Background

The Hogyoku was embedded in Aleus's chest from birth and remained dormant throughout his early life. During those years, it silently absorbed the souls of enemies he killed in real combat. At sixteen, he consumed the Bat-Bat Fruit from the Ekmondo royal treasury; the collision between the fruit and the Hogyoku awakened the gem, transforming the ordinary Zoan into the Black Winged Great Demon Form. 2

As the first crown prince of the Ekmondo Kingdom, Aleus received elite combat-focused training. He viewed the war against the Amento Kingdom as both his public debut and a source of souls for the Hogyoku. 2 3 His victory and the annihilation of more than twenty thousand enemy soldiers earned him the epithet “Black Prince.” 18

After defeating Umit and absorbing his shipping network, Aleus began expanding Ekmondo influence across the New World. 18 78 He sought and received recognition as a Shichibukai after defeating a CP0 agent in Mary Geoise, accepting the Five Elders' condition that he investigate the Revolutionary Army. 63 64

Aleus later established research operations on Skadi Island, pursuing Artificial Devil Fruits, artificial humans, Devil Fruit weapons, giant dragons, poison gas, and Sea Monster Warriors. 94 175 His long-term aim is to overthrow the World Government and replace the Celestial Dragons, an ambition for which he recruited Zephyr's support. 143 144

Appearance

Aleus is a handsome, emerald-eyed man with a muscular build, including prominent pectorals and defined abdominal muscles. A blue-black Hogyoku is embedded at the center of his chest. 2

Personality

Aleus is confident, calculating, and exceptionally ambitious. He assesses political shifts, military strength, intelligence, and unusual abilities as resources to be acquired or exploited. His plans range from dismantling Umit's shipping empire to establishing scientific facilities and building a force capable of challenging the World Government. 18 78 94

He can be patient when research or strategy demands it, but he is also ruthless toward enemies, spies, and unwilling research subjects. 175 192 212 Issho describes him as a contradictory figure: “cold, warm, cruel, kind, mad, rational.” 62

Despite his reputation, Aleus cares about Ekmondo's prosperity and does not wish to become like the Celestial Dragons. His reputation within Ekmondo is considerably better than his fearsome standing abroad. 108 He also shows a more playful side around his younger siblings and takes personal interest in the development of promising subordinates such as Iska. 20 73

The Hogyoku is the source of Aleus's extraordinary evolution. It feeds on souls, responds to his wishes, and enabled the mutation of his original Devil Fruit. 2
