Second Shinobi World War

Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya earn the title of Sannin after surviving their encounter with Hanzō of the Salamander. The battle leaves them requiring lengthy recovery, particularly from the Salamander’s poison. Orochimaru sends Hiruzen reports while Jiraiya delays their return to teach orphans in the Land of Rain 28.

The death of his disciple Nawaki, Tsunade’s younger brother, leaves Orochimaru feeling guilty and sharply aware of human fragility. He becomes dismissive of weak people pursuing heroic ambitions. During the war, he also fights Bunpuku’s fully manifested Shukaku: neither can quickly defeat the other, and the encounter sparks his interest in Tailed Beasts 38 39 40.

Taking Toneri as a Disciple

Although reluctant to take another student, Orochimaru follows Hiruzen’s request to approach Toneri. His interest is strengthened by learning that Toneri is the Two-Tails Jinchūriki. Toneri interprets the arrangement as Hiruzen connecting a prospective Hokage successor with a Jinchūriki 38 39.

Orochimaru tests Toneri with venomous snakes and a giant python. After Toneri defeats the python using the Two-Tails’ chakra, their arrangement develops into laboratory assistance in exchange for instruction. Orochimaru supplies elemental ninjutsu scrolls and later brings him to Ryūchi Cave to obtain a snake-summoning contract 40 41 53 54.

Their shared research gradually changes Orochimaru’s view of Toneri from a promising subject and student to a kindred spirit. After watching Toneri organize samples collected during the Chūnin Exams, he explicitly praises the decision to take him as his disciple 132.

Hokage Candidacy and Wartime Command

Orochimaru becomes a leading candidate to succeed Hiruzen, competing particularly with Hatake Sakumo. Hiruzen favors his exceptional talent and their teacher–student bond; Orochimaru’s commoner background also leads Hiruzen to believe he would protect the Sarutobi clan. Sakumo’s eventual death strengthens Orochimaru’s determination to pursue eternal life 155 156 172.

At the outbreak of the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru receives overall command against Sunagakure. He and Toneri lead a 3,000-ninja force toward the Land of Rain, although Toneri’s medical division operates independently of his command structure. Orochimaru fights Chiyo with Manda and later permits her retreat after Sunagakure’s heavy losses 188 189 190 192.

Evidence of forbidden experimentation causes Hiruzen to remove Orochimaru from consideration as his successor. Minato replaces him as commander, while Hiruzen recalls him to Konoha for closer supervision. Orochimaru recognizes the political damage and feels disheartened by his teacher’s decision 257 258.

Public Separation and Continued Partnership

Orochimaru and Toneri stage a destructive fight in the Forest of Death to provide grounds for claiming they have broken ties. After Toneri becomes Fourth Hokage, Orochimaru abandons the idea of defecting.
