Background

Xuande began as the true spirit of the Twelve-Petal Merit Golden Lotus, awakening alone in the West. Fearing that Jieyin and Zhunti might regard him as a spiritual treasure rather than a person, he cultivated until achieving Form Transformation. The Great Dao then bestowed the Dao Marks of his name, recognizing him as an Innate Divine Being. 1

He is also a transmigrator from a later age, retaining knowledge of the legends of the Primordial Wilderness. These memories help him anticipate opportunities and dangers, but his emotional attachment to having once been human initially prevents him from fully belonging to his new world. Severing that attachment does not erase his memories, which have already become part of his Primordial Spirit. 22 36 60

After meeting Jieyin and Zhunti, Xuande revealed only that he was an Innate Golden Lotus, concealing his Twelve-Petal origin. He accepted their invitation to Mount Sumeru as a guest because his higher cultivation and extraordinary origin allowed him to preserve his independence while learning about the Western path. 2 3

His Dao discussions with the pair led him to formally join them in reviving the barren West. He later joined Jieyin, Zhunti, Zhenyuanzi, and Hongyun in surveying and repairing the damaged Western Earth Veins. 6 7 10

While purifying the Abyss of Demonic Energy, Xuande uncovered Rahula's legacy: the Twelve-Petal Destruction Black Lotus and the God-Slaying Spear. He eventually refined both treasures, the latter recognizing him through their shared origin in the Chaos Green Lotus. 14 15 16 17 27 28 29

His original lotus body is one of the five lotus seeds scattered after the Chaos Green Lotus shattered. This shared origin becomes the basis of his long-term ambition to recover its legacy and evolve his own foundation beyond the limits of a twelve-petal lotus. 101

Appearance

Xuande usually appears as a handsome, gentle Daoist in plain white robes, surrounded by a faint golden halo. His clear yet profound eyes and calm aura leave a strong impression even on the despairing Six-eared Macaque. 40

Personality

Xuande is cautious, restrained, and highly strategic. He conceals crucial details of his origin when first meeting Jieyin and Zhunti, evaluates the risks and benefits of their offer, and joins them only under terms that preserve his initiative. 3

He combines this pragmatism with genuine compassion. He helps repair the West, aids Nuwa in claiming the sixth cushion at Purple Cloud Palace, protects Hongyun after the latter receives Primordial Violet Qi, and accepts Wuzhen despite the Dao Ancestor's prohibition. 20 34 39 55

His cultivation style reflects exceptional patience. He repeatedly works through difficult restrictions during the refinement of the Creation Cauldron, refusing to rush even when a single rune requires months of contemplation. 100

Xuande recognizes limits to his own selflessness. While considering Houtu's destined sacrifice, he admits that his practice of merit has depended upon preserving his own safety and that he could not readily sacrifice himself as she would. This awareness strengthens his admiration for her compassion. 114

His approach increasingly emphasizes acceptance and transformation rather than simple rejection: he settles his Mystic Gate karma, allows his Obsession Corpse an independent human life, and seeks his breakthrough in Chaos rather than directly contesting the Heavenly Dao's suppression. 201 203

Nevertheless, caution does not override his loyalties. He knowingly confronts Hongjun to protect the Witch Clan, accepting Heavenly Dao karma rather than abandoning his promise to Houtu. His allies and rivals recognize that his resolve is as significant as his cultivation. 234 235

He leads his companions through Chaos to Purple Cloud Palace well before Hongjun's lecture begins. During the seating dispute, he uses Merit Golden Light to help Nuwa obtain the sixth cushion. 32 33 34

Master of Wuzhen

Xuande chooses to shelter the rejected Six-eared Macaque, naming him Wuzhen and accepting him as a disciple. He later creates a cultivation method designed for Wuzhen, bestows the As-You-Will Iron Rod Soldier, and forges the Great Sage-style suit of armor. 39 40 72

During the gathering associated with Fuxi's Deduction Dao discourse, Xuande watches Wuzhen face Duobao. Remembering the Six-eared Macaque's original fate in a world without his intervention, he takes quiet satisfaction in seeing his disciple stand confidently as a Daluo Golden Immortal with his own Dao, companions, and future. 156 159

Severing the Three Corpses Path

Xuande chooses to sever his Obsession Corpse before his Good or Evil Corpses, recognizing that his attachment to his former mortal identity prevents him from fully integrating into the Primordial Wilderness. 59 60 61

After reaching Buzhou Mountain's summit and witnessing Pangu's creation of heaven and earth, Xuande severs his Good Corpse with the World-Purifying White Lotus and advances to mid-stage Quasi-Saint. 79 80

He initially plans to let his Obsession Corpse reincarnate once humanity and the cycle of reincarnation exist. Before entering Chaos, he fulfills this arrangement with Houtu's help, accepting that the reincarnated human will be an independent person whose choices he cannot control. 61 203

Establishing Western Foundations

Xuande acquires the Four Symbols Banana Tree, plants it on Mount Sumeru's main Earth Vein, and works with his allies to improve the West's Spiritual Energy. 82 83 84

He later obtains the Creation Cauldron and Primordial Heaven-Measuring Ruler, then uses the cauldron—with Jieyin and Zhunti's aid—to collect Penglai, Fangzhang, and Yingzhou, bringing the Three Immortal Islands and their resources under the West's protection. 99 100 101

He establishes his own cultivation ground on Yingzhou Island beneath the Yellow Center Plum tree. His early attempts to fuse branches from the Enlightenment Tea Tree, Five-Needle Pine, and Bitter Bamboo fail because their powerful Origin Essences repel one another, prompting further consultation with Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun. 108

Aid to Houtu and the Witch Clan

At Houtu's request for a path toward Primordial Spirits, Xuande uses the Creation Cauldron to examine her blood essence and identifies the turbid qi and baleful qi bound to her origin. He continues seeking a solution alongside Nuwa and Fuxi, eventually helping Houtu establish a Primordial Spirit. 114 116 118

The Ancestral Witches recognize the significance of his aid, apologize for their earlier hostility, and offer gifts of thanks. His connection with the clan later extends to helping Houtu develop Witch Script with Jieyin and Zhunti. 118 119 120 146

Humanity and the Western Tradition

When Nuwa cannot find how to put her Creation Dao into practice, Xuande guides her toward the idea of creating an entirely new race born with innate Dao Bodies. He offers a suitable clearing beside Mount Sumeru, where she prepares her work under the watch of the three Western cultivators. 164

After Nuwa attains the Dao, she entrusts humanity to Xuande's care. He sends disciples to teach writing and medicine and protects the Human Race for tens of thousands of years. He also supports Fuxi's acceptance of the Human Creation Whip, recognizing that the treasure should be held by the person best able to realize its purpose. 174 241

Xuande, Jieyin, and Zhunti later settle their karmic ties with the Mystic Gate and establish the Western Sect. Xuande's violet-gold manifestation embodies the insights and karmic connections accumulated through Hongjun's three sermons, rather than Primordial Violet Qi, which he has never possessed. 201

Deliverance and the Underworld

Following the Witch-Demon war, Houtu seeks Xuande's method for delivering the countless restless dead. He teaches her the complete Western method and travels with her and Randeng, helping soothe departed souls while her Earth Dao begins to merge with the practice. 183

Xuande confronts Minghe at the Blood Sea and assists Houtu in establishing the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Their cooperation makes him one of her most trusted allies. 185 209 234

Recognizing the Underworld's shortage of officials and the Witch Clan's vulnerability to a future tribulation, he proposes appointing witches to divine offices. Houtu authorizes the plan with the Projection of the Six Paths Reincarnation Disk and Great Emperor Fengdu's Token. Xuande subsequently holds the office of Great Emperor Fengdu. 192 203

Attaining Hunyuan in Chaos

Xuande leaves the Western Sect in Jieyin and Zhunti's care and enters Chaos to attempt a breakthrough beyond Sub-Saint. After arranging his Obsession Corpse's reincarnation, he prepares to combine the White and Black Lotuses with his own foundation through the Creation Cauldron. 203

Protected by Nuwa's Creation Jade Talisman, he absorbs Chaos Green Lotus Origin Essence and harmonizes the laws of merit, purification, and destruction. After the West wins all three contests, Houtu and Nuwa confirm its victory, and Hongjun accepts the outcome. Xuande claims the Creation Azure Lotus at Buzhou Mountain and returns to Brahma Sound Cave on Mount Sumeru to refine it, while Jieyin and Zhunti guard his seclusion. 226

Confronting Hongjun

After refining the Creation Azure Lotus, Xuande intervenes on the shattered Witch-Demon battlefield to protect the Twelve Ancestral Witches and the Dutian Divine Fiends Formation.
