The Four Gods

God Domain and distinguishing traits
Khorne Slaughter and war; manifests a battlefield desert and commands disciplined daemon legions. He welcomes the escalation of Abaddon’s war 119 167 263 264.
Tzeentch Change and schemes; manifests a Crystal Labyrinth and attacks with shifting spells and illusions. He delights in unforeseen change, even when it disrupts a shared plan 119 263 264 323.
Slaanesh Pleasure and desire; resides in the Six Rings and manifests a decadent palace. It seeks extreme sensation and preys upon Eldar souls 29 119 263 323.
Nurgle Decay, plague and the cycle of life and death; manifests a diseased garden. He is protective of his daemonic “children” 119 131 194 263.

Nature

Cegorach distinguishes the Four Gods’ individual wills from the Warp concepts that sustain them. In his analogy, Chaos is the “hardware”—forces such as war, change, life and desire—while the gods are the “software”: conscious personalities attached to those forces. He argues that their wills could be destroyed without destroying the underlying concepts. Rowan interprets the Emperor’s ancient wounding of the gods as a precedent, though Cegorach warns that new wills can arise and that the gods now avoid committing all their wills to physical vessels together 326.

The Warp’s nonlinear nature also complicates their origins. Cegorach explains that, although Slaanesh’s birth followed the Eldar’s fall from the material universe’s perspective, Slaanesh already existed from the Warp’s perspective and was awakened by that event 326.

Abilities & Limits

Divine domains and Warp power

  • The gods can unfold their realms within the Warp and project attacks from them. Their four domains surround Rowan during their joint confrontation 263 264.
  • Their simultaneous attention causes severe psychic disturbances across the galaxy, affecting Terra’s Astropaths, Eldar seers and Ork Weirdboyz 264.
  • With the Great Rift unopened and the Veil intact, they cannot project power on a large scale into the material universe under ordinary conditions 250.

Corruption and influence

  • The gods exert pressure through Warp whispers and attempt to corrupt Rowan when they surround him 263.
  • They empower servants and campaigns: all four support Abaddon’s Thirteenth Black Crusade, while their combined blessing strengthens him 119 275.
  • Working together, they corrupt a Crone Sword as part of a trap tied to Ynnead’s attempted ascension 323.

Survival and vulnerability

  • Direct attacks on a god’s domain can cause lasting damage. Nurgle withdraws to repair his Garden after Rowan’s invasions, and all four intensify their assault when Imperial forces begin eroding their realms 268 323.
  • Rowan can purify aspects of their power into golden energy that strengthens the Emperor. He later uses a fragment of Abaddon’s soul and Abaddon’s shared blessings to draw power from all four 268 281.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Abaddon’s crusade: Moriana’s prophecy reports that all four gods support Abaddon’s Thirteenth Black Crusade, though each has different interests in its outcome. Their intervention helps his fleet enter the Pandorax system by an unexpected route 119 263.
  • Confrontation with Rowan: As Guilliman’s fleet closes on Abaddon, the gods unite to protect their forces. They surround Rowan in the Warp, attack him jointly, then try to sever his link to the Emperor and strike his fleet in realspace 263 264.
  • Assaults on their domains: Rowan sends Lucia, Sibyl, Belisarius Cawl and Commissar Yarrick into the four realms. As those forces damage the domains, the gods abandon probing attacks and turn their full power on Rowan 265 268.
  • Cadia and Abaddon’s defeat: The gods concentrate on breaking Cadia’s defenses, ultimately leaving Abaddon’s position untenable. After his death, Rowan turns the fragment of his soul into a means of draining their power 270 281.
  • The Crone Sword scheme: The four prepare a corrupted sword for Ynnead’s resurrection ritual, intending to redirect the resulting power and shatter the Webway near Terra. Rowan’s intervention causes the ascension to fail; Slaanesh is furious, while Tzeentch enjoys the unexpected result 322 323.
  • Continuing threat: The gods obstruct the Emperor’s foresight and act in closer concert than during the Great Heresy. Rowan subsequently seeks a way to destroy their wills rather than the Warp forces beneath them 309 326.
