| Hunyuan / Saint | 237 | Zhunti and Jieyin establish the Western Teachings through the West’s revival, accumulate merit, and attain Hunyuan together. 237 |
Background / History
Zhunti originated in the barren West with his martial brother Jieyin. Before becoming a Saint, he viewed the Heavenly Dao’s emergence as the West’s chance to rise and resolved to seize it. 82
He first meets Su Miao while trying to restore the West’s dying Earth Veins. Though initially struck by envy at her immense wealth of treasures, he conceals it behind an affable, humble manner and quickly recognizes the value of earning her goodwill. 145 His repeated attempts to nourish the Earth Veins and suppress Sha Qi demonstrate his commitment to the West, even though his method cannot solve the underlying problem. 146
Su Miao gives him Dust Purification Ferns capable of absorbing and transforming Sha Qi and Malevolent Qi. Zhunti vows to use them only to cleanse the West rather than against the East, then rewards her with a Twelve Petals Merit Golden Lotus seed. The ferns become a turning point in his hope for the West’s restoration. 147
After he and Jieyin attain Hunyuan, Zhunti learns that Hongjun’s methods and Primordial Violet Qi had been used to bind and drain the fortune of his disciples. The revelation deeply unsettles him, particularly because he considers himself skilled at scheming for resources yet recognizes Hongjun’s scheme as far more ruthless. 242 243
Zhunti and Jieyin subsequently sever the Western Teachings from the Xuan Sect and establish it as an independent faction. Zhunti accepts the expelled Duobao as his personal disciple and promises him a central future role in the new teaching. 251 252
Appearance
Zhunti is a tall, broad-shouldered man with a narrow waist, powerful build, loose silver-white hair, and amber-gold eyes. 145 387
- Initially wears a plain, worn blue Daoist robe while laboring to restore the West’s Earth Veins. 145
- Later favors loose, ornate robes embroidered with golden Sanskrit and lotus motifs; their collars are notably open. 387
- Often carries a fly whisk and is associated with golden Buddha light and seven-colored radiance. 389 402 411
- His Bodhi Daoist identity presents him as a peak Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal rather than a Saint. 391 392
Personality
Zhunti is calculating, opportunistic, and exceptionally pragmatic. The poverty of the West taught him to pursue resources, talent, and alliances wherever he can find them; he calls this blunt survival instinct a “Western specialty.” 145 250 He is willing to exploit an opening, whether by collecting overlooked materials in a ruined treasury or using political pressure against Hongjun. 404 688
Despite this greed, his ambition is tied closely to restoring the West and building the Western Teachings. He treats Su Miao’s gifts and protection as the beginning of the West’s revival, and he seeks scarce innate materials specifically for Western use. 147 426 714
He is also playful and provocative, especially toward Yuanshi. Zhunti repeatedly needles Yuanshi over Su Miao, couches barbs in courteous language, and enjoys watching the normally reserved Saint lose composure. 431 432 439 Beneath this teasing exterior, he can be protective, perceptive, and sincere: he aids Su Miao against the Blood Sea, supports her aspirations, and eventually resolves his longstanding debt to Hongyun. 411 439 569
