Background / History

Jieyin lived at Mount Sumeru in the impoverished West alongside his junior brother Zhunti. Following Devil Ancestor Rahula's destruction of the Western Ancestral Vein, he carried deep sorrow for the devastation of the land and its surviving beings. He regarded restoring the West as both a grave responsibility and a path toward merit and progress 5.

He and Zhunti were drawn to the aura of Xuande's former true form, expecting to find a fated spiritual treasure. Instead, they encountered Xuande after his Form Transformation. Jieyin quickly regained his composure, apologized for the misunderstanding, and cautiously sought to understand the newly born cultivator's origins 2.

After discussing the Dao beneath the Bodhi Tree, Jieyin recognized the potential of Xuande's Dao of Purity and Merit. He invited Xuande to remain in the West as an equal partner in repairing its Earth Veins, rather than as a disciple 5. Jieyin then helped organize the restoration effort, proposed inviting Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun for their respective expertise, and personally undertook the broad, patient work of sorting Earth Veins and clearing minor blockages with Zhunti 7 12.

The restoration succeeded after a prolonged joint effort, earning merit for the five cultivators and raising Jieyin to the late stage of Grand Unity Golden Immortal 19 20. He later traveled with Xuande, Zhunti, Zhenyuanzi, and Hongyun to Purple Cloud Palace, arriving early enough to secure one of the six front cushions 32 34.

Hongjun later accepted Jieyin and Zhunti as registered disciples in acknowledgment of a karmic debt owed to the West. Jieyin received the Twelve-Petal World-Purifying White Lotus, though he later gave it to Xuande because of its shared origin with Xuande's Merit Golden Lotus 50 58.

With treasures contributed by Xuande and Zhunti, Jieyin assembled three Innate Five Directions Banners of the same origin. He used the Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner to sever his Good Corpse and enter the Quasi-Saint realm 58 62. His later exploration of the Three Immortal Islands and comprehension of the Three Talents provided the foundation for severing his Evil Corpse and reaching mid-stage Quasi-Saint 98 104.

As the West recovered, Jieyin established an austere cultivation ground on Penglai Island and began accepting disciples. He first took Yuan Hong, then later accepted Medicine Master and Great Strength during the West's broader recruitment effort 108 121 139 140. Alongside Xuande and Zhunti, he helped create an accessible cultivation method, organize Western trade, develop divine powers, and protect the newly created Human Race 135 144 153 154 168.

Following Laozi's attainment of the Dao, the three resolved to establish an independent Western Sect. They settled their Mystic Gate obligations through karmic sariras and golden bodies rather than simply denying their origins. Jieyin became the Present Buddha and presiding leader of the new sect 199 201. The resulting merit brought him to Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal, while his Primordial Violet Qi entered his golden body, preserving access to Heavenly Dao authority without binding his true body to it 202.

Jieyin is a gaunt Daoist with a sorrowful face and an enduring, compassionate aura. He wears a worn pale-yellow Daoist robe, and his expression often suggests that he bears the suffering of living beings 2.

Jieyin is calm, gentle, and deeply compassionate. The suffering of the West weighs visibly upon him, yet his sorrow does not render him passive; Xuande's influence inspires him to envision not only transcendence from suffering, but actively building and restoring what was lost 5 6.

He is patient and considerate in his dealings with others. Although he and Zhunti had recognized Xuande's true origins early on, Jieyin kept that knowledge private to avoid putting Xuande in an uncomfortable position 27. He consistently treats Xuande as a brother and rejects formal gratitude between them 101.

His outlook becomes notably more hopeful as the West recovers. At the Innate Gourd Vine, he willingly relinquishes potential treasures to Hongyun and Fuxi because they need them to sever their corpses, declaring that the West can now see hope 69.

He approaches important decisions deliberately. He initially opposes opening the West's gates to widespread recruitment before its foundations are ready, but later supports recruitment as conditions improve 123 134. When considering Northern Mystery's transformation, he remains silent for a long time before speaking, reflecting his habit of weighing serious matters carefully 211.

His composure is supported by exceptional resolve: he endures the painful extraction of Mystic Gate karma without changing expression 201. He can also acknowledge defeat without resentment, accepting Laozi's victory and earnestly considering his advice on developing rebirth after nirvana 225 226.

Jieyin interprets the Western Sect's compassion as an obligation to act, not merely a slogan. He argues that abandoning endangered allies in the name of neutrality would empty “deliverance of all beings” of meaning and undermine the commitments central to Xuande's Dao of Merit 235.

Jieyin and Zhunti investigate the emergence of the Merit Golden Lotus's aura, only to find Xuande. Initial caution develops into mutual respect through their discussion of the Dao, after which Jieyin invites Xuande to help revive the West 2 3 5.

Restoration of the Western Earth Veins

Jieyin helps recruit Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun, learns Earth Vein restoration techniques, and performs long-term sorting and stabilization work with Zhunti. The completed project restores the West's foundation and earns him a breakthrough 7 12 13 19 20.

Purple Cloud Palace

Jieyin joins Xuande's group on an early journey through Chaos to Purple Cloud Palace. He receives a front cushion, becomes one of Hongjun's registered disciples, and gains major treasures intended to support the West's revival 32 34 50 51.

After returning with the treasures from Purple Cloud Palace and Treasure Distribution Cliff, he exchanges resources with his brothers. Xuande gives him the Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner and Zhunti contributes the Northern Profound Water Control Banner, completing a trio of same-origin treasures. Jieyin subsequently severs his Good Corpse with the central banner 58 62.

Three Immortal Islands

Jieyin proposes that the elusive Three Immortal Islands may move rather than remain fixed in the East Sea. He later joins Xuande and Zhunti in breaking the Innate Three Talents Grand Formation through complete unity of mind 91 98.

During the search, he takes responsibility for the South Sea while Xuande searches the North Sea and Zhunti the West Sea 91. On the islands, he recognizes Bitter Bamboo as an especially suitable aid for quieting stray thoughts and comprehending nirvana, then carefully extracts it 99 100. He and Zhunti protect Xuande during refinement of the Creation Cauldron and help him collect all three islands; Ancestral Dragon later praises the bond that enabled their success 101.

Quasi-Saint Advancement and Western Development

After comprehending the Three Talents, Jieyin severs his Evil Corpse and reaches mid-stage Quasi-Saint. He helps establish the Three Immortal Islands around Mount Sumeru, strengthens the West's spiritual environment, and begins mentoring the next generation through Yuan Hong 104 106 121.

On Penglai Island, he builds a deliberately austere cave abode beneath the Five-Needle Pine, consisting of a meditation chamber, a cushion, and a wall inscribed with his understanding of quiescence and purity. He surrounds it with restrictions to prevent disturbance 108. After accepting Yuan Hong, he supplies Innate Goldstone for the disciples' weapons and shares Five-Needle Pine nuts with the younger generation 121 122.

Western Wondrous Dharma and Recruitment

Although initially reluctant to recruit widely before the West is ready, Jieyin later agrees that its growing foundations require more talent and stronger fortune 123 134. He helps Xuande and Zhunti devise Seven Emotions and Six Desires Severance, a path to Quasi-Sainthood that does not require Innate Spiritual Treasures 135.

The three publicly announce the method and welcome both great powers and independent cultivators to Mount Sumeru 135 137. During the resulting recruitment, Jieyin accepts Medicine Master and Great Strength, assigns them suitable homes on Penglai Island, and teaches them his Nirvana Purity Dao 139 140.

Trade, Standards, and Divine Powers

Jieyin supports the expansion of Western Treasury Coins, including the use of rare spiritual-root produce to support redemption. As trade flourishes, he, Xuande, and Zhunti receive Heavenly Dao merit for the Trade Dao 144. He also joins their effort to simplify Dao Script and later catalogs Penglai Island's pills and cultivation techniques, setting exchange prices so disciples can obtain suitable resources 144 146.

The three subsequently devise and master the Six Divine Powers, then instruct their disciples in them. Jieyin emphasizes that practical application will be necessary for genuine mastery 153 154.

Protection of the Human Race

Following the Human Race's creation, Jieyin joins Xuande and Zhunti in arranging its settlement at the foot of Mount Sumeru. Their disciples help build dwellings and teach basic survival skills 168. Before attending Nuwa's sermon at Wa Huang Palace, the three ensure that disciples remain in the West to look after the humans 170.

Jieyin later attends the Human Race's ceremony at Shouyang Mountain with Zhunti, conveying Xuande's regards. After the Kongtong Seal chooses the Three Ancestors and Nuwa urges the humans to govern their own fortune, he offers support before departing 241.

Establishment of the Western Sect and Hunyuan Attainment

After Laozi attains the Dao, Jieyin, Zhunti, and Xuande agree that the West should establish its own sect 199. They extract their Mystic Gate karma into sariras, create three distinct golden bodies, and place them in Brahma Sound Cave as enduring witnesses to their origins 201.

At Mount Sumeru's summit, the three use the Creation Cauldron to anchor the Western Sect's fortune and proclaim its establishment to the Great Dao. Jieyin names himself Present Buddha and takes responsibility for presiding over its affairs 201.

The descending merit enables his Three Corpses to unite and brings him to Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal. Rather than becoming a Heavenly Dao Sage, he follows an independent Hunyuan path. His Primordial Violet Qi transfers into the golden body, allowing the manifestation to serve as a connection to Heavenly Dao authority while leaving his true body free of its constraints 202.

Northern Mystery's Transformation

Jieyin helps Xuande and Zhunti address Northern Mystery's three interlocking karmic burdens. Instead of severing them, they spend three thousand years developing a transformation that combines karmic adjustment with Western Sect providence 211.

Their combined powers allow Northern Mystery to assume human form as the Western Sect's guardian divine beast. After Xuande dismantles the subsequent lightning tribulations, Northern Mystery thanks the three and prepares to revisit the North Sea 211.

Contest for the Creation Azure Lotus

When Xuande discovers the Twenty-Four-Petal Creation Green Lotus at Buzhou Mountain, Jieyin and Zhunti promptly come to support him 219. The dispute with the Three Pure Ones leads to three duels in Chaos, with Jieyin facing Laozi 221 223.

Jieyin deploys the three Innate Five Directions Banners, the Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud, and offensive nirvana lotus manifestations. His defenses impress Houtu and initially hold Laozi at bay, while his attacks are countered by the Taiji Diagram's power to harmonize Yin and Yang 223.

Laozi ultimately infiltrates the defensive system through successive transformations of Yin-Yang, the Four Symbols, Bagua, and all things. Jieyin concedes, and Laozi's advice about “rebirth after nirvana” gives him a new direction for contemplation 225.

After Xuande and Zhunti win their respective duels, the lotus is awarded to the Western Sect. Jieyin helps dismantle its remaining restriction by suppressing fragments of Pangu's Force Law with Nirvana Buddha Light 226.

Deliverance and Responsibility to Allies

After Xuande intervenes to protect the Witch Clan, Jieyin explains that the action is consistent with both Xuande's Dao of Merit and the Western Sect's founding purpose. He rejects a version of neutrality that would allow allies to perish, arguing that deliverance must include helping those connected to the sect when they face danger 235.
