Background / History

Dao Xuan originally arrived in the Great Desolation as Lin Xuan, a Golden Flood Dragon from Earth. After becoming a True Immortal and taking human form, he was targeted by the Heavenly Dao as an undocumented outsider. He survived by making a Great Dao vow that ended Lin Xuan's former existence and established Dao Xuan as a native cultivator of the Great Desolation. Soon afterward, he discovered a broken Chaos Bead within his Primordial Spirit. 1

His early years were defined by flight, cultivation, and opportunism. He escaped stronger Witch Clan pursuers, spent five hundred years cultivating beside an Enlightenment Tea Tree, and used the resulting strength to settle his pursuers permanently. 7 8 At Buzhou Mountain, he boldly requested tutelage from the Three Pure Ones and was accepted by Laozi as the latter's first disciple. 9

After leaving Kunlun, Dao Xuan sought an independent foundation rather than remaining permanently within a Saint's dojo. With guidance from Zhenyuanzi and Hongyun, he discovered Fangzhang Immortal Island, solved its Innate Chaos Great Array, and made it his base of operations. 18 19 20 Fangzhang later became the center from which he trained disciples, gathered treasures, aided the Human Race, and prepared for future calamities. 49 131

Appearance

Dao Xuan generally appears as a refined human Daoist after his transformation, with a jade-like complexion, clear brows, bright star-like eyes, and an elegant immortal bearing. 16 27

  • Often wears a Blue Gauze Headband, cloud-patterned yellow Daoist robes, a silk sash, and Cloud-Treading Boots. 16 27
  • His cultivation manifests through Pure Qi, Three Flowers above the crown, and Five Qi circulating within his body. 27
  • In major Human Race campaigns, he wears the Nine Heavens Flowing Cloud Crown and Xuan Yuan Ten Thousand Stars Robe while riding the Five Spirit Qilin. 98 100
  • His presence becomes markedly more imposing after becoming a Saint; his Primordial Spirit can perceive the laws and living beings of the Great Desolation directly. 178

Personality

Dao Xuan is survival-minded and highly adaptable. When faced with opponents he cannot immediately defeat, he prioritizes escape, concealment, cultivation, or outside support over reckless pride. He fled the Witch Clan while outmatched, temporarily withdrew from the Immortal Execution Sword Formation when its interconnected attacks proved too dangerous, and openly relied on his powerful connections when confronting Houtu. 7 31 157

He is also bold when an opportunity appears. He directly sought discipleship under the Three Pure Ones, claimed the withered vine associated with the Innate Gourd Vine, and repeatedly pursues rare treasures or opportunities despite the risks involved. 9 10 20

As a teacher and leader, Dao Xuan is attentive but demanding. He gives tailored techniques and treasures to his disciples, assigns them roles suited to their abilities, and deliberately allows the Human Race to develop independently rather than sheltering it forever. 40 49 99 He nevertheless shows a ruthless side toward enemies, using overwhelming force, psychological pressure, and calculated schemes to remove threats or reshape the balance of power. 84 119 142
