Background

Sakazuki's commitment to absolute justice originated in childhood, after pirates seemingly killed both of his parents. Believing his mother had died, he personally buried her; the later revelation that she survived left him burdened by guilt. Though she suffered dementia and no longer remembered his name, she remembered his preference for white rice and chili peppers. 15 19

Before Marine Headquarters' internal coup, Sakazuki served as an Admiral and had Akira as a vice admiral under his command. He initially disapproved of Akira's focus on building connections within Headquarters, but tolerated his conduct because Akira's ruthless treatment of pirates closely resembled—and at times surpassed—his own. 4

When Kaku's rebellion began, Sakazuki initially opposed it and attempted to stop the uprising at Marineford Prison. Momonga's disclosure that Kaku had rescued and cared for Sakazuki's mother for three years changed his position. Sakazuki publicly pledged himself to Kaku, killed Maynard to demonstrate his stance, and pressured Sengoku to recognize the new order. 10 11 19

Personality

Sakazuki is severe, disciplined, and intensely hostile toward pirates. His former interpretation of absolute justice permitted extreme measures, including treating allies and civilians as expendable if a mission required it; this reputation made many Headquarters personnel avoid him. 3

He is not easily provoked into losing control. During the early rebellion, he withheld his displeasure even as junior officers disregarded his authority, then directly confronted the conspirators rather than retreating. 4 10

Finding his mother alive forced him to reevaluate the isolation that had defined his life and service. His gratitude toward those who protected her became stronger than his loyalty to the old Marine order.
