Background / History
Whitebeard was formerly one of the pillars of the Rocks Pirates. After that crew collapsed, he fought the Marines, Gol D. Roger, Golden Lion, Kaido, and other great pirates through the violent struggle for control of the New World. His title as the World’s Strongest Man was forged through those battles. 140
He became the first Pirate Emperor and established the Whitebeard Pirates. Unlike pirates seeking the title of Pirate King, Whitebeard’s defining ambition was to build a family; he considers his crew his sons and treats the crew itself as that fulfilled dream. 1 51
His flag protected multiple territories, including the Ekmondo Kingdom and Fish-Man Island. The protection deterred other emperors and pirates, though Whitebeard’s crew continued collecting protection fees from its territories. 1 19 53
By the present era, Whitebeard’s health has declined severely. Marco searches dangerous waters for rare medicinal ingredients, while Whitebeard resists calls to stop drinking despite his condition. 11 51 53
Appearance
Whitebeard is an elderly man distinguished by a crescent-shaped white mustache. He is typically seated in a large chair aboard the Moby Dick, often drinking from an enormous sake cup. 50 136 167
- Crescent-shaped white mustache. 104 136
- Carries the naginata Murakumogiri. 193
- Commands from the Moby Dick, a ship with a white-whale figurehead. 72 167
Personality
Whitebeard is direct, boisterous, and deeply paternal toward his crew. He calls his subordinates his sons, welcomes Jinbe back despite the latter’s guilt, and grieves Thatch’s death as the loss of family rather than merely a commander. 51 72 193
He has little interest in conventional pirate glory. His priority is the safety and cohesion of his family, and his territories are notably forbidden from supporting slavery or drug trafficking. He also forbids his pirates from kidnapping civilians. 51 53 172
Age and illness have made him more calculating than in his youth. Although he wants to pursue Teach personally after Thatch’s murder, he recognizes that leaving the New World would endanger the many people affected by his movements. 193
Abilities & Skills
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Whitebeard possesses the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, regarded as a terrifying power among the Four Emperors. His destructive potential is feared to the extent that he has vowed to shatter the Red Line, a threat the World Government does not dismiss. 74 144
- His power helped establish his reputation as the World’s Strongest Man. 140
- The World Government avoids provoking him without a reliable method to restrain his destructive capability. 144
- His declining health limits how recklessly he can deploy his strength. 193
Conqueror’s Haki
Whitebeard possesses Conqueror’s Haki refined to a level that can affect physical matter. When Aleus boarded the Moby Dick, Whitebeard’s pressure struck with enough force to physically overwhelm him. 50
- His Conqueror’s Haki was described as superior to Big Mom’s in sheer force. 50
- The pressure was sufficiently overwhelming that all sixteen division commanders guarded Whitebeard while Aleus approached. 50
Combat Prowess
Whitebeard’s standing was built through battles against the greatest figures of the previous era, including Roger, Golden Lion, Kaido, and the Marines. Even Fleet Admiral Kong remembers the pain from one of Whitebeard’s past slashes. 140 194
- Uses Murakumogiri in combat. 193
- Tested Aleus with a sudden attack during their Water 7 confrontation; their single exchange split clouds, churned the sea, and damaged nearby ships. 172 173
- His aging body and illness have reduced his ability to sustain reckless campaigns. 1 193
