Background / History
Wutian found Tang Sanzang as an infant floating in a wooden basin in the Netherworld. After consulting the Book of Life and Death, Wutian named him Tang Sanzang, identifying him as connected to Golden Cicada while maintaining that Tang Sanzang and Golden Cicada were not wholly the same being. Wutian accepted him as a disciple to test whether his own Buddhist teachings could produce a clearer path than Golden Cicada’s inheritance. 295
For twenty years, Wutian taught him Buddhist principles while bringing him among the Human Race to witness suffering firsthand. Tang Sanzang developed exceptional understanding of Buddhist teachings, a clear distinction between good and evil, and foundations in both the Golden Core Great Dao and Human Race Martial Dao. Wutian deliberately withheld Buddhist supernatural powers until Tang Sanzang’s Dao Heart was sufficiently mature. 304
After being killed during the Yao Saint Mountain tribulation, Tang Sanzang’s phantom merged with the Funeral Dao Profound Coffin. Its Origin reshaped him into an Innate Dao Body marked by faint Funeral Dao divine patterns, freeing him to establish his own path rather than remain merely Golden Cicada’s reincarnation. 430 432
Appearance
Tang Sanzang is a bald monk most often seen in a radiant Brocade Cassock and carrying the Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff. After his reconstruction, dark Funeral Dao divine patterns became faintly visible beneath his skin. 304 432
- His Sixteen-Foot Golden Body manifests with Buddhist Golden Light and dense rules. 340
- He can deliberately temper his physique, including training while carrying Sun Wukong’s Ruyi Jingu Bang and absorbing Saint Beast White Tiger blood. 339
- His Funeral Dao power can manifest as the immense phantom of the Funeral Dao Profound Coffin. 480
Personality
Tang Sanzang is observant, calculating, and markedly unconventional for a monk. He recognizes deception quickly, as shown when he suspected Guanyin’s disguised approach outside Chang’an, seized her gifts, and fled rather than accept her planned favor. 304 He also treats the Journey to the West as a path for gaining strength, connections, and leverage rather than as a purely pious pilgrimage. 328 358
He has a strong hatred for those who harm humans and little patience for conventional restraint when confronting them. Although he often presents a compassionate exterior, he can be domineering toward disciples and ruthless toward enemies. 305 340 385 His determination to establish an independent identity becomes especially pronounced once he learns that Golden Cicada could ultimately claim the Merit and Destiny earned by his journey. 373
Abilities & Skills
Buddhist Doctrine and Dao Debate
Tang Sanzang possesses extraordinary understanding of Buddhist principles after Wutian’s instruction and later uses that understanding to challenge the Evil Sword Immortal’s path.
- Articulates Buddhist concepts through sacred phenomena during Dao debates. 492
- Declares that “Buddha originated from the Dao,” weakening the Evil Sword Immortal’s influence and undermining evil Buddhist spirits in Jiang Kingdom. 495 497
- Uses Buddhist doctrine pragmatically rather than as a strict code of conduct. 305 358
Golden Core Great Dao and Martial Dao
His early cultivation combines the Golden Core Great Dao with Human Race Martial Dao.
- Reached Early-stage Heavenly Immortal within twenty years of cultivation. 304
- Uses his physical strength and the Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff in direct combat. 305
- Pursues a perfected Sixteen-Foot Golden Body through strenuous training and White Tiger blood. 339
Cloud-Riding Escape Technique
Wutian taught Tang Sanzang a cloud-riding technique suited to evasion.
- Escapes three peak Heavenly Immortal monsters by riding his Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff. 305
- His early use of the technique is limited by his depleted Magic Power and inferior realm. 305
Funeral Dao and Law of Burial
After merging with the Funeral Dao Profound Coffin, Tang Sanzang wields a Dao focused on burial, annihilation, and the restoration of what has been wrongly taken.
- Declares a path to “bury heaven, bury earth, bury all beings.” 432
- Uses the coffin to strip the Evil Sword Immortal’s cultivation and return absorbed human emotions to their original owners through earthly Yin Merit. 495
- Annihilates Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, absorbing their souls to gain insight into the Law of Burial. 527
- Can employ the Cloud-Soaring Ferry as an ultimate move capable of engulfing Spirit Mountain and threatening its defenders. 526

Story Role / Major Arcs
Beginning the Pilgrimage
Tang Sanzang departs Chang’an alone after receiving the Brocade Cassock, Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff, Purple Gold Alms Bowl, and Travel Document. His first trial pits him against General Yin, Te Chushi, and Xiong Shanjun; he escapes rather than defeat the three peak Heavenly Immortal monsters directly. 304 305
At Five Elements Mountain, he meets Sun Wukong, initially attacks him, then agrees to free him in exchange for his service as a disciple. Huanglong later becomes his mount and second disciple, while Zhu Bajie joins as his third. 306 307 320 340
Growth Through the Western Journey
Tang Sanzang uses the pilgrimage’s tribulations to cultivate, acquire resources, and test the forces manipulating the Journey to the West. He seeks Ginseng Fruits at Wuzhuang Temple, confronts Elder Jinchi’s greed, and uses seized treasures for the education of remote tribes and kingdoms. 325 328 358
His independence is sharpened after Wutian reveals the danger posed by Golden Cicada’s eventual awakening. Tang Sanzang subsequently dies during the Yao Saint Mountain tribulation, but returns through the Funeral Dao Profound Coffin as an Innate Deity following his own Dao. 373 430 432
Final Tribulations and Completion
Near Spirit Mountain, Tang Sanzang refuses to let Lingyun Crossing strip the pilgrims of their bodies and uses the Travel Document, Purple Gold Alms Bowl, and Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner to force passage. 524 525
He then leads the assault against Manjushri Bodhisattva’s forces, employing the Cloud-Soaring Ferry and the Funeral Dao Profound Coffin. After passing the final tribulation at Mount Sumeru by standing before Demon Ancestor Luohu, Tang Sanzang returns to Great Tang with his disciples to announce the pilgrimage to the Heavenly Dao. 526 527 532 533
