Background / History

Klein and Luther were colleagues in Tingen. During an early incident at Blackthorn Security Company, Klein treated Luther’s terrifying premonition as credible and offered to divine the threat rather than dismiss him. 10

After both men were presumed dead, Klein physically escaped his coffin and eventually resurfaced in Backlund as the detective Sherlock Moriarty. There, he and Luther discovered beneath Backlund Bridge that they were fellow transmigrators: Klein had arrived through a ritual, while Luther identified himself as Li Ran. 170 172

As Sherlock, Klein investigated supernatural cases while maintaining the identities of Mr. Fool and The World within the Tarot Club. His work on the missing obstetrician Rian Thomas led him to Lanevus; Klein and Luther subsequently pursued and killed Lanevus, though Luther was left in severe pain and madness after extracting an unknown force from him. 232 243

Personality

Klein is methodical, cautious, and highly conscious of supernatural risk. When he received a letter apparently written by another transmigrator, he refused to open it immediately, inspected it above the Gray Fog, and attempted divination before deciding whether to attend the proposed meeting. 168

He is uncomfortable with indiscriminate violence and prefers criminals to be captured and judged by the Churches. This places him at odds with Luther’s willingness to execute everyone he considers guilty, particularly after the Capim Villa massacre. 192

Despite his suspicion of Luther’s secrecy and instability, Klein recognizes that he keeps equally dangerous secrets. He repeatedly chooses guarded cooperation over betrayal, eventually sharing his identity as The World with Luther while keeping his identity as Mr. Fool concealed. 107 409

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Lanevus Investigation

Klein accepted Allen Chris’s request to find the missing obstetrician Rian Thomas, connected the case to Lanevus, and tracked the missing doctor into Backlund’s slums. He brought the resulting lead directly to Luther, beginning their pursuit of Lanevus and the Evil God’s offspring. 232 233

During the final confrontation, Klein observed from a distance because Lanevus’s divine corruption posed a greater danger to him than to Luther. After Luther killed Lanevus, Klein recovered the painful white rib-like item from the corpse, concealed the scene from divination, and escaped with the mentally unstable Luther. 243

The World and the Blood Bishop

Klein left Backlund under the Gehrman Sparrow identity after Luther’s attack on the royal palace made the Blood Bishop internationally notorious. He remained concerned for Luther’s survival and recognized that Luther might eventually identify The World as Klein. 401

Luther confronted The World directly during a Tarot Club gathering. Klein confirmed his identity, and the two agreed to act as strangers before the other members while privately exchanging intelligence and supporting each other’s advancement. 408 409

Bayam Operations

Operating at sea as Gehrman, Klein coordinated with Luther against threats surrounding Helene Sauron and Trissy. He obtained Helene’s blood for Luther, infiltrated Trissy’s flagship while disguised as Helene, and fought Trissy before the Blood Pirates escalated the conflict. 522 524

Klein later used the Sea God’s Scepter to create an artificial storm that drew Sea King Jahn Kottman away from Bayam, enabling Luther’s infiltration of the Governor’s Mansion. 496

Aurora Order and Ancient Mysteries

Klein and Luther investigated the Aurora Order, Ince Zangwill, the Antigonus Family Notebook, and the ancient conspiracies connected to Adam, Medici, and the Twilight Hermit Order.
