Background

Laozi is the eldest of the Three Pure Ones, alongside Yuanshi and Tongtian. All three were transformed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit and inherited Heaven-Opening Merit, giving them exceptional fortune and standing in the Prehistoric World. 19 28

After the Dragon-Han Primordial Tribulation, he traveled the recovering world with his brothers. While Yuanshi wished to impose order and Tongtian eagerly interfered in what interested him, Laozi watched the rise and fall of all things as part of the natural Dao. 28

A Heavenly Dao revelation led the Three Pure Ones to the East Sea, where they discovered their father-daughter karma with Su Miao, the Root of World Purification. Laozi led the investigation, recognized that her hidden formation could not safely be forced open, and formally accepted her as a shared disciple after their meeting. 33 36 42 45

During Su Miao's early years on Kunlun Mountain, Laozi taught with calm practicality, provided Spirit-Nourishing and nourishing pills, and gained further insight into his own Great Dao through teaching her alongside his brothers. 63 64 He also encouraged her plan to accumulate Merit through benefiting the Prehistoric World rather than relying upon shortcuts or external objects. 76

At Purple Cloud Palace, Laozi and his brothers became Hongjun's Personal Disciples. He later recognized that this status and the Primordial Violet Qi imposed invisible ties that siphoned their fortune, prompting the Three Pure Ones to seek a safer path beyond Hongjun's intended corpse-severing scheme. 117 120 134

After successfully testing the Same-Source corpse-severing method, Laozi chose to continue using it as a path of self-understanding and transcendence. He regarded the severing of good and evil as necessary to perceive True Suchness, with the Dao of Non-Action and All-Action as the foundation of his path. 173

Personality

Laozi is calm, detached, and contemplative. He favors balance, non-action, and allowing things to follow their natural course rather than imposing his will unnecessarily. His advice to Yuanshi—“Since Karma has come, observe it”—reflects his belief that resistance without understanding unsettles the Dao Heart. 34

His detachment does not make him indifferent to those close to him. He is notably indulgent toward Su Miao, protecting her inside his sleeve during Hongjun's sermon, trusting her warning over his own imminent enlightenment, and consistently allowing her to act so long as she does not defy Heaven or violate the Dao. 111 115 391

Laozi is patient and incisive as a teacher. He tends to answer questions with simple principles or counterquestions that force others to choose and understand their own paths. He also dislikes crowds and considers them bothersome despite his Saintly status. 230 641

He values individual compatibility over rigid adherence to a prescribed route. When Su Miao wished to leave Kunlun to handle Farm Teachings affairs, he advised her to demonstrate her capability rather than simply asking Yuanshi for permission; similarly, he encouraged Duobao to decide whether seclusion or travel suited what he truly desired. 230 272

Though generally restrained, Laozi possesses a dry and understated sense of humor. He allowed Ling Zhuzi to fan his alchemy fire despite normally tending it himself, using the task to temper the spirit pearl's power and patience. 628
