History
Jieyin and Zhunti sought opportunities for the West while still serving Hongjun. At Purple Cloud Palace, they obtained seats after begging for them and displacing Kunpeng, an incident later publicized by Chu Yan 6. They opposed Tongtian’s Immortal Slaying Sword Formation before becoming Saints; its sword light wounded Zhunti 11. Their Great Vows secured sainthood, but Jieyin later complained that the vows remained unfulfilled while the Eastern Saints had prospered 22 148.
Their Western lineage repeatedly competed for followers and destiny. Hongjun gave them the Palm Buddha Kingdom and Western Paradise to shelter their lineage after a calamity struck the West 72. They opened the Gate of Ultimate Bliss to draw living beings into the Western sect, angering the Eastern Saints; even after the gate closed, the influx restored their Three Flowers and Five Energies and increased Western destiny 115 116. Later, they used disciples and avatars to seize human infants and establish Western lineages, provoking a warning from Taiqing not to approach the humans of Buzhou Mountain 147.
After Hongjun reprimanded them, the pair planned to abandon the Xuanmen Immortal Path 148. A confrontation with the Eastern Saints gave them leverage: they threatened to expose a secret, pressed Hongjun for compensation, and obtained half the destiny of each of the three Eastern Saints’ sects 149 150 151. They then declared their departure from Xuanmen and founded Buddhism in the West, transferring their sect’s destiny to it 151 152 153.
Their later alliances remained uneasy. They surrendered more than half of Buddhism’s destiny when Chu Yan confronted them, but subsequently sent Buddhist disciples into conflicts over the Human Race 162 230 343. After devastating losses to their lineage, they sought to keep the West out of further fighting; Hongjun nevertheless refused their attempt to withdraw from the Investiture of the Gods 355 361 392.
