Background
Daoist Zhunti attempts to seize the Spiritual Stone Monkey, but Laozi intervenes during the conflict with Dao Xuan. After Dao Xuan withstands Zhunti’s three moves, he accepts the monkey as a disciple, names him Sun Wukong, and brings him to Fangzhang Island. Wukong joyfully embraces his new name and master. 106
At Fangzhang Island, Wukong is formally introduced as Dao Xuan’s fourth disciple. Dao Xuan imparts the Nine Revolutions Profound Technique and entrusts Yushu and Xuanji with guiding his early training. Wukong’s exceptional talent allows him to advance rapidly over three thousand years, though his enthusiastic practice frequently causes trouble around the island. 107
He later joins the Four Mixed Monkeys alongside Six-Eared Macaque, Red-buttocked Macaque Yuan Chi, and Gibbon Ape Yuan Hong. Dao Xuan teaches the four that their shared origins can recreate a trace of the Chaos Demon Ape’s power, provided their minds, origins, and endurance are synchronized. 131
