Background / History

Fang Moqi was already renowned as the Modu Forest Club’s strongest practical shooter before meeting Lan Mu. He held a doctorate in zoology, placed second in the International Amateur Shooting Competition, survived alone in the African savanna for forty-seven days, and once entered the Amazon with only a knife, surviving eleven days after killing a giant python for food. He was also a key member of the Forest Club’s Shooting Club and Explorers Club 20.

His defining competitive loss came in a life-and-death shooting contest against Benrato Gates, America’s top shooter and explorer. Fang Moqi’s arrow wounded Gates, but the wound later became infected; Fang Moqi was told this caused Gates’ death. He trained relentlessly afterward, only to later learn that Gates had actually been murdered in hospital by his brother Paul, who concealed the crime behind the infection story 39 74.

Fang Moqi initially approached Lan Mu as a rival. After losing an archery contest and then a jungle duel, he disclosed that Shen Qing Tang had sent him to assess Lan Mu for Hidden Dragon. Their competition developed into a close friendship, with Fang Moqi becoming Lan Mu’s liaison to the organization 32 33 41.

He later recruited Lan Mu for an operation in America: rescue Benrato’s sister Arida and personally avenge Benrato by killing Paul Gates. Fang Moqi regarded Benrato as his best friend despite their limited interaction, believing that their life-and-death duel had been a form of mutual understanding 74.

Personality

Fang Moqi is fearless, self-reliant, and drawn to extreme danger. He has survived life-threatening expeditions hundreds of times and openly calls himself the “Emperor of Seeking Death,” refusing to abandon Lan Mu in Aztec Lan even when escape was possible 96.

His casual, lazy demeanor contrasts sharply with his conduct under pressure. He can be dismissive toward police, reluctant to take on club duties, and impatient with social formalities, but becomes intensely focused when confronting danger or defending someone important to him 29 31 75.

He values loyalty above convenience. He pursued Paul Gates not for payment or personal gain, but because he believed Benrato’s murder and Arida’s disappearance could not be ignored. This same loyalty drove him to return alone into the Golden City to find Lan Mu 74 96.

Fang Moqi is also indecisive in personal relationships. He loved Du Yue’er for years but hesitated to marry her because he believed her family would reject an Extreme Hunter as a son-in-law. Lan Mu repeatedly criticized him for this hesitation 76.

Abilities & Skills

Archery

Fang Moqi is the nation’s top practical archer and a former world-class competitive shooter.

  • Uses a handmade sinew-and-bone bow designed for powerful, practical shooting 32.
  • Developed a forced-movement technique over three years to strike targets as small as mosquitoes 33.
  • Maintained an average of 1.31 accurate arrows per second during the missile exercise, despite losing decisively to Lan Mu’s sustained rate 33.
  • Can use rapid archery effectively in combat, including firing four arrows quickly enough to kill four armed opponents 306.
  • Recognized Lan Mu’s Orbit Arrow and accepted defeat after being struck from behind by a curved shot 41.

Wilderness Survival and Hunting

Fang Moqi is an accomplished hunter and explorer with exceptional fieldcraft.

  • Survived alone in the African savanna for forty-seven days and in the Amazon rainforest for eleven days with only a knife 20.
  • Speaks multiple local dialects and maintains contacts in remote regions, including Malai rainforest villages and Menba communities 35 161.
  • Reads animal traces and terrain well enough to find insects, reptiles, and small animals for food in Aztec Lan 97.
  • Uses concealment, ambush, counter-tracking, and terrain analysis to hunt human opponents 39 40.
  • Detected Lan Mu’s presence while Lan Mu was invisible, reacting to the latter’s killing intent and gaze 40.

Close-Quarters Combat

Fang Moqi combines peak conditioning with combat experience gained from fighting dangerous wildlife and surviving hostile environments.

  • Defeated eight attackers without using eight moves while deliberately holding back 74.
  • Neutralized Li Yunting’s armed bodyguards in close combat 75.
  • Fought a Silver Skeleton directly, severing its leg and stabbing it from behind 93.
  • Uses agility and disarming techniques against armed opponents and supernatural enemies 167.
  • Was capable of considering self-amputation to escape a stone Vajra’s grip 168.

Enhanced Physiology

Bi Fang blood transformed Fang Moqi’s body after his Shennongjia injuries.

  • Became immune to the pestilential miasma that endangered other expedition members 160.
  • Developed physical abilities beyond normal human limits, causing Hidden Dragon to suspect he had become a Contained Object derivative 160.
  • Endured severe trauma—including broken ribs, spinal damage, and internal injuries—while still defending himself from hostile creatures 115.
  • Withstood multiple gunshots long enough to lure Eagle Eye into the open and kill him 306.

Best Metal Control

Fang Moqi trained the mental control necessary to wield Best Metal after Lan Mu gave him a piece in Shambhala.

  • Initially could not activate the metal, but kept it to practice 171.
  • Learned to remotely move and shape it after several months of training 308.
  • Used Best Metal to enclose the Sand Sculpture in a containment sphere without direct contact 308.
  • His control remains weaker than Lan Mu’s Spiritual Power, but Lan Mu considered his progress exceptionally talented 308.

Supernatural Vision

After Eagle Eye’s death, a micro-crystal fused into Fang Moqi’s right eye.

  • Can see through obstacles and use enhanced visual modes 306.
  • Used his vision to bypass sentries and infiltrate a Rebel camp alone 307.
  • Remained unaffected by a massive sandstorm during the operation against Baza 307.
  • Lost vision in his left eye as a containment side effect 306.

Relationships

  • Lan Mu — Rival turned closest friend and frequent partner. Fang Moqi assessed Lan Mu for Hidden Dragon, accepted his overwhelming superiority in archery, and repeatedly entrusted his life to him 41 74 96.
  • Du Yue’er — His longtime lover and later wife. Her family opposed their relationship because of Fang Moqi’s wandering lifestyle, but he ultimately fled with her rather than allow her marriage to Li Yunting 76 160 274.
  • Benrato Gates — Former life-and-death opponent whom Fang Moqi considered his best friend. Gates’ murder motivated Fang Moqi’s American operation against Paul Gates 39 74.
  • Arida Gates — Benrato’s sister. Fang Moqi sought to rescue her after she disappeared while trying to expose Paul’s murder of Benrato 74.
  • Shen Qing Tang — Head of Hidden Dragon’s Group 93. Fang Moqi served as an assessor and liaison when the organization became interested in Lan Mu 41.
  • Du Yu — Friend and Forest Club associate. Du Yu frequently relied on Fang Moqi’s skills and used Lan Mu to pressure him into competitions and club work 31.
  • Leili — Fellow world-class explorer and old acquaintance. They worked together in Shambhala, though Fang Moqi identified himself primarily as a hunter rather than an explorer 162 167.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Forest Club and the Lan Mu Rivalry

Fang Moqi returned to the Forest Club while under suspicion from Director Ye Jinghong in the Heaven’s Punishment case. He challenged Lan Mu to rapid-fire archery, then to a mosquito-shooting contest, and was shocked by Lan Mu’s sustained speed, curved arrows, and apparent “internal energy” 29 31 32 33.

Malai Jungle Duel and Hidden Dragon Recruitment

During the Malai expedition, Fang Moqi challenged Lan Mu to a life-and-death jungle duel. Though he demonstrated superior stealth and tracking experience, Lan Mu defeated him with supernatural abilities. Fang Moqi then revealed Hidden Dragon’s interest in Lan Mu and became his intermediary with Shen Qing Tang 39 40 41.

Gates Family Operation

Fang Moqi enlisted Lan Mu to travel to America, rescue Arida Gates, and avenge Benrato Gates by killing Paul. He organized weapons, false identities, safe houses, intelligence, and an escape route through his criminal and overseas contacts 74 78.

Aztec Lan and the Golden City

Fang Moqi fought through Aztec Lan alongside Lan Mu, confronting undead, giant skeletons, and the Silver Skeleton. After escaping the Golden City, he voluntarily returned alone to rescue Lan Mu, was captured by the false “Moloch,” and endured imprisonment while believing Lan Mu was repeatedly trying to save him 93 96 97 98.

After Lan Mu finally extracted him, Fang Moqi helped destroy Moloch by severing the undead’s head and driving a sword through its brain 100.

Shennongjia Mutation

Fang Moqi joined Hidden Dragon’s Shennongjia expedition and was gravely injured by miasma and hostile creatures. Lan Mu saved him with Bi Fang blood, which later altered Fang Moqi’s genes and led Hidden Dragon to contain him as a suspected anomalous derivative 115 117 160.

Shambhala and the Blue White Society

Fang Moqi accompanied Lan Mu into Shambhala, led an effort to overthrow the King after discovering that corpse guards included fallen explorers and Hidden Dragon members, and fought the palace’s animated stone monsters 167 168.

Lan Mu later revealed the existence of Contained Objects and invited Fang Moqi into the Blue White Society. Fang Moqi accepted immediately, eager to explore the world’s hidden supernatural side 171.

Containment Operations

As a Blue White Society operative, Fang Moqi began taking active roles in containment missions. He absorbed Eagle Eye’s micro-crystal, infiltrated the Rebel camp in Niger, and completed his first solo containment by using Best Metal to secure the Sand Sculpture 306 307 308.

He later became a Blue White Society commander, led operations against MPI, and coordinated the assault on the Hiyori naval port during the effort to stop the Subcontinent Rise Plan 371 372 374.
