Background / History

Tang San founded the Tang Sect approximately ten thousand years before the present-day mortal storyline. By the time he watches the new generation from the God Realm, the sect has declined. He considers its hidden weapons superior to Soul Tools and blames later disciples for failing to reproduce weapons such as the Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus and Rainstorm Pear Blossom Needle 7.

After ascending, Tang San accumulated influence through his two Godhoods, the former Sea God and Asura God’s prestige, and his Shrek Seven Devils companions. His faction became the God Realm’s second-largest power bloc, behind Destruction’s faction. Their disagreement over expansion—Destruction favored expansion, while Tang San wanted to wait until after an anticipated disaster—divided the gods 645.

His mortal legacy becomes a subject of dispute. Xue Nianbing argues that Tang San’s failure to clarify the exceptional nature of his Blue Silver Martial Soul encouraged later Tang Sect members to waste resources cultivating ordinary Blue Silver Grass. Tang Ya and Beibei initially defend their ancestor, but Tang Ya later reforms the sect’s inherited restrictions and permits wider teaching of its techniques 24 25 99.

Appearance

  • Face: A projected scene describes him as handsome enough to resemble a woman 692.
  • Sea God manifestation: While wielding the Sea God’s Trident, his presence evokes endless oceans rolling behind him 611.
  • Corrupted state: His sacred sea-blue Divine Power darkens toward black, his eyes become bloodshot, and the Sea God’s Eight Wings emit foul Evil Power 689.

Personality

Tang San combines careful planning with a conviction that he should direct other people’s futures. He conceals the emergence of a potential new God King from his peers and sees that person’s connection to Shrek Academy as an opportunity to apply another control scheme. His dealings with former companions increasingly resemble those of a superior managing subordinates rather than an equal among friends 7 411.

He repeatedly justifies coercion and betrayal as necessities for the God Realm. This culminates in devouring Destruction and Evil, then claiming they voluntarily sacrificed themselves to empower him. His composure also deteriorates when events escape his control: he recklessly confronts the Golden Dragon King, becomes frantic when evidence is shown to Xiao Wu, and denies wrongdoing even after his actions are publicly exposed 612 674 675 691 692.

His affection for Xiao Wu remains a major vulnerability. Threats to her force him to comply with Destruction’s demands, while his later defense appeals directly to his promise to protect her and their daughter. Nevertheless, he conceals Tang Wutong’s soul division from Xiao Wu and uses their daughter as part of his plans 610 615 692.

Abilities & Skills

Dual Divine Positions

  • Holds both the Sea God and Asura God positions and can switch between them almost instantly 6 611.
  • Sea and Asura Divine Power coexist through years of cultivation 689.
  • Adding Destruction and Evil Divine Power disrupts that balance; acquiring Space Divine Power worsens the conflict 689.
  • Xiao Wu serves as the “scabbard” of the Asura God Position, giving Destruction leverage against him when she is held hostage 609.

Asura Sword Techniques

  • Asura Slash produces a blood-red sword beam; with the combined Power of the Gods, its attack power rises above God King level 414.
  • Isolated strikes cannot overcome the Ice Mist’s regeneration. Sustained cutting eventually creates an opening through which divine power can enter the realm 414 610.
  • The Asura Sword can hold that opening, but doing so prevents Tang San from recalling it for combat 610.

Devouring

  • His External Soul Bone, the Eight Spider Lances, originally possessed a devouring attribute and later evolved into the Sea God’s Eight Wings 41 672.
  • The divine wings consume flesh and souls; they cannot indiscriminately devour everything 672.
  • Uses them to recover his strength, absorb other gods’ Divine Power, and drain the Golden Dragon King through its wounds 674 675 687.
  • Consumption does not guarantee compatibility: Evil Power corrupts the wings and intensifies his violent impulses 689.

Divine Sense and Soul Manipulation

  • Observes the lower realm, makes deductions about emerging divine candidates, and communicates privately through Divine Sense 6 7 413.
  • Leaves Divine Sense links associated with his daughter and parents, though these are later destroyed 614 615.
  • Extracts Tang Wutong’s soul and splits it into two halves, retaining one and sending the other to the Clear Sky Sect 692.
  • Cannot penetrate the Ice Dragon Seal; the Golden Ancient Tree later also blocks God Realm surveillance of Douluo Continent 411 614.

Martial Souls and Other Techniques

  • Possesses Twin Martial Souls associated with the Clear Sky Hammer and an exceptional Blue Silver Martial Soul, rather than ordinary Blue Silver Grass 24 25.
  • Uses Blue Silver Bind, the Clear Sky Hammer, Eight Spider Lances, A Thousand Years of Leisure, and Gone Forever against the encroaching ice; none stops his palace from freezing 13.
  • Gains teleportation after consuming the God of Space 689.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Asura Sword — Super Divine Artifact used for Asura attacks and maintaining an opening in the Ice Mist 286 610.
  • Sea God’s Trident — Super Divine Artifact used in his Sea God form; replaces the Asura Sword as the anchor for the opening under Evil’s compromise 611.
  • Sea God’s Eight Wings — Evolved from the Eight Spider Lances; becomes a Super Divine Artifact after he devours two God Kings 672 687.
  • Asura Divine Armor — Helps him survive the Golden Dragon King’s direct attack, but cracks under the impact 612.
  • Taken Godhoods and equipment — Collects Evil’s Godhood, Divine Armor, and artifact after consuming him; later takes the Godhoods of Sloth, Wrath, and Gluttony after their deaths 674 675 687.

Relationships

  • Xiao Wu — Wife and initially unconditional supporter. Destruction uses her as leverage; the exposure of Tang San’s treatment of their daughter leaves her devastated and unable to defend him 413 610 692 693.
  • Tang Wutong / Wang Dong’er — Daughter whose soul he divides to advance his plans. Wang Dong’er develops from the half sent to the Clear Sky Sect and publicly rejects him as her father 614 687 692.
  • Xue Nianbing — Intended recruit and eventual sworn enemy. Xue seals the God Realm in response to Tang San’s interference, later strips away his stolen powers and oversees his public exposure 653 691 692.
  • God of Destruction — Principal political rival and occasional crisis ally. Tang San ultimately ambushes and devours him, though Destruction sends a divine soul fragment toward the lower realm 645 674 675.
  • God of Evil — Mediates earlier conflicts and helps protect Tang San against the Golden Dragon King. Tang San later murders him through the Eight Wings 611 612 674.
  • Goddess of Life — Initially leans toward supporting him, then recognizes his manipulation and helps expose his crimes 645 691.
  • God of Goodness — Injured during the failed passage through the seal; later condemns Tang San when evidence of his murders is presented 286 691.
  • Golden Dragon King — Enemy who humiliates and severely injures him, then proposes a temporary alliance. Both plan betrayal; Tang San eventually attempts to devour him 283 612 673 687.
  • Dai Mubai — Former teammate and faction ally. Tang San covers for his conduct to prevent his relationship with Zhu Zhuqing from weakening their faction 411.
  • Ma Hongjun — Former teammate whose Martial Soul defect Tang San helped resolve. Tang San also uses the prospect of resurrecting his beloved to secure his service 453 615.
  • God of Emotion — Former friend who tries to stop Tang San’s collapse, then condemns his treatment of Tang Wutong 689 692.
  • Tang Ya — Successor leading the Tang Sect. Initially defends him, but later establishes new rules rather than remaining bound by ancestral authority 24 99.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The New God King Star

Tang San identifies a mysterious new divine candidate on Douluo Continent, more promising than an earlier emerging star. Once he deduces a connection to Shrek Academy, he shifts his attention toward controlling the candidate and linking that destiny to the Tang Sect’s revival 6 7.

The Ice Dragon Seal

Ice spreads through the Sea God’s Palace despite Tang San’s attacks. He blames the Dragon Clan for the ensuing God Realm crisis, provoking Destruction’s suspicion. The God Kings seek information from the imprisoned Golden Dragon King, who demands that Tang San kneel and apologize before cooperating 13 14 283.

An attempted passage involving Life and Goodness ends disastrously: Tang San’s Asura Divine Sense and the Golden Dragon King’s manipulation contribute to their severe injuries. Destruction and Evil retaliate against Tang San, beating him into retreat 286.

Seizing the Power of the Gods

Tang San organizes his allies and a hidden contact to intercept the collected divine power. Destruction counters by threatening Xiao Wu. After repeated failed strikes, Tang San eventually cuts an opening in the Ice Mist, returns the borrowed power, and accepts a compromise over which artifacts will keep the opening stable 413 414 610 611.

The freed Golden Dragon King then attacks. Tang San’s attempt to meet it head-on leaves him gravely injured, and Destruction and Evil must rescue him 612.

Lost Contact with Douluo Continent

Tang San discovers that his Divine Sense links are gone and that his parents have died. He also believes the disappearance of Wang Dong’er’s link means half his daughter’s soul has perished; later events show Wang Dong’er alive. He conceals his losses and suspects the Silver Dragon King 614 690.

He helps arrange the descent of five former Shrek companions to investigate the continent, recruit its foremost genius, and locate the missing God Kings and Silver Dragon King 615.

Devouring the God Kings

Accepting the Golden Dragon King’s proposal, Tang San lures Destruction and Evil into a concealed meeting under the pretext of activating a sealing artifact. He instead pierces them with his Eight Wings and consumes them. Destruction’s escaping soul fragment leaves a route for the truth to reach the lower realm 673 674 675.

Tang San claims the two willingly sacrificed themselves, threatens dissenters with accusations of treason, and takes control of the Divine Realm. He then arranges a supposedly staged battle with the Golden Dragon King while secretly intending to consume it 675 676.

Corruption and Public Reckoning

During the battle, Tang San’s allies suffer devastating losses and increasingly suspect that he is using the Golden Dragon King to remove rivals. His incompatible Divine Powers overwhelm his judgment; he kills the God of Space and begins pursuing former friends as sources of power 687 688 689.

The returning gods confront him, and Bing Yi’s awakening leaves him immobilized. Xue Nianbing exposes the murder of Destruction and Evil, removes Tang San’s stolen powers, and allows Wang Dong’er to present evidence of her soul division before the gods and Xiao Wu. Tang San remains alive, restrained, and increasingly isolated as his denials fail 690 691 692 693.
