Background
Laozi is the eldest of the Three Pure Ones, alongside Yuanshi and Tongtian. All three were transformed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit and inherited Heaven-Opening Merit, giving them exceptional fortune and standing in the Prehistoric World. 19 28
After the Dragon-Han Primordial Tribulation, he traveled the recovering world with his brothers. While Yuanshi wished to impose order and Tongtian eagerly interfered in what interested him, Laozi watched the rise and fall of all things as part of the natural Dao. 28
A Heavenly Dao revelation led the Three Pure Ones to the East Sea, where they discovered their father-daughter karma with Su Miao, the Root of World Purification. Laozi led the investigation, recognized that her hidden formation could not safely be forced open, and formally accepted her as a shared disciple after their meeting. 33 36 42 45
At Purple Cloud Palace, Laozi and his brothers became Hongjun's Personal Disciples. He later recognized that this status and the Primordial Violet Qi imposed invisible ties that siphoned their fortune, prompting the Three Pure Ones to seek a safer path beyond Hongjun's intended corpse-severing scheme. 117 120 134
Appearance
Laozi is a handsome, youthful-looking Daoist whose calm presence blends easily into his surroundings. Yin-Yang Qi flows around his hair and robes like faint gray-white currents; later appearances depict him with snow-white hair and warm golden eyes. 28 390 644
- Plain or gray-white Daoist robes, often bearing subtle cloud patterns. 28 270
- Clear eyes that reflect terrain, Earth Veins, spiritual qi, and the movements of living things. 28
- A Yin-Yang Fish Halo when expounding the Dao. 81
- An increasingly ordinary, almost mortal exterior after attaining Hunyuan, despite becoming the apparent center of heaven and earth. 218
Personality
Laozi is calm, detached, and contemplative. He favors balance, non-action, and allowing things to follow their natural course rather than imposing his will unnecessarily. His advice to Yuanshi—“Since Karma has come, observe it”—reflects his belief that resistance without understanding unsettles the Dao Heart. 34
His detachment does not make him indifferent to those close to him. He is notably indulgent toward Su Miao, protecting her inside his sleeve during Hongjun's sermon, trusting her warning over his own imminent enlightenment, and consistently allowing her to act so long as she does not defy Heaven or violate the Dao. 111 115 391
Laozi is patient and incisive as a teacher. He tends to answer questions with simple principles or counterquestions that force others to choose and understand their own paths. He also dislikes crowds and considers them bothersome despite his Saintly status. 230 641
Abilities & Skills
Dao of Yin-Yang and Non-Action
Laozi's Dao emphasizes the harmony of yin and yang, the natural evolution of all things, and governance through non-action. His words during Dao discussions can reveal the essential balance beneath seemingly opposing principles. 81 94
- Deduces karma, fortune, formations, and major shifts in the Prehistoric World's situation. 31 35 351
- Identified the danger of forcibly breaking the East Sea's Innate Grand Formation because it was intertwined with the island's life and cultivation. 36
- Analyzed Hongjun's plan to exploit Su Miao's Heaven Opening and absorb the dual Primordial Power of both worlds. 781
- Withholds information when it concerns heavenly secrets, including the identity and location of Fuxi's reincarnation. 627
Purification Dao Realm
Laozi can use his Dao realm to return corrupted beings to their original nature.
- Dissolved Calamity Fiend and Malevolent Qi from corrupted sea beasts without harming them. 35
- Perceives and appraises Purification Dao Rhymes and formation structures. 35 36
Alchemy
Laozi is renowned for alchemy and treats it as both a practical craft and a Dao path. 19
- Refined a Nine-Turn Golden Core from Purple Jade Lingzhi and other materials. 641
- Produced a simplified formula for Meng Po's Soup for the Underworld's operation. 442
- Recognizes materials suited to Yin-Yang and Creation-aligned alchemy. 426
- Allowed Ling Zhuzi to assist at his furnace, indirectly teaching him patience and alchemical skill over an extended period. 628
Corpse Severing
Laozi pioneered the Three Pure Ones' use of Same-Source Spiritual Treasures to avoid the risks hidden in Hongjun's method.
- Severed the Good Corpse, Taishang Laoweng, through the Ancient Flat Staff. 127
- Faced worldly strife, resentment, scheming, and injustice without rejecting them before severing Nameless, his Evil Corpse. 171
- Explains that Severing Corpses is not the removal of evil, but the understanding and acceptance of all aspects of oneself. 172
Saintly Protection and Restriction
After attaining Hunyuan, Laozi's presence alone carries immense pressure, though he can conceal all visible mana fluctuations. 218
- Uses the Profound Yellow Exquisite Small Pagoda to shield his group from Chaos and hostile observation. 94
- Reinforced the space inside his sleeve into a secure refuge for Su Miao. 111
- Established restrictions to obscure heavenly secrets and prevent eavesdropping during critical discussions. 172 427
- Stabilized Su Miao's breakthrough environment with a casual gesture from Supreme Purity Peak. 230

- Ancient Flat Staff — A Same-Source treasure used in the severing of Taishang Laoweng; it became connected to Taishang's Dao rhythm. 121 127
- Alchemy Furnace — His regular tool for refining pills, including the Nine-Turn Golden Core. 45 641

Trivia
- Laozi's everyday alchemy furnace was originally refined by Yuanshi. 45
- He treats priceless objects with striking casualness, telling Su Miao to “take it and play with it” when giving her the Primordial Violet Qi. 218
- Despite his composed image, he quietly enjoys watching Yuanshi and Zhunti's arguments escalate. 432
- His Evil Corpse is deliberately left without a fixed name because Laozi considers myriad evil thoughts too vast to confine within one title. 172
