Background / History

Jie was raised collectively by the Uchiha after his own family died on the battlefield. He remembers neighbors Aunt Xin and Uncle Lie as people who helped raise him, making the aftermath of their deaths during the Uchiha massacre especially painful. From the day he transmigrated into the clan, he had prepared first to save himself, then his friends and the Uchiha as a whole. 3

Before the massacre, he was publicly known as a gentle, courteous, elegant Uchiha who was unusually popular with both civilians and shinobi. Behind that image, he had concluded that Root and the Hokage were preparing to destroy the clan and planned to escape during the weakening of Konoha’s sensory barrier at sunset. 1

Uchiha Itachi intercepted him at the village barrier. Jie tried to provoke Itachi and delay him with illusions, but was caught in Tsukuyomi and tortured for three days within the illusion. He nevertheless survived the events surrounding the massacre, later burying the clan’s ashes—including ashes attributed to himself—and leaving his Special Jonin certification on his own grave to support his presumed death. 1 6

Jie had researched the Uchiha clan’s psychological condition and intended to seek Tsunade’s consultation after becoming a Jonin. A surviving scroll, Uchiha Clan’s Mental Illness Research, was later seized by Root and presented to Hiruzen Sarutobi. 4 83

Appearance

Jie usually conceals his identity with Anbu masks, Root uniforms, cosmetics, colored contacts, and human-skin masks (including a young Danzo disguise). His visible Sharingan are asymmetrical: a Single-Tomoe left eye, often hidden behind a gold-rimmed monocle, and a Three-Tomoe right eye. 1 86 92 93

  • Often presents himself as a refined, smiling figure despite his threatening reputation. 1
  • Uses a gold-rimmed monocle over his left Sharingan. 1
  • Regularly adopts the faces and clothing of other shinobi to misdirect enemies. 59 80 92 93
  • Sustained blood tears appear after heavy Mangekyo use. 108

Personality

Jie is calculating, irreverent, and willing to use deception, abduction, experimentation, and psychological pressure to accomplish his objectives. He openly dismisses idealized views of Konoha’s Will of Fire and considers schemes necessary for survival and leadership. 6 7 37

His cruelty is tempered by genuine attachment to selected people. He mourns the Uchiha dead, remains concerned for former teammates, protects Hinata’s identity while traveling, and invests heavily in her training, medicine, and equipment. 3 6 48 50

Jie is particularly fixated on Uchiha Itachi’s decision to annihilate the clan. Rather than pursuing only immediate physical revenge, he seeks to expose, understand, and torment Itachi’s conscience. 51 80 145

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan

Jie’s dōjutsu supports copying, cloning, perception, Genjutsu, and control over Sharingan derived from his own clones.

  • His ocular techniques can create clones that retain genuine Sharingan rather than mere imitations. 7
  • He copied the Fourth Mizukage’s Wind Release and later reproduced the masked man’s phasing ocular technique for short periods. 66 106
  • He broke free from Itachi’s Tsukuyomi and countered him in a Mangekyo Genjutsu battle. 86
  • Sharingan transplanted from one of his earlier clones remain linked to him; he can influence Tsunade through them without ordinary Genjutsu. 93
  • Prolonged use causes strain, including blood tears; his eyes are not Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. 108
  • Capable of using spatial manipulation via Kamui to dismantle and swallow heavy gravitational forces like Pain's Shinra Tensei. 319

Genjutsu

Genjutsu is Jie's foremost specialty and the core of his combat style.

  • Uses illusions to provoke opponents, manipulate perceptions, infiltrate guarded locations, and gain access to underworld contacts. 1 49 105
  • Created Sharingan Genjutsu: Meditation Basin Technique, which lets targets experience Hyuga Yue’s memories through a medium connected to Yue. 24 25
  • Meditation Basin’s environment deteriorates when its users move too far from the person whose memory serves as its medium. 25
  • Developed a control-oriented Genjutsu based on his influence over Tsunade, allowing him to dominate Hozuki Mangetsu; it requires Jie to remain nearby and continually exert chakra influence. 104
  • Can use Genjutsu to inflict emotional stimuli intended to aid Sharingan evolution, though recreating a target’s deepest trauma is difficult. 96
  • Employs advanced ambient Genjutsu like crystal dust illusions that can distort target perceptions and disorient opponents like Tsunade. 246

Ninjutsu and Combat

Though he avoids straightforward fights when possible, Jie possesses a broad, adaptable ninjutsu arsenal.

  • Earth Release — Alters terrain into a swamp capable of trapping opponents. 17
  • Rasengan — Countered Kakashi’s Raikiri, leaving both combatants incapacitated. 18
  • Wind Release — Copied a technique from the Fourth Mizukage and redirected Terumi Mei’s acidic vapor. 66
  • Fire Release: Great Fire Dragon — Used against the masked man’s Wood Release. 106
  • Raikiri — Copied and used it against the masked man, including a lightning-coated body technique that injured him through the timing of his phasing. 107
  • Rashomon — Summoned as a defensive barrier against an ambush. 105
  • Shadow Clone Technique — Uses clones for deception, infiltration, and transformations. 80 105 121

Laughter System and Recovery

Jie possesses a simple system visible at the edge of his vision after awakening his eyes.

  • Genuine laughter grants him one day of lifespan per laugh. 2
  • He can spend accumulated lifespan to recover from injuries, provided he does not die immediately. 2
  • Splitting himself through ocular techniques consumed most of his stored lifespan, leaving him reliant on further laughter to recover. 2

Research and Bloodline Knowledge

Jie conducts research into dōjutsu, inherited bloodlines, mental illness, and human experimentation.

  • Authored Uchiha Clan’s Mental Illness Research, including discussion of schizophrenia. 83
  • Understands the emotional suffering required for Sharingan awakening and evolution. 96 175
  • Provided Orochimaru with Ao’s Byakugan for research and sought ways to study or break the Hyuga Caged Bird Seal. 97 98
  • Pursues the collection of bloodlines descended from the Sage of Six Paths in hopes of creating a “second Sage of Six Paths.” 121
  • Warned Tsunade that transplanting eyes to evolve her Sharingan could risk turning her into his clone. 125

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Gold-rimmed monocle used to cover his left Sharingan. 1
  • Anbu, Root, and human-skin disguises (including young Danzo); makeup and colored contact lenses. 20 86 92 93
  • Storage scrolls and specialized Genjutsu scroll arrays. 7 24
  • Test tubes containing awakened Sharingan and Ao’s Byakugan. 7 97
  • Ninja sword, kunai, shuriken, explosive tags, and other ninja tools. 1 42
  • Hiramekarei, temporarily seized while fighting in Kirigakure. 66

Relationships

  • Uchiha Itachi — Cousin and ideological enemy. Jie survived Itachi’s Tsukuyomi, repeatedly probes whether Itachi regrets the massacre, and intends to torment him psychologically rather than simply kill him. 1 51 145
  • Hyuga Hinata — Initially abducted as a prospective experiment, then became Jie's disciple. He trains, funds, protects, and guides her while also manipulating her understanding of the Hyuga clan. 7 21 35 50
  • Hyuga Yue — Childhood friend and former academy classmate. Their shared laughter earned them the nickname “Smiling Sisters”; Yue’s disappearance deeply affected Jie. 20 24
  • Sarutobi Kou — Former Anbu captain and teammate. She helps arrange his escape from Konoha, and their shared rejection of the Will of Fire forms a foundation of trust. 6
  • Nara Luyu — Former teammate and collaborator in developing Hinata’s medicinal baths. Jie left Konoha partly because he believed he could not help Luyu and Tsuki while remaining under Konoha’s political order. 6 48
  • Mr. An — Close friend and owner of the Money Exchange. Mr. An considers their bond closer than blood brothers and assists Jie with intelligence and underworld access. 49 50
  • Tsunade — Research collaborator and temporary combat partner. Jie can influence the Sharingan she received from one of his clones, while Tsunade assists in his bloodline-related pursuits. 93 104 121
  • Orochimaru — Research partner. Jie offers Sharingan evolution data and Byakugan samples in exchange for Orochimaru’s expertise. 95 97
  • Uchiha Izumi — Traveling companion under Jie's protection. He initially resists taking her into danger but accepts her insistence after she awakens her Sharingan. 72
  • Old Man — Mentor figure and trusted confidant. Jie admits his past cowardice to him and recounts his missions in the Land of Water. 71
  • Hozuki Mangetsu — Controlled pawn under Jie's Genjutsu. 104
