Background / History

Gohan's teacher and the Saiyan invasion

Piccolo trained Gohan for a year, recognizing the immense power hidden within him and intending to use it against the invading Saiyans. His instruction also helped the formerly timid child become more mature and responsible 5 8 14.

During this period, Piccolo destroyed Earth's Moon to prevent Gohan from becoming a Great Ape. He later died protecting Gohan from Nappa; Kami and Earth's Dragon Balls were lost with him. Reviving Piccolo became one of Gohan's reasons for joining the Namek mission 1 3 8 191.

Return to Namek

Piccolo is alive again when Gohan transports the Z Warriors to Namek to confront King Cold. Seeing his homeland and people gives him a powerful sense of familiarity and belonging after living apart from other Namekians on Earth 42.

With his potential unlocked by Gohan, he fights King Cold's soldiers alongside Earth's warriors and Nail. Despite their superior individual strength, the defenders suffer injuries against the army's numbers; Gohan heals them and restores their depleted power afterward 43.

Fusion with Kami and the Android conflict

The Android crisis leaves Piccolo dejected about his weakness. Gohan explains that Piccolo and Kami are incomplete while separated, and that reunion will greatly improve both his Battle Power and training efficiency 75.

Kami agrees to merge with him for Earth's protection, acknowledging that Piccolo has changed. Their fusion succeeds at Kami's Lookout, while Gohan proposes Dende as Earth's next guardian 76.

Piccolo subsequently tests his strength against Perfect Cell. Their clash causes extensive destruction, but Piccolo later struggles while being pursued by Cell's Cutting Discs 84 86.

Training and Earth's defense
