Background / History
Batman protects Gotham City as Bruce Wayne, a Wayne Enterprises industrialist who maintains a public identity as Gotham’s wealthy “golden boy.” He works with Alfred and Director Gordon while pursuing Gotham’s major criminals, particularly the Joker. 14 76
His position is destabilized when Bai Lang begins operating in a copied Batsuit. The impostor’s killings at the Red Rose Bar and against Bane’s gang are attributed to Batman, forcing Bruce to investigate an enemy whose physical abilities exceed Bane’s. 2 4 9 11
The Joker captures Bruce at Gotham Reservoir and publicly removes his cowl, exposing him as Batman. Bai Lang then arrives in a Batman costume, causing much of Gotham to identify Bai Lang—not Bruce—as the “real Batman.” 14
Bruce responds to Bai Lang’s growing threat through preparation and technology, creating the Anti-Batman Armor and repeatedly confronting him over the use of lethal force. Bai Lang defeats him in their fight over Scarecrow’s fear gas, prompting Bruce to further improve his armor. 24 35 36
Bruce remains committed to Gotham even as the city is abandoned during its plague and earthquake crisis. He travels to Washington to seek federal aid, then later helps establish White Dream City’s security force alongside Gordon. 76 84
His final documented confrontation with Bai Lang occurs at the Court of Owls’ base. Bruce uses a magical restraint and a plasma cannon, but Bai Lang survives, overpowers him, and cripples him. Bruce is later stated to have died; Alfred becomes Gotham’s new Batman. 133 156
Appearance
Batman wears a technologically advanced black armored suit and cowl while operating at night. His civilian identity is Bruce Wayne, described as having deep blue eyes and a resolute face when the Joker unmasks him. 14
- Black Batman armor and cowl. 2 14
- Advanced helmet systems, including night vision, thermal imaging, sonar detection, and voice modulation. 24
- Later armor incorporates gold-lined nanomaterials and N-series Metal. 24 45
Personality
Bruce is intensely protective of Gotham and regards its survival as a personal obligation inherited from his family. Even after the city is abandoned by America, he refuses to leave it behind and seeks aid in Washington. 76
He rejects Bai Lang’s lethal methods, believing Gotham needs reform rather than slaughter. This conviction puts him into repeated conflict with Bai Lang, who argues that Bruce’s nonlethal vigilantism leaves the roots of crime intact. 20 36 51
Bruce is methodical and cautious around superhuman threats. Rather than accepting Bai Lang’s power, he studies combat footage, develops countermeasures, and prepares contingency armor against both Bai Lang and Kryptonians. 11 17 100
