Power Progression
The following records documented advances by Saiyan characters, rather than a single progression shared by the entire race.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-level warrior — Zhu Mang | 81 | Balanced Turtle Hermit Style training raises his battle power above 3,000, moving him beyond Planet Vegeta’s ordinary cannon-fodder category. |
| Base battle power: 1 million — Zhu Mang | 85 | Conventional growth slows, prompting him to investigate Great Ape power and alternative transformations. |
| Humanoid Great Ape — Zhu Mang | 87 | Compresses Great Ape energy into a human-sized body; initially permits only about 13 minutes of combat. |
| Primal Saiyan — Zhu Mang | 107 | Porunga strengthens his bloodline, raising his transformed battle power to 20 million and removing the former Humanoid Great Ape form’s severe burden. |
| Super Saiyan — Zhu Mang | 134 135 | Uses the Power Stone to stimulate his own energy rather than merely borrow its power. The transformation provides a fiftyfold increase, reaching 150 million. |
| Super Saiyan 1 Full Power — Zhu Mang | 156 | Confirmed to have mastered the low-burden state after previously identifying it as a route toward combining Super Saiyan and Primal power. |
| Battle power: approximately 500 — young Goku | 158 | Recovery from a near-death injury triggers a substantial increase, allowing him to overwhelm King Piccolo. |
| Battle power: 200,000 — young Goku | 159 | A Tree of Might fruit raises his power from 500 to 200,000. |
| Super Saiyan — Future Trunks | 184 | Already possessing roughly 3 million base battle power, he transforms after about a day of practicing ki concentration along his spine. |
| Super Saiyan 1 Full Power and Breakthrough Form — Future Gohan | 185 | Mental conditioning, gravity training, nutrition, healing, and Tree of Might supplementation produce a reported transformed battle power of 500 million. |
| Super Saiyan — Goku and Vegeta | 192 | Goku achieves the form at thirteen and Vegeta at eighteen, substantially earlier than their original counterparts. |
| Super Saiyan 1 Full Power — Broly | 192 | At thirteen, his base battle power exceeds 50 million and his transformed power reaches 2.5 billion. Mastery allows him to remain calm despite his Legendary bloodline. |
| Primal Super Saiyan 2 — Zhu Mang | 215 | Breakthrough raises his power from hundreds of billions into the trillions and greatly improves fine ki control. |
| World Master — Zhu Mang | 251 | Integration with the Swallowed Star cultivation system doubles his base battle power from 1 billion to 2 billion; Primal Super Saiyan 2 reaches roughly 10 trillion. |
| Super Saiyan 2 Full Power / Limit Break — Vegeta | 270 | Demonstrates an advanced state made possible by the stronger physical foundation established through Zhu Mang’s instruction; exceeding his limits still severely strains his injured body. |
| Rage Super Saiyan — Broly | 274 | Grief and the sight of wounded allies trigger a unique transformation that surpasses Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 and overwhelms Dark Cell. |
| Super Saiyan 3: Spirit Energy Enhancement Form — Vegeta | 294 295 | Returns from the temporal corridor with a distinct Super Saiyan 3 variation associated with the Spirit Bomb technique, which he calls “Ki Enhancement.” |
| Primal Super Saiyan 2 stacked with Super Saiyan Blue — Goku, Universe 19 | 340 | Zhu Mang introduces darkness, light, and divine power to awaken and stabilize Goku’s primal instincts, enabling him to defeat Dragon God-enhanced Piccolo. |
Background / History
Planetary Conquest and Early Education
Saiyan society classified children by battle power at birth and prepared them for conquest before they could understand their upbringing. Infant pods directly supplied combat knowledge, crude ki methods, racial history, and behavioral rules to their brains. Children dispatched to other planets therefore retained instructions about their identity and missions 3 33 288.
Target planets were assessed for danger before assignment. Low-class infants were sent to less threatening worlds, while stronger children could be assigned more dangerous targets. Successful conquerors returned by spherical spaceship and replenished the ranks of adult warriors 150 289.
Gebinz exemplifies this system. Born with approximately 50 battle power, he was sent to a remote, low-value planet, annihilated its inhabitants as a Great Ape, and returned to Planet Vegeta. He passed his adulthood assessment early and joined the Frieza Force’s planetary “real estate” operations 33.
Destruction and the Super Saiyan Legend
Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, leaving only a small number of Saiyans alive. His fear of the Super Saiyan legend also drives his later search for Zhu Mang after evidence suggests that an unusually powerful Saiyan killed Slug 109 150 151.
Bardock’s displacement into the past creates a circular connection with that fear: he encounters Frieza’s ancestor, becomes a Super Saiyan, and leaves behind the legend that eventually contributes to Frieza’s decision to destroy Planet Vegeta. The rescued Bardock is later described as having traveled a thousand years into the past 158 285.
Survivors and New Leadership
Zhu Mang rejects the race’s history of conquest and develops an alternative centered on martial education, emotional discipline, and protection. He places Goku and Broly under Son Gohan and Master Roshi, then extends that training to Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz 103 118 152 159.
Saiyan leadership remains strongly tied to personal strength. Bardock recognizes Zhu Mang as the rightful King of the Saiyans upon assessing his power, while Zhu Mang’s son identifies himself as the Saiyan Kingdom’s crown prince 225 285.
Survivors do not all retain a warrior lifestyle. Raditz settles into a peaceful life with Violet, while Nappa becomes West City Spaceport’s director. Goku balances family life with defensive duties, and Broly continues solitary training 268 269.
Appearance
Saiyans are humanlike in their ordinary forms, but the Planet Vegeta population includes tail-bearing individuals whose transformations can drastically alter their size and features 33 293.
- Tails: Often wrapped around the waist; their presence helps identify the Saiyan trio in the alternate Earth-Vegeta timeline 293.
- Great Ape form: A gigantic, destructive ape transformation associated with full-moon exposure 33 35.
- Super Saiyan appearance: Zhu Mang’s first transformation produces golden hair and ki, emerald-green eyes, and surrounding lightning 134.
- Super Saiyan 4 appearance: Described with red fur over much of the body, altered eyebrows, and changed eye coloration 87.
- Universe 6 distinction: Planet Sadala’s Saiyans are born without tails 343.
Biology and Growth
Warrior Classification
| Classification | Documented criterion or example |
|---|---|
| Low-class warrior | One birth criterion is battle power below 100. Gebinz’s approximately 50 qualifies him for this category 3 33. |
| Ordinary adult grunt | Warriors with battle power above 1,000 are still described as common, expendable troops on Planet Vegeta 150. |
| Mid-level warrior | Zhu Mang’s battle power above 3,000 qualifies him for this status; Paragus is also identified as a mid-level warrior 81 116. |
| Upper-class / elite warrior | Alternate-timeline Vegeta is born with battle power of 2,000 and treated as an exceptional prodigy 289 294. |
| Exceptional bloodline | Broly’s recalled birth battle power is 10,000, far above ordinary Saiyan standards 107. |
Birth classification does not guarantee eventual superiority. The alternate Kakarot rises from a birth battle power of 2 to 70,000 through survival battles and recovery boosts, surpassing Earth-raised Vegeta’s 50,000 293 294.
S-Cells and Mental State
- Peaceful conditions support growth: Zhu Mang initially connects a calm mind with S-Cell accumulation, increased potential, and improving training efficiency 81.
- Trauma can hinder development: He later attributes Future Gohan and Trunks’s comparatively poor growth to insufficient S-Cells under constant crisis and suffering 184.
- Training includes mental recovery: Meditation and conditioning stabilize the future hybrids’ violent ki before transformation practice 184.
- Potential is not universally limitless: The Grand Elder finds that Gebinz’s low-class body has largely exhausted its available potential, prompting Zhu Mang to request bloodline enhancement 107.
Maturation and Hybrids
- Adulthood brings accelerated growth: Saiyans can undergo sharp increases in height and battle power; theoretically, their previous power may even double during this period 294.
- Hybrid talent can exceed pureblood talent: Earthling–Saiyan offspring are described as often possessing greater bloodline potential than pureblood Saiyans 232.
- Environment still matters: Zhu Mang’s son develops much more slowly under the One Piece world’s limitations, leading Zhu Mang to recognize that bloodline alone does not explain his own exceptional growth 238 241.
- High birth rates do not ensure population growth: The race’s belligerence and extreme mortality keep its population from increasing 100.
Abilities & Skills
Innate Physique and Ki
- Powerful bodies: A Saiyan’s natural physique lets Zhu Mang practice Six Powers techniques without the lengthy physical preparation ordinary people require 18.
- Basic energy offense: Traditional instruction teaches Saiyans to guide ki outside the body and fire energy blasts 18.
- Ki defense: Coating the body in ki produces the defensive “Ki Burst” state 18.
- Limited traditional refinement: Native instruction emphasizes force rather than conservation, concealment, or sophisticated control. Scouters can consequently read ordinary warriors’ relatively exposed battle power 3 18.
- Spiritual development: Saiyans generally do not specialize in spiritual cultivation; their spiritual power tends to grow passively alongside ki 241.
Recovery from Near Death
- Potential release: Recovering from the brink of death can unlock hidden potential and drastically increase battle power 16.
- Observed application: Young Goku’s recovery raises him to approximately 500 battle power; repeated survival boosts help alternate Kakarot reach 70,000 158 294.
- Important distinction: The increase follows recovery, not injury alone 16.
Great Ape Transformation
- Trigger: Full-moon exposure activates latent violent factors in Saiyan blood 35.
- Amplification: Battle power increases tenfold 80.
- Artificial activation: Zhu Mang seeks an artificial moon emitting seventeen million Blutz Waves; elite warrior Nappa can create an artificial moon 80 294.
- Loss of reason: Ordinary Saiyans may become indiscriminately destructive. Exceptionally talented elites and royal-blooded Saiyans can retain control 35.
- Hybrid exception: Earthling–Saiyan offspring may preserve some reason; Son Gohan is given as an example 35.
Super Saiyan Transformations
| Form | Documented properties |
|---|---|
| Super Saiyan 1 | Normally described as a fiftyfold base-power increase. Zhu Mang treats roughly 3 million base battle power as the threshold for learning it 135 152 184. |
| Super Saiyan Ultra form | Enlarged muscles increase raw power but sharply reduce speed, making it a flawed combat state 145. |
| Super Saiyan 1 Full Power | Normalizes the transformation, minimizes bodily burden, and removes its associated excitement 135 184 192. |
| Super Saiyan 2 | Described as twice Super Saiyan 1, or one hundred times base power 135. |
| Super Saiyan 3 | Described as four times Super Saiyan 2, or four hundred times base power; energy leakage makes sustained use difficult 135 184. |
| Super Saiyan 4 | Later interpreted by Zhu Mang as the release of the Saiyan bloodline’s primal form. Associated with attack-energy absorption and resistance to extreme temperatures and high-voltage currents 191 192. |
| Super Saiyan God | A higher life-form evolution associated with godly ki. Zhu Mang investigates a ritual gathering the power of five righteous Saiyans into another Saiyan 191 241. |
| Super Saiyan Blue | Demonstrated by alternate Goku and later combined with Goku’s Primal Super Saiyan 2 power 335 340. |
- Alternative awakening: Future Trunks learns to transform by concentrating ki along his spine rather than relying on anger alone 184.
- Physical limits remain relevant: Reaching the energy threshold does not guarantee a body capable of sustaining transformation; Trunks requires further gravity conditioning 185.
- An interpretation is revised: Zhu Mang initially calculates Super Saiyan 4 as a tenfold amplification of Super Saiyan 3, but later rejects that explanation in favor of progressive bloodline unlocking 135 191.
Primal Saiyan Path
- Humanoid Great Ape: Compresses Great Ape energy into human proportions but initially imposes heavy strain 87.
- Bloodline enhancement: Porunga’s wish strengthens Zhu Mang’s physique, defense, offense, speed, and recovery while making the compressed form sustainable 107.
- Transformation stacking: Zhu Mang proposes combining the Primal form’s tenfold increase with Super Saiyan 1’s fiftyfold increase for a five-hundredfold amplification 135.
- Initial obstacle: Insufficient bodily adaptation and Super Saiyan proficiency prevent the forms from coexisting safely 135.
- Primal Super Saiyan 2: Eventually grants Zhu Mang much finer ki manipulation, including the ability to use enormous energy without damaging Earth against his wishes 215.
Legendary and Demon Saiyan Power
- Exceptional potential: Broly’s Legendary bloodline produces growth far beyond ordinary Saiyans, including continued increases during his battle with Frieza 154 192.
- Control problems: Transformation can unleash overwhelming excitement, violence, and destructive instincts 107 192.
- Mental training works: Broly’s meditation and Full Power mastery allow him to regulate the bloodline rather than remain a mindless berserker 117 192 319.
- Protective rage: His Rage Super Saiyan transformation is triggered by grief and injured allies, then directed against Dark Cell 274.
- Other manifestations: Universe 16’s Son Bra enters a Legendary Super Saiyan Rampage state that requires Zhu Mang’s intervention 335 336.
- Demon Saiyan terminology: Universe 6 preserves a Demon Saiyan legend associated with Kale 295.
Training and Equipment
- Gravity training: A major shortcut for strengthening Saiyan bodies and increasing ki; Planet Vegeta’s gravity is ten times Earth’s 2 136 185.
- Weighted vest: Vegapunk supplies Zhu Mang with a training vest that imitates the Kilo-Kilo Fruit’s effects 81.
- Gravity Ring: Dr. Brief creates a personal-gravity device potentially reaching one thousand times normal gravity without affecting the surroundings; it can improve through ki nourishment 118.
- Turtle Hermit Style: Combines physical training, study, play, and rest. Its philosophy benefits Raditz more readily than Vegeta or Nappa 81 159.
- Scouters: Measure battle power and include translation devices for numerous extraterrestrial languages 18 33.
- Infant pods and spherical ships: Deliver early education and transport children to conquest targets 33 117.
- Tree of Might fruit: Provides major energy boosts, but its evil intent makes a solid mental foundation important 159.
- Dragon Balls: Can enhance a Saiyan bloodline, as Porunga does for Zhu Mang; this is an external intervention rather than ordinary racial development 107.
Culture and Temperament
Saiyans instinctively admire strength in both power and personality. Their traditional aesthetic equates strength with beauty and weakness with ugliness, but attraction to strength does not mean unconditional obedience to every stronger individual 24.
Their reputation for violence reflects both bloodline impulses and indoctrination. Ordinary latent aggression usually produces combativeness or irritability; nursery education reinforces conquest and brutality. Zhu Mang’s crisis emerges when Gebinz’s murderous memories interact with those impulses 33 35.
Upbringing can produce sharply different personalities. Son Gohan’s instruction prevents alternate Earth-raised Vegeta from treating conquest as his duty, while the Kakarot raised among native Saiyans becomes a ruthless survivor. Universe 6’s peaceful Saiyans provide a broader contrast to Planet Vegeta’s culture 289 294 343.
Universe and Timeline Variants
| Population or setting | Distinguishing features |
|---|---|
| Planet Vegeta / Universe 7 | Conquest-oriented society devastated by Frieza; its survivors include warriors who later protect Earth and other worlds 33 109 295. |
| Universe 6 / Planet Sadala | Tail-less Saiyans employed to fight evildoers and maintain peace. Their society develops agriculture and culinary culture, with better living conditions and mental well-being than the Saiyans Zhu Mang usually encounters 343. |
| Earth-Vegeta trial timeline | Vegeta is raised by Son Gohan, while Kakarot remains within Saiyan society. Their contrasting development illustrates the effects of upbringing, pressure, and recovery boosts 288 293 294. |
| Tournament Universe 19 | Zhu Mang’s associated fighters display unusually advanced training and transformations compared with many visiting counterparts 319 321 340. |
| Tournament Universe 16 | Goku and Vegeta exist as the fused warrior Vegito; his daughter Son Bra manifests unstable Legendary Super Saiyan power 322 335 336. |
| Tournament Universe 20 | An alternate Broly is recovered frozen and subsequently unleashes a destructive Legendary Super Saiyan rampage 322 328. |

Cross-World Adaptation
- Destructive power is not life level: Zhu Mang compares an adult Saiyan’s Great Ape power with an Immortal’s destructive capacity in Swallowed Star, while explicitly noting that Saiyans remain inferior in life level and other qualities 250 251.
- World laws affect bloodline expression: His son’s limited growth in One Piece demonstrates that inheriting Saiyan biology does not automatically reproduce Dragon Ball’s growth conditions 238 241.
- Zhu Mang is an exception: His system lets him combine Saiyan biology with Haki, magic, Namekian techniques, Ultraman light, and Swallowed Star cultivation outside any single world’s restrictions 241.
- Regeneration is not established as an innate Saiyan ability: Zhu Mang studies Namekian regeneration to overcome the limits of his existing healing techniques 100.
- Saiyan Ultraman is a composite form: Videl uses Zhu Mang’s transformation device to combine Saiyan energy with cosmic light; this is not presented as an ordinary Saiyan racial transformation 277.
