Background

Doflamingo was born into a Donquixote family that had once held Celestial Dragon status. His father voluntarily left the Holy Land, after which Doflamingo, his brother, and his mother were attacked by commoners who hated Celestial Dragons; his mother later died. The experience left him deeply embittered and helped shape his later cruelty. 183 256

Afterward, Doflamingo sought to return to the Holy Land and reclaim his former status. He was rejected and humiliated by the Celestial Dragons, including Donquixote Garrison, who spat on him after he begged to be accepted back. This rejection drove his desire for vengeance against the Holy Land and contributed to his alliance with Kaido. 118 177 228

He rose to lead the Donquixote Family, became King of Dressrosa and a Shichibukai, and used severe methods to rule Dressrosa after seizing it. 35 256

Personality

Doflamingo is cruel, theatrical, and vindictive. He takes visible pleasure in frightening others, particularly Celestial Dragons whom he sees as symbols of the society that rejected him. As Vice-Captain of the Knights of God, he fabricated accusations, forced Celestial Dragons into deadly “training,” and used his power to turn them into unwilling participants in his games. 228 229 349

He is also calculating and adaptive. When Akira’s power threatened the Donquixote Family, Doflamingo immediately ordered his subordinates not to resist Sakazuki and chose submission over their destruction. 89 He later recognized that serving Akira offered him more value than his former cooperation with Kaido, particularly because it gave him a path back to the Holy Land. 118

Despite his cruelty, Doflamingo is strongly attached to his family and increasingly values Akira’s recognition. He ordered his family to abandon the title “Young Master” at Headquarters and accept ideological re-education alongside him. 130

As Dressrosa’s king and the Donquixote Family’s leader, Doflamingo monitored the Navy crisis caused by Kaku’s mutiny. He ordered Vergo to investigate Kaku’s ambitions and contacted Kaido to prepare for possible war. 35

When Marine Headquarters imposed a lockdown on Sabaody before Whitebeard Jr.’s execution, Doflamingo defied Vice Admiral Bastille and clashed with him rather than submit immediately. He also attempted to recruit Jinbe and Jaz for a confrontation, but both refused. 76

Submission to Akira

After Akira publicly executed Jaz and made the Shichibukai bow, Doflamingo submitted to save his life. 85 When Akira ordered Sakazuki to either eliminate or incorporate the Donquixote Family, Doflamingo panicked and commanded every family member in Dressrosa to cooperate. 88 89

The family was incorporated into Marine Headquarters, and Doflamingo accepted ideological re-education. He declared that Headquarters would have “only Doflamingo,” not “Young Master.” 99 130

Return to the Holy Land

Doflamingo ultimately chose Akira over Kaido and offered Akira a secret in exchange for being taken to the Holy Land, where he believed his “lost dignity” remained. 118 During Akira’s Holy Land operation, he helped isolate the area with a Birdcage, fought CP0 agents, and battled Shepherd Ten Pitt. 172 173 174
