Background / History
Chaos is rooted in the Warp, a dimension described as pure emotion and desire. Its influence manifests through corruption, daemonic incursions, cult activity, Warp rituals, and armies of traitor Astartes. Its four principal gods are Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh, and Nurgle, whose realms can directly unfold within the Warp. 29 263
The forces of Chaos repeatedly oppose Rowan and his allies from their arrival in the Warhammer universe. A Slaaneshi warband attacks an Imperial ship in the Sol Sector, deploying Chaos Space Marines, cultists, a sorcerer, and a corrupted strike cruiser. Rowan prevents a Warp-rift incursion, helps purge the cruiser, and later uses the Emperor’s power to remove its Chaos corruption. 4 6 7 30
By the time of the Thirteenth Black Crusade, Chaos gathers behind Warmaster Ezekyle Abaddon and the Black Legion. The Four Gods support Abaddon because his campaigns weaken the Imperium, though Abaddon regards their power as a tool rather than accepting permanent submission to them. 119 213
During the Pythos and Cadian conflicts, the Four Gods personally intervene against Rowan in the Warp. Their combined assault fails to break him; Rowan counters by sending Imperial forces into each god’s divine realm and converting hostile Warp power into the Emperor’s golden light. 263 264 265 268

- Corruption — Chaos can corrupt vessels, machine spirits, mortal personnel, Astartes, and entire worlds. 4 30 254
- Fragmented unity — Its factions are often divided by patron god, personal ambition, and rivalries, but the Four Gods can unite behind a shared objective. 119 212 264
- Reliance on champions — Chaos empowers mortal and Astartes agents such as Abaddon, cult leaders, sorcerers, daemon princes, and Chaos Lords. 119 159 213
