces. 133
  • Tongtian considers it the foremost formation for pure slaughter among the three great prehistoric formations. 330
  • Can be used indirectly: he spread the four swords' intent as a net over Beiming to obstruct Kunpeng without fully deploying the formation. 747

Formation Dao

Tongtian is a formation grandmaster whose work ranges from battle arrays to practical spatial infrastructure. 354 437

  • Taught Kong Xuan the Earth-Fire Returning Origin Formation to suppress the Immortal Volcano's subterranean fire. 611
  • Designed a teleportation array based on a Mother Disk and multiple Child Disks, enabling instant travel between connected anchors. 437 438
  • Built the array for both temporary transport and fixed long-term routes; permanent points require Array Stones, Spirit Stones, maintenance, and replacement. 437
  • Developed a stellar communication network that uses marked stars as receiving nodes, allowing Jade Talismans to transmit and store messages across the Prehistoric World and potentially the Sea of Chaos. 876

Teaching

Tongtian is an accessible, hands-on instructor who prioritizes comprehension and individual paths over rote study.

  • Taught Su Miao sword techniques, divine abilities, escape arts, and power control through repeated sparring. 64 168
  • Corrected Farm Teachings disciples across spirit-plant cultivation, artifact forging, Sword Dao, and practical combat methods. 285 287
  • Emphasizes that all three thousand Dao paths lead to the same destination, whether a disciple practices Sword Dao, Pill Dao, planting, or another discipline. 286
  • Encourages non-human disciples to find techniques suited to their innate forms; he taught a Moonlight Grass spirit that her “sword” could lie in her heart rather than her hands. 287
