History

Third Shinobi World War

Konoha was a central battleground during the Third Shinobi World War and was described as being pushed to the brink, prompting the Hyuga Clan to mobilize in full 2. The war gradually wound down after the Battle of Kusagakure and the anticipated peace treaty with Iwagakure 3.

Minato Namikaze was elected Fourth Hokage with 95% of the Jonin vote following Orochimaru's defection 31. His death during the Nine-Tails' attack left Konoha without its Fourth Hokage; Hiruzen Sarutobi subsequently took responsibility for Naruto Uzumaki and imposed secrecy around Minato's legacy 55.

Kumogakure Crisis

A Kumogakure delegation secretly planned to abduct a Hyuga Main Family member for the Byakugan. The delegation was annihilated inside Konoha, and intelligence recovered from its members exposed the plot 100 101. The incident triggered village-wide war preparations, with the Hyuga Clan pledging to participate 102.

Konoha's leaders initially believed the massacre and earlier attacks on Naruto were the work of an unknown internal faction 101. In reality, Hyuga Baiyue had acted independently to prevent unrest while pursuing his own objectives 80 100.

Konoha Crush and Succession Crisis

During the Chunin Exams, Sound and Sand shinobi launched the Konoha Crush while Orochimaru confronted Hiruzen within the Four Violet Flames Formation 168 169. Hiruzen died in battle, while Baiyue captured the Reaper Death Seal and killed Orochimaru 170.

The loss of the Third Hokage opened a contentious search for a successor. Baiyue was nominated for the position due to his strength, his earlier suppression of the Nine-Tails, and his defeat of Orochimaru, but he initially rejected the office as troublesome 177 180.

Fifth Hokage Administration

Baiyue ultimately became Konoha's Fifth Hokage. He dismissed Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura from their advisory positions, delegated most administrative work to Shikaku Nara, and sought to bring Tsunade and Jiraiya into his administration 199 208.

His rule shifted Konoha toward open military expansion. Baiyue personally forced Sunagakure to submit, declared Sunagakure erased as an independent village, and incorporated its shinobi into Konoha 205 206.

Konoha later absorbed Kirigakure as well. Its Jonin and Special Jonin were transferred to Konoha, while Mei Terumi became a Hokage advisor representing the former village's interests 250.

• Hyuga Clan — Konoha's Byakugan users provide a major reconnaissance advantage in intelligence warfare; their importance also makes the Hyuga Main Family a priority protection target 6 15.
