Background / History

Whitebeard was formerly one of the pillars of the Rocks Pirates. After that crew collapsed, he fought the Marines, Gol D. Roger, Golden Lion, Kaido, and other great pirates through the violent struggle for control of the New World. His title as the World’s Strongest Man was forged through those battles. 140

He became the first Pirate Emperor and established the Whitebeard Pirates. Unlike pirates seeking the title of Pirate King, Whitebeard’s defining ambition was to build a family; he considers his crew his sons and treats the crew itself as that fulfilled dream. 1 51

Personality

Whitebeard is direct, boisterous, and deeply paternal toward his crew. He calls his subordinates his sons, welcomes Jinbe back despite the latter’s guilt, and grieves Thatch’s death as the loss of family rather than merely a commander. 51 72 193
