Background / History
Slaanesh's nature stems from the extreme pursuit of beauty and ultimate experience. Cegorach distinguishes the god from desire itself: desire is an underlying, neutral concept, while Slaanesh is an independent malicious will attached to it, formed through the obsessions and fears of countless souls 136 326.
Although associated with the Eldar's fall, Slaanesh did not simply begin existing at that moment. According to Cegorach, the Warp's non-linear time means that Slaanesh had always existed from its perspective; the Eldar's corruption awakened it. Since their fall, Slaanesh has ceaselessly devoured Eldar souls 322 326.
The Emperor's ancient confrontation with Horus provides a precedent for damaging the Chaos Gods' wills without destroying Chaos itself. Rowan concludes that those wills were wounded or suppressed, followed eventually by new incarnations. Having learned from that defeat, the gods now avoid committing all their wills to physical vessels simultaneously 326.
Appearance
Slaanesh is depicted as elegant and captivatingly androgynous, with bodily features that can twist and change 29 323.
- Six distinct eyes: Their forms include burning violet flames, deep vortices, and alluring glazed crystal. Some reflect hidden desires; others magnify the emotions of whatever they behold 29.
- Six forked tongues: Iridescent and ectoplasmic, used to lick the Veil of reality while directing its gaze toward Macragge 145.
- Shifting limbs: During its failed attempt to recover escaped prey, its hand changes continuously while pink-purple power boils between its fingers 323.
Personality
Slaanesh values extreme sensation more than conventional victory. Moriana describes the god as indifferent to the outcome of Abaddon's undertaking so long as it produces an extreme sensory experience. Rowan likewise attributes his early survival partly to Slaanesh's absorption in pleasure and careless attention to mortal affairs 119 131.
Its appetite is accompanied by intense possessiveness. Slaanesh ordinarily guards Eldar souls jealously, reluctantly agreeing to share them with the other gods only because it expects its ancient connection to the Eldar to secure the largest portion 323.
Repeated interference by Rowan turns anticipation into humiliation and rage. Slaanesh reacts to the collapse of its resurrection trap by grasping futilely through the Warp and blaming Tzeentch, whose delight in the unforeseen outcome only worsens their disagreement 323.
Divine Domain
The Six Rings of Slaanesh form concentric circles representing extreme emotions. The Lord of Pleasure's private bedchamber lies at their heart 29.

- Miriael Sabathiel resides within the Six Rings and communicates with Malven through a ritual vessel 17.
- Fulgrim inhabits the domain but becomes bored and seeks fresh entertainment through Magnus's plans 248.
- Slaanesh manifests its decadent palace around Rowan during the Four Gods' joint confrontation 263.
Abilities & Skills
Desire and Emotional Influence
Slaanesh's eyes and divine presence expose or intensify desire, pleasure, and pain 29 145.
- Its howl over Macragge creates immense waves in the Warp's sea of desire, causing pleasure and pain to resonate throughout it 145.
- Alongside the other Chaos Gods, it pressures Rowan with Warp whispers intended to influence or corrupt him 263.
- Its temptations fail to move Belisarius Cawl when Imperial forces invade its realm 265.
Blessings and Corruption
Slaanesh grants power to favored servants, including Miriael Sabathiel, the first fallen Battle Sister and a Slaaneshi Daemon Prince 3 21.
- Miriael's blessings give her a seductive aura capable of severely corrupting the souls of those who look directly at her 21 22.
- Through Miriael, negative emotions can be amplified until they undermine a victim's resolve. Lucia's protection and Leonardo's resistance make them unusually difficult targets 25.
- Slaaneshi corruption extends to machinery: the captured strike cruiser's Machine Spirit could turn an ordinary person connecting to it into a fanatic of the Lord of Pleasure 30.
- That corruption is not irreversible. Rowan uses the Emperor's power to purify the ship and restore the sanity of captured Chaos Astartes 30 31 32.
Eldar Soul Predation
Slaanesh has consumed Eldar souls continuously since their fall 322.
- An unprotected Eldar soul entering the Warp is described as facing a “one-way ticket” to the Six Rings 175.
- Its connection to the Eldar informs its expectation of receiving the largest share of souls released by Ynnead's birth 323.
- Rowan's interference prevents the expected release of those souls and denies Slaanesh its anticipated feast 323.
Divine Combat and Warp Manipulation
Slaanesh attacks Rowan with beautiful but agonizing blades during the Four Gods' coordinated assault 264.
- It joins the other gods in surrounding Rowan with their domains and exerting combined divine pressure 263.
- After their direct attack fails to kill him, Slaanesh and Nurgle strike the Veil separating the Warp from realspace, intending to destroy his six thousand Gloriana-class ships 264.
- Direct intervention has constraints: even the Chaos Gods cannot immediately project sufficient power onto Macragge during Guilliman's awakening 145.
- Cegorach identifies the gods' individual wills—not their underlying concepts—as the potential targets of destruction 326.
Relationships
- Rowan / Luo An — Enemy whose destruction of Slaaneshi servants, direct assaults, and disruption of the Ynnead scheme repeatedly undermine Slaanesh 131 263 264 323.
- Miriael Sabathiel — Favored champion and Daemon Prince, abundantly blessed by Slaanesh; ultimately slaughtered by Rowan during his early campaign 21 131.
- Fulgrim — Slaaneshi Daemon Primarch of the Emperor's Children. His existence in the Six Rings is marked by dependency, pleasure-seeking, and boredom 248.
- Lucius the Eternal — Identified as Slaanesh's favored champion while accompanying Fulgrim 290.
- Tzeentch — Ally in joint schemes, but the target of Slaanesh's anger after the Crone Sword trap fails. Tzeentch celebrates the unforeseen change instead 323.
- Khorne and Nurgle — Fellow Chaos Gods who cooperate with Slaanesh against Rowan and contribute their powers to the corrupted Crone Sword 263 264 323.
- Ynnead — Eldar Death God intended to destroy Slaanesh. Slaanesh instead anticipates his birth as an opportunity for a feast and a wider catastrophe 322 323.
- Abaddon — Chosen of the Four Gods whose undertaking receives Slaanesh's support; Slaanesh chiefly values the sensations the conflict promises 119.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Slaaneshi Opposition
- Rowan's first battlefield encounter includes a Slaaneshi Chaos Space Marine who abandons his existing prey to pursue the pleasure of fighting a mortal 3.
- Malven summons Miriael through a ritual involving thirty-six psykers. Rowan subsequently destroys the Slaaneshi Daemon Prince and her associated warband 21 131.
- Slaanesh stirs within its central bedchamber after the early conflict 29.
Guilliman's Awakening
- Slaanesh notices the inexplicable loss of part of its power and looks through the Veil toward Macragge 145.
- The scene in the Hall of Truth provokes a howl of delight and greed, attracting the attention of the other three Chaos Gods. Their inability to project enough power immediately leaves them watching Rowan restore Guilliman 145.
Battle Against Rowan
- With the Chaos fleet facing destruction, all four gods manifest their realms around Rowan and attempt to corrupt or overpower him 263.
- Their coordinated attack injures Rowan, but he erases the wounds by denying the concept of injury. The gods then target his connection to the Emperor and his realspace fleet 264.
- Rowan retaliates against their domains. Belisarius Cawl confronts Slaanesh's realm while remaining unmoved by its temptations 264 265.
Failed Crone Sword Scheme
- The Four Gods corrupt a Crone Sword together: Tzeentch conceals the trap, Khorne contributes blood and brutality, Nurgle adds plague, and Slaanesh's delight fuses the corruption 323.
- The trap is designed to let Ynnead's resurrection succeed, then redirect its power into a catastrophic collision. The intended consequences include destroying the Webway near Terra, releasing daemons, destabilizing the Golden Throne, and potentially restarting the Emperor's transformation into the Dark King 323.
- Slaanesh also expects mass Eldar deaths to release a vast harvest of souls. Ynnead notices its eager anticipation rather than fear as his ascent begins to falter 322 323.
- Rowan disrupts the scheme at its foundation. Slaanesh loses the expected souls and its opportunity to destroy Rowan and breach Terra's defenses, responding with helpless fury 323.
