Background

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, the Senju Clan’s princess, and the founder of Konohagakure’s Medical Ninja system. Her standing is such that Konoha’s medical ninja are expected to call her “Teacher.” 51

Despite that reputation, she spends her time outside Konoha gambling and drinking heavily. Her public behavior at Mr. An’s casino shocks Hinata, who had admired her as a model female ninja. 51 52

Mr. An approaches Tsunade with an offer involving Uchiha Itachi and a pair of preserved Sharingan. While she only agrees to capture Itachi if she encounters him as a Konoha rogue ninja, she becomes interested in the possibility of nurturing the eyes with her Senju chakra and pursuing the Rinnegan. 53

Tsunade ultimately chooses to have Shizune transplant the two Sharingan into her eye sockets. The surgery gives her access to the eyes’ abilities, but also initiates a dangerous connection between her chakra and Uchiha Jie, the original owner of the eyes. 55 92

As her fusion with the transplanted eyes deepens, Tsunade becomes able to unconsciously draw chakra from Uchiha Jie through their ocular link. Although she initially views the connection primarily as a potential battlefield advantage, it further confirms that her eyes are not fully separate from their original owner. 222

Later, Tsunade accepts Hashirama Senju’s preserved body tissue in pursuit of a stronger Senju bloodline and Wood Release. The First Hokage’s cells violently assimilate into her body until Uchiha Jie helps force them and their chakra into her Yin Seal, transforming the seal into a controllable reservoir of Hashirama’s power. 239 240 242 243

Appearance

Tsunade is a striking woman with long light-blonde hair tied in a ponytail. She is usually recognized by her tea-green coat bearing a large “Gambling” character and by her imposing physical presence. 91

  • Her original eyes are orange. 51 91
  • Her transplanted eyes appear black while inactive. 55
  • When activated, her eyes turn crimson with three black tomoe. 55
  • She uses orange-colored contacts to conceal the Sharingan while traveling. 91 95
  • Her Yin Seal appears as a pale-blue diamond on her forehead; after it is repurposed to contain Hashirama’s cells, its color becomes markedly paler. 242 243
  • Releasing the chakra previously stored in the Yin Seal causes her concealed age to surface rapidly, leaving wrinkles and looser skin until the seal’s new power stabilizes her appearance again. 242 243

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, impatient, and easily provoked. She treats Mr. An with open contempt when he interrupts her gambling, and she reacts to irritating remarks with threats of physical violence. 52 96

Her reckless gambling and drinking conceal an exceptional medical mind and a strong personal code. She refuses to revive her brother and first love through Impure World Reincarnation because it requires sacrificing the living for the dead. 94

The fusion between her Senju chakra and the Sharingan affects her behavior. Orochimaru observes that she has become more assertive, impulsive, and unlike her former self; Tsunade jokingly embraces the label of a “bad girl.” 100

She nevertheless remains protective toward younger ninja. When traveling with Hinata and Izumi, she moves closer to them during a confrontation and shows concern for their safety. 92 93

By the time Kurenai encounters her at Orochimaru’s base, Tsunade is calm and focused on treating Kimimaro, showing none of her earlier recklessness. 172

Tsunade remains suspicious of Uchiha Jie’s schemes and concerned with Konoha’s future. She presses him about his intentions regarding the Hokage position, and later reflects on her own potential role as Hokage after seeing a vision of Konoha’s distant future. 192 223

Abilities & Skills

Medical Ninjutsu

Tsunade is regarded as the foremost Medical Ninja and established Konoha’s Medical Ninja system. 51

  • Performs advanced diagnosis, including identifying a Kaguya child’s rare Kekkei Genkai disease. 122
  • Uses the Mystical Palm Technique to stabilize a Hyuga Branch Family member after the Caged Bird Seal is triggered. 101
  • Treats difficult cases at Orochimaru’s base, including Kimimaro. 172
  • Has overcome her hemophobia since receiving the Sharingan. 101
  • Her poisons can silently affect opponents in battle, though enemies with Hashirama-cell regeneration can adapt quickly. 105
  • Quickly identifies and counters Hashirama’s toxic pollen with an antidote and protective mask during her Wood Release training. 249
  • Provides conservative emergency assessments and treatment for severely injured ninja, including Konan after the Amegakure conflict. 341

Yin Seal

Tsunade’s Yin Seal is an Uzumaki Clan sealing technique taught to her by Uzumaki Mito. It traditionally stores chakra for healing, explosive releases, and preserving the user’s appearance. 242

  • Releases immense stored chakra to support her body in battle and to break powerful genjutsu. 242 246
  • Now seals Hashirama Senju’s cells and chakra rather than merely storing Tsunade’s excess chakra. 242 243
  • Allows her to regulate the release of Hashirama’s chakra for Wood Release and to maintain her appearance. 243
  • Its depletion temporarily reveals Tsunade’s natural aging before the seal is stabilized in its altered state. 242 243

Monstrous Strength

Tsunade possesses overwhelming physical strength, capable of shattering chakra-infused ice, bone constructs, and an opponent’s body with single blows. 92 103 104

  • Her punches repeatedly disperse Hozuki Mangetsu’s Water Transformation body. 103
  • She can pressure opponents who rely on intangibility by forcing them to evade repeatedly. 105
  • Her strength is ineffective at permanently damaging Mangetsu while his Water Transformation Technique remains active. 103
  • Her attacks can crack Uchiha Jie’s Susanoo and leave deep impressions in Hashirama’s reinforced Wood Release. 246 248
  • She can smash through ordinary wood and shattered terrain with ease, though the First Hokage’s Wood Release can withstand and redirect her blows. 248 249

Three-Tomoe Sharingan

Tsunade’s transplanted Sharingan provide Uchiha ocular abilities supported by her Senju chakra. 55

  • Can activate and deactivate the Sharingan voluntarily. 55
  • Perceives minute details and chakra flow. 55
  • Copies hand seals and ninjutsu after observing them. 55 103
  • Uses Sharingan-enhanced Fire Style against Wood Release. 106
  • Gains stronger visual perception in combat. 105
  • Continues to lose chakra to the eyes even when they are inactive. 55
  • Uses the Sharingan’s perception to recognize Orochimaru’s ocular techniques and see through his genjutsu-based disguises. 144
  • Uses the eyes alongside her altered Yin Seal to direct Hashirama’s chakra and reproduce Wood Release techniques during training. 243 249

Wood Release

After integrating Hashirama Senju’s cells into her Yin Seal, Tsunade gains access to Wood Release fueled by the First Hokage’s sealed chakra. 242 243

  • Can produce trees, vines, wooden spikes, and flowering growths directly from the ground. 243 245
  • Uses Wood Release: Cutting Sprigs Jutsu to pierce Orochimaru with wooden spikes. 245
  • Creates Wood Clones to intercept attacks and protect herself. 245
  • Forms Wood Golems and Multiple Wood Clones after observing Hashirama’s techniques. 249
  • Her Wood Release consumes substantial chakra, and she remains less proficient than Hashirama during their training battle. 249

Byakugan

Tsunade possesses the Byakugan, which she reveals while monitoring the Amegakure battle alongside Orochimaru and Jiraiya. 330

Sharingan Fusion Risks

Tsunade’s eyes are not fully independent from their original owner.

  • Uchiha Jie can exert control through the transplanted eyes, forcing Tsunade’s body to obey commands for a short time. 92
  • Her chakra and personality change as the Senju and Uchiha components merge. 99 100
  • The Slug initially rejects her altered chakra, though it later adapts. 91 129
  • She remains susceptible to powerful Sharingan genjutsu despite her Senju lineage and her own Sharingan. 96
  • Premature Mangekyo evolution may destabilize the balance of her bloodline and transform her into Uchiha Jie’s clone. 125
  • Her ocular connection with Uchiha Jie can cause her to unconsciously siphon his chakra while she refines chakra. 222
  • Even the addition of Hashirama’s cells and chakra fails to advance her transplanted eyes into the Mangekyo Sharingan. 242
  • Although Uchiha Jie can still briefly catch her in genjutsu, she can break free rapidly by increasing the output of her Yin Seal and activating her Sharingan. 246
