Background / History

Gion served temporarily as an instructor at the officer training camp, where she recognized Akira's talent and introduced him to swordsmanship. Before witnessing his battle with Garp, she believed she remained slightly better than him with a sword; his use of Divine Evasion overturned that assessment 30.

Her loyalty also had a personal foundation: Akira looked after her family while she was away on missions. At his trial, she acknowledged his bribery and dealings with bounty hunters but challenged unsupported accusations of faction-building. She staked her future on the assurance that he could not be sentenced to death without a direct order from the Holy Land 2.

By the mutiny, Gion had spent three years secretly investigating the World Government. She supported Akira's takeover as a pursuit of “true justice” and revealed the existence of Imu, the hidden ruler residing in the Flower Chamber, to Sengoku and the assembled officers 17 18.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and slender 13.
  • Eyes: Described as peach-blossom eyes 138.
  • Hair: Wears her long hair coiled up; it comes loose and streams around her during her Conqueror's Haki awakening 138.
  • Uniform: Wears the coat or Justice cloak appropriate to her Marine rank 17 138 484.
  • Signature weapon: Usually carries Konpira at her hip 13 484.

Personality

Gion is gentle in ordinary interactions but uncompromising when protecting Akira or enforcing his authority. During the mutiny, she wants to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, particularly among the female officers she confines to their dormitory. Nevertheless, her orders threaten immediate execution for disobedience, and she personally handcuffs Kaki when he interferes 13 14.

Her devotion does not eliminate her concern for others. She tries to stop Akira and Garp from destroying Marineford and challenges Sakazuki when his Meteor Volcano threatens both Marine fleets alongside the pirates 29 30 138. Against pirates responsible for killing Marines, however, she accepts a harsher response: she watches Morgan brutalize Arlong without intervening 106.

Responsible and attentive, she repeatedly urges Akira to rest, warns him against drinking more coffee late at night, and offers him a place to stay when his residence becomes too chaotic. She would initially rather remain his assistant than command an independent fleet, believing he needs her help to manage the entire Navy 77.

Her later interactions with Hina show a more playful side. She imitates Hina's verbal habits, teases her lack of curiosity, and openly admits having feelings for Akira 266.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

  • Recognizes and develops promising swordsmen; she provided Akira's first swordsmanship instruction 30.
  • Produces ranged slashes and fights King through repeated high-speed aerial exchanges 132 137.
  • Severely wounds Jack with a rapid sequence of sword attacks and later defeats Queen using Haki-coated Konpira 138 147.
  • Before her Conqueror's Haki awakening, King's hybrid form and wing-generated wind blades complicate her offense 137.

Conqueror's Haki

  • Her awakening releases a storm across the Brachiosaurus, incapacitating many pirates and Marines 138.
  • Initially lacks sufficient control to spare allies; she apologizes to Kaki and explains that the ability has just awakened 138.
  • Coats Konpira to wound Kaido in coordination with Sakazuki and to strike Queen 144 147.
  • By the Flower Chamber confrontation, releases black-and-red Haki before fully unsheathing her sword, echoing Akira's earlier sword-drawing display 493.
  • Remains far below Imu's full output: Gion, Sakazuki, and Doflamingo recognize that even together they could not withstand the Haki Imu subsequently releases 495.

Armament and Observation Haki

  • Armament Haki: Hardens Konpira into a dark, lustrous blade while fighting King 133.
  • Observation Haki: Anticipates and evades Queen's barrage of laser beams 147.
  • Geppo: Reaches King in the air and initiates an aerial sword fight 132.
  • Soru: Evades King's sudden shockwave attack at the last moment 137.

Command and Administration

  • Coordinates the Momousagi Fleet with Sakazuki's fleet to block the Beasts Pirates' retreat and directs its artillery through a Den Den Mushi 132 134.
  • Handles recruitment paperwork and budget pressures during a worldwide draft that exceeds one million applicants 248.
  • Investigates personnel records, including Morgan's service history, and checks exceptional recruits' backgrounds 248 264.
  • Explains the Navy's teamwork-focused training and inheritable service-number system to Dragon 267.
  • Manages Marine affairs during Akira's extended absences and has long overseen officers' salaries 484 492.
  • Her administrative competence does not always match Akira's reform goals; he considers her perspective constrained by established ideas rather than a lack of ability 251.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Konpira / Kompira — Her signature famous sword. Akira borrows it to use Divine Evasion against Garp; she later formally presents it to him because she believes a sword enhances his imposing presence 13 30 46.
  • Enma — Akira confiscates the Great Grade sword from Kozuki Hiyori and throws it to Gion. The passage establishes its transfer to her, but not her mastery of it 209.
  • Justice — Shown carrying Akira's altered Supreme Grade Sword alongside Konpira during the approach to Zunesha; it is Akira's weapon, not established as her personal sword 97 238.
  • Den Den Mushi — Used for fleet commands, mission coordination, and communicating appointments from the Marshal's office 121 134 411.
  • Devil Fruit collection box — Entrusted with carrying and guarding the container that collects Devil Fruit abilities or energy 160 170 171.

Relationships

  • Akira / Kaku — Former swordsmanship pupil, trusted friend, superior, and romantic interest. He regards her as both mentor and friend and places her at the top of his list of trusted people. She admits her affection to Hina and eventually succeeds him as Fleet Admiral 30 77 266 491.
  • Hina — Close friend and colleague. Their friendship allows Hina to confront her during the mutiny; they later manage recruitment together. Hina replaces her as Akira's dedicated secretary after Gion becomes an Admiral 14 248 266 340.
  • Kaki — Persistent, repeatedly rejected suitor and fellow Marine officer. She arrests him during the mutiny but later summons him to fight with her forces in the New World. He confesses again immediately after her appointment as Fleet Admiral 13 134 492.
  • Sakazuki — Fellow Admiral and battlefield partner. They coordinate against Kaido, although she objects when his attack threatens their own troops 138 144.
  • Sengoku — Former Fleet Admiral whom she opposes during the takeover. She apologizes to him while affirming that her commitment to true justice requires following Akira 17.
  • Mihawk — Challenges his drunken demand for a duel with Akira and offers to fight in Akira's place 63.
  • Imu — Knows of the hidden ruler before many senior Marines. Although unsettled by Imu's kingly presence, she remains aligned with Akira and later joins the confrontation in the Flower Chamber 17 191 493.
  • Aqua — Affectionate mother figure. She gives Aqua snacks, hugs and kisses her, and is subsequently addressed as “Mother Gion” 301 308 503.
  • Her mother — Akira's care for her family contributes to Gion's loyalty. Her mother remains concerned about him even after his investigation is resolved 2 77.
