Background
Yarrick first appears as the Commissar Colonel of the Armageddon Steel Legion’s 252nd Regiment, commanding an armored force outside an Ork-held Hive City. Rowan recognizes him as the future savior of Armageddon and immediately values his expertise, while Yarrick regards himself as an ordinary Commissar confronting an impossible urban campaign. 40 41
He refuses to throw away soldiers in an unwinnable assault, instead detailing the armor needed to clear infantry, breach defenses, and navigate the Hive City. Rowan fulfills these requests with an immense armored deployment and mass-produced rose rosaries, giving Yarrick the resources to launch his offensive. 42 46 47
After the Ork Warboss is defeated and the enemy routs, Rowan recruits Yarrick for his broader mission to change the Imperium. Yarrick openly condemns the Imperium’s bureaucracy, supply failures, and the suffering of its people, then accepts a captured and modified Ork WAAAGH! Field without hesitation. 61
The field sends him through a genuine trial in an Ork Warp domain. There, he kills countless Orks, loses his right arm fighting Warboss Ulgud, decapitates Ulgud with a Chainsword, and becomes recognized across the Orks’ collective consciousness as “Warboss Yarrick.” 62
Upon returning, Yarrick joins Rowan’s team and requests Ork-derived cybernetic enhancements rather than a simple restoration of his arm. His resulting mechanical claw and Cybernetic Eye transform him into an exceptionally dangerous combatant while preserving his identity as an Imperial Commissar. 63 65
Appearance
Yarrick is a stern, hard-featured Commissar whose military bearing remains rigid even in unfamiliar or absurd situations. He wears the black uniform and greatcoat associated with his office, along with a black-and-red cap bearing gold filigree and a skull emblem. 40 64
- Chiseled, cold-hardened face and tightly pressed lips. 40
- Black Imperial Commissar uniform and greatcoat. 40 64
- Massive mechanical Power Claw on his right arm after joining Rowan. 65
- Cybernetic Eye capable of emitting destructive energy beams. 65
- His claw is often described as especially fearsome when stained with blood. 238
Personality
Yarrick is disciplined, blunt, and intensely practical. When Rowan proposes taking the Hive City, he immediately explains why the operation cannot succeed under the available conditions rather than offering empty confidence. His decisions are guided by military reality and the preservation of soldiers’ lives, not ceremonial ideals of sacrifice. 41 42
He is also adaptable to an extraordinary degree. Although he hates Orks and remains wholly committed to humanity, he accepts the WAAAGH! Field and Ork cybernetics because they make him more effective against humanity’s enemies. 61 63
Yarrick’s loyalty does not prevent him from criticizing the Imperium. He condemns its bureaucracy, corruption, supply failures, and the misery inflicted upon ordinary citizens, but accepts Rowan’s cause because he wants the Imperium changed rather than merely denounced. 61
