Background / History
Orochimaru was one of the three shinobi later known as the Sannin, alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya. The title originated from the three fighting Hanzō of Amegakure together to a standstill. Though less publicly famous than Tsunade, he was widely feared among jōnin and Konoha’s leadership; clan elders warned their children to flee from him. 72
A former disciple of the Third Hokage, Orochimaru became Konoha’s only rogue Sannin after conducting human experiments. Hiruzen later recognized that Danzō had collaborated in those experiments while Orochimaru bore the public blame. 137 166
After settling in the Land of Rice Fields, he established an underground laboratory beneath an outwardly peaceful forest village. Its loyal residents relayed disturbances and discoveries to him, while the laboratory itself contained extensive equipment and cultivation tanks holding human test subjects. 97
Appearance
Orochimaru is usually depicted as a pale, ghostlike figure in white clothing. His body and appearance are unusually mutable, reflecting his snake-based techniques and consciousness-transfer research.
- Pale face and dark eyes; later possesses a pair of three-tomoe Sharingan. 136
- Often wears a pure white robe; at his newer base, he wears white clothing and gold-rimmed glasses. 136 170
- Can stretch, soften, shed, or replace his body in serpent-like ways. 136 140 245
- Reverts to a female appearance when an exhausting transformation technique ends. 180
Personality
Orochimaru is methodical, composed, and intensely driven by knowledge. He speaks directly with those whose goals align with his own, readily making transactional alliances for rare bloodlines, dōjutsu, test subjects, or research materials. 97 98
He places research above conventional ethics. When Tsunade condemned his human experimentation, he dismissed it as an acceptable price compared with wartime casualties. His experiments repeatedly endanger or exploit others, including Hyūga subjects and Yūhi Kurenai. 97 173 180
Even under pressure, Orochimaru remains calm and manipulative. While trapped in Tsukuyomi, he provokes Itachi with information about the Uchiha clan massacre rather than yielding to interrogation. 137 138
Abilities & Skills
Snake-Based Techniques and Altered Physiology
Orochimaru uses snakes both as weapons and as extensions of his own body.
- Fires giant pythons from his sleeves and deploys snake-like summoned beasts against opponents. 136 142
- Escapes lethal damage by shedding or expelling a replacement body; he survived Amaterasu by leaving his burning body behind and spitting out an intact self. 136
- Can transform into a durable snake, slip through narrow gaps, and withstand Wood Release spikes with reinforced scales. 245
- Can disperse into poisonous snakes after being struck. 142
- Summons Manda, though Manda may dismiss itself rather than face overwhelming foes such as Susanoo or Wood Release. 142 245
Sharingan
Orochimaru implanted himself with a pair of three-tomoe Sharingan to expand his combat and research capabilities.
- Copied Kisame’s Water Release hand seals and countered the technique with an identical water-shark attack. 136
- Used the eyes to perceive and resist Kurenai’s genjutsu, though he struggled to block it. 173
- Relies on the Sharingan to perform demanding soul-seal research; prolonged use rapidly consumes his chakra and requires Soldier Pills for replenishment. 180
- Cannot resist Tsukuyomi despite possessing three-tomoe Sharingan. 137
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru mastered and improved the Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu, using the dead as sources of information, combatants, and bargaining tools.
- Temporarily revived Dan Katō to obtain information about the Spirit Transformation Technique. 103
- Controlled Mikoto Uchiha’s reincarnated body against Itachi. 142
- Summoned Hashirama Senju using a small amount of the First Hokage’s cells and a sacrifice. 246
- The reincarnated individual’s strength depends on the quality of the sacrifice used. 246
- Revived Yahiko so Nagato could speak with him, while using the reincarnation as a means of studying jutsu and gathering intelligence. 335
Sealing and Soul Research
Orochimaru’s principal long-term project is the Hyūga clan’s Caged Bird Seal.
- Allied with Uchiha Jie to research a method of breaking the seal, estimating that a complete solution could take three to five years. 98
- Determined that the Caged Bird Seal brands both the body and the soul, making it more difficult to remove than a conventional physical curse mark. 180
- Used the Spirit Transformation Technique and Sharingan-assisted chakra control to alter the seal’s pattern on Hyūga Chio’s soul. 180
- Achieved a breakthrough in modifying the seal and later succeeded in breaking the Caged Bird Seal. 180 190
- Shifted his research back to the seal after Hyūga Toshio successfully learned the Spirit Transformation Technique. 128
Surgery and Bloodline Research
Orochimaru performs high-risk surgeries involving dōjutsu, chakra pathways, and bloodline fusion.
- Examined Tsunade’s altered chakra and confirmed the merger of Senju and Uchiha bloodlines within her. 99 100
- Replaced Yūhi Kurenai’s eyes with Sharingan, documenting the severe chakra drain imposed on a non-Uchiha user. 173
- Conducted experiments on Hyūga test subjects to study the Caged Bird Seal, Byakugan, and Spirit Transformation Technique. 124 125 181
- Proposed separating the three consciousnesses within Obito and creating new bodies for them using First Uchiha cells. 385
Intelligence Network
Orochimaru maintains covert supply routes and information channels despite being a rogue ninja.
- Root personnel use disguised animal tracks as coded markers to arrange exchanges with him. 136
- Uses snakes to monitor or retrieve supplies from those exchanges. 136
- Sends high-classified intelligence protected by the Four Symbols Seal, including information on Itachi’s theft of the Rinnegan. 390
