Background

Ji Tian first appears as a spiritual light struggling beneath immense pressure. After extending and strengthening his spiritual sense, he reaches a broken halberd whose remaining dragon-shaped blade carries a soul-stirring sharpness 27.

He awakens as a sentient Artifact Spirit born from the Heaven Devouring Halberd. A remnant soul within a black bone arm tells him that both are remnants of the same original existence: Ji Tian is the weapon’s awakened spirit, while the arm contains a wisp of the former owner’s soul 28. Ji Tian rejects the idea that he must inherit that being’s identity or suffering, declaring that he will determine his own fate 28.

The Black Bone Arm teaches him the Mysterious Ghost Yin Yang Art and expends its soul power to help break the first seal. Ji Tian enters a blood-red world beneath the Netherworld Blood Sea, beginning a dangerous path as a ghost cultivator outside the cycle of reincarnation 28.

A later account identifies Ji Tian as a residual soul from Great God Pangu’s weapon, referred to there as the Heaven Slaying Halberd, and states that Ji Tian ultimately vanished and was reborn as Tongtian 89.

Ji Tian is defined by his refusal to accept predestination. Although his initial awakening leaves him isolated, fearful, and uncertain of his identity, he repeatedly chooses resistance over passive survival—even when opposing the Heavenly Dao seems impossible 28.

His survival instincts are ruthless and practical. In the Withered Bone Mountain Range, he ambushes stronger undead, uses traps rather than direct confrontations, and considers moral restraint fatal in a world governed by predation 30. He is also capable of mercy: after defeating the Fire Phoenix, he offers it the choice to follow him or continue cultivating and shares his insights instead of destroying it 44.

His cultivation is closely tied to the state of his heart. Ji Tian confronts fear, resentment, and the temptation to slaughter indiscriminately; he accepts the Way of Slaughter as a means to uphold his convictions rather than an excuse to kill without purpose 39 41 49.
