Background

Kazama was a transmigrator who spent two years in Kirigakure under the Blood Mist policy. Born into the Kaguya Clan, he suffered from a severe Bloodline Disease while charging the Evolution Equation, a phantom obelisk that can safely complete an evolution once its required materials and chakra are supplied. 1

With the Kaguya Clan facing extermination, Kazama initially planned only to escape Kirigakure, obtain Byakugan material, and evolve into an Ōtsutsuki to survive. The clan head’s trust and the plight of the clan’s women and children forced him to take responsibility instead. 4

He recruited Kimimaro into an organization called the Alliance, then led six Kaguya children out of Kirigakure with supplies, money, ninja tools, and elemental-ninjutsu scrolls. 2 5 He later arranged for Orochimaru to train the children in exchange for Kaguya Clan resources and information on immortality. 7

Kazama entered Konoha to obtain Byakugan material, using Danzō’s scheme surrounding the Hyūga Clan to secure two Byakugan. He escaped to the Forest of Death and began the evolution that would either cure him or end his life. 23 24 Kisame protected him through the transformation, allowing Kazama to become a pure-blooded Ōtsutsuki. 25 27

Appearance

Kazama’s appearance changed drastically after his Ōtsutsuki evolution.

• Before evolving, he had white hair, deep green eyes, red round eyebrows, pale skin, and a gaunt, sickly build. 1
• During his incomplete transformation, he shrank from roughly 1.75 m to 1.5 m and became physically fuller. 26
• His eyes became Byakugan-white; his left eye was purer white while his right initially retained traces of green. 26

Personality

Kazama is survival-driven, calculating, and highly opportunistic. He readily uses intelligence, negotiation, deception, and carefully staged displays of power to secure protection or resources from people such as Orochimaru, Kisame, and Danzō. 7 11 20

Despite his initial desire to flee alone, he is affected by the Kaguya Clan’s pride and the vulnerability of its surviving children. He assumes responsibility for their escape, seeks training for them, and regards Kimimaro as someone he intends to evolve rather than abandon. 2 4 5

He is ambitious about transcending humanity and eventually obtaining a Ten-Tails and God Tree, but he is not reckless without calculation. He rejects approaching Isshiki directly because of the danger posed by Isshiki’s vessel, Karma, and Ten-Tails. 28 29

Kazama witnesses the Kaguya Clan’s doomed rebellion against the Fourth Mizukage’s regime. Rather than remain for mutual destruction, he evacuates six children, secures the clan’s remaining resources, and flees Kirigakure. 4 5

Orochimaru Alliance

He intimidates Orochimaru with All-Killing Ash Bones and negotiates training for the surviving Kaguya children, while obtaining a private channel to Danzō in return for Akatsuki intelligence. 7

Konoha Infiltration and Ōtsutsuki Evolution

Kazama manipulates the turmoil surrounding the Hyūga Clan to obtain Byakugan material. His resulting evolution nearly kills him, but Kisame protects him until he emerges as a pure-blooded Ōtsutsuki. 23 28

Training Under Kisame

Following his transformation, Kazama studies Water Release, taijutsu, chakra manipulation, and original ninjutsu creation under Kisame’s extreme training regimen. He develops Storm Release and later Blood Release. 37 48

Takigakure Deterrence

After Hero Water raises his chakra to 300 Cards and enables Yin-Yang Release, Kazama overwhelms Takigakure’s ninja with chakra pressure, subdues the Seven-Tails, and demands the village preserve its Hero Water-producing tree. 54 55

Kisame’s Departure

Kazama’s intelligence altered Kisame’s path in Kirigakure, allowing him to contact Elder Genji and act against Suikazan Fuguki’s betrayal. When Kisame departs, Kazama thanks him for his protection and guidance but rejects the idea that his future lies in returning to Kirigakure. 56
