Background / History

During Konoha's border mobilization, Hiruzen Sarutobi assigned Jiraiya to command the defense of the Land of Wind border and prevent Sand ninja from entering the Land of Fire 27.

Jiraiya became Naruto Uzumaki's teacher and placed great faith in Naruto as a future reformer who would bring peace to the ninja world. When Naruto sought Sage Mode training, Jiraiya initially opposed Karot's influence, believing Naruto should follow the path he had planned. Karot challenged him for overlooking Naruto's wishes and failing to prepare him against the Akatsuki; Jiraiya ultimately arranged Naruto's training at Mount Myōboku 71.

While investigating Pain, Jiraiya fought alongside Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima but was ambushed and severely injured. Karot intervened immediately before Pain could kill him, teleporting Jiraiya to safety 74. After recovering enough to move during Pain's attack on Konoha, Jiraiya confronted Pain again and continued protecting Naruto despite his injuries and his personal hesitation toward fighting his former student 76 239.

Jiraiya later acted to protect Tsunade during Urashiki's attack, taking a blow meant for her. Tsunade admitted that she loved him; Jiraiya had been feigning greater injury to finally hold her hand and hear her answer 167. The two subsequently married, with Orochimaru, Karot, Sakumo, and Kakashi attending their wedding 214.

When Konan returned to Konoha seeking revenge for Nagato, Jiraiya sheltered his former student and personally appealed to Orochimaru to spare her life. Orochimaru agreed to meet Konan and promised she would not be killed, though she would still face consequences for her actions 277.

Personality

Jiraiya is deeply protective of his students and comrades. Even when facing Pain—his former disciple Yahiko—he resisted with his life to keep Naruto's location and information safe 76. His guilt over Yahiko and Nagato's path drives him to seek safety for Konan despite her past hostility toward Konoha 257 277.

He is also impulsive, theatrical, and frequently embarrassing. His bathhouse peeping repeatedly provokes Karot and Tsunade, while his fixation on Tsunade makes him especially vulnerable to Karot's manipulation 147 148. Beneath the comedy, he can acknowledge his failures and reconsider his convictions when confronted with them 71 75.
