Background / History
Itachi initially holds hostile, extremist views toward his own clan; Siming accuses him of adopting Shisui's methods for dealing with enemies against the Uchiha themselves. During the escalating Uchiha–Konoha conflict, he worries over the village's treatment of the clan and initially dismisses Siming's proposed solution as implausible 5 7.
Shisui's faith in Siming and Siming's decisive intervention alter Itachi's outlook. He begins reporting Root activity to Fugaku, alarming and delighting his father, who recognizes that Itachi has begun turning back toward the Uchiha Clan 16. Under Siming's direction, Itachi reveals his Mangekyō Sharingan to recruit like-minded subordinates while avoiding open exposure 27.
As the clan crisis deepens, Itachi serves as Siming's operative: he reports that anti-village sentiment is growing within the Uchiha, then receives the task of spreading sensitive information concerning Danzō throughout Konoha 37. He later joins Shisui in major campaigns for the Land of God, including the assault on Iwagakure and its confrontation with Ōnoki and Kitsuchi 159 160.
Appearance
Itachi is described as having a youthful but mature face, dark eyes, and pronounced tear troughs that contribute to his perpetually burdened expression 7.
- His eyes manifest as Mangekyō Sharingan before he later replaces them with crimson Tenseigan 27 227.
- He can manifest a crimson Susanoo armed with the Ten-Tails Sword and Yata Mirror 213 273.
Personality
Itachi is composed, observant, and politically sharper than he was at the beginning of the story. He can assess tense situations calmly, such as identifying the tactical weaknesses in Iwagakure's defense and coordinating with Shisui without needing verbal communication 159.
His loyalty to Siming and the Land of God is absolute. He repeatedly seeks greater strength because he considers himself unable to sufficiently protect Siming's domain, accepts painful procedures for additional power, and treats the succession and future of the Land of God as paramount 224 280 286.
This devotion also makes him ruthless and secretive. He threatens Orochimaru over any action harmful to Siming, pursues genetic enhancement without fully informing Neji, and is characterized by Neji as willing to use underhanded means to avoid falling behind 280 325. His rivalry with Neji is intense, but their mutual trust repeatedly enables them to fight as a coordinated pair 331 333.
Abilities & Skills
Genjutsu
Itachi remains an exceptional illusion specialist even after losing his Sharingan.
- Defeats Deidara with an Illusion Technique despite using Tenseigan rather than Sharingan 279.
- Can create a small-scale Tsukuyomi after fusing Tsukuyomi with Tenseigan illusion power 289.
- The small-scale Tsukuyomi can affect more than ten people at once and influence their minds 289.
Susanoo
His crimson Susanoo is a primary defensive and offensive construct.
- Uses the Yata Mirror to completely absorb Momoshiki's attack and shield Deidara 213.
- Wields the Ten-Tails Sword, which can be enhanced with Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion for both sealing and destructive force 273.
- His Complete-Body Susanoo was destroyed by Ōnoki's Dust Release, demonstrating its vulnerability to that technique 159.
Tenseigan
Itachi's crimson Tenseigan grants him Six Paths-level power and greatly increased dojutsu capacity.
- Successfully transplanted after an earlier attempt nearly killed him through bloodline rejection 216 227.
- Enables powerful offensive techniques, including Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion 273.
- Its sensory capacity cannot detect Siming after Siming's god-level evolution 344.
Penetration and Marking
Itachi possesses an investigative ability regarded as a major obstacle by hostile Ōtsutsuki.
- His penetration ability is the reason Ryushiki identifies him as the principal threat to infiltrating the Land of God 287 293.
- Works with Neji to mark Ryushiki and prevent his escape 284.
- Detects inconsistencies at battle sites by comparing the damage with known combat habits 282.
Fused Wheel Reincarnation Techniques
Itachi develops combinations of the Tenseigan's strongest attacks rather than relying on them separately.
- Fuses Golden and Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosions 289.
- Combines his Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion with Neji's to form a golden tornado that cuts through Suishiki's evolved Black Water 331.
- Uses Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion with Neji to kill Suishiki 332.
Relationships
- Uchiha Siming — Leader, mentor, and the object of Itachi's unwavering loyalty. Siming redirects Itachi away from anti-clan extremism, guides his power development, and entrusts him with protecting the Land of God 5 27 286.
- Uchiha Shisui — Close friend and longtime battlefield partner. They share trust during the Uchiha crisis and coordinate seamlessly against Iwagakure 7 159.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Father. Fugaku is overjoyed when Itachi begins warning him about Root and appears to renew his commitment to the Uchiha Clan 16.
- Hyūga Neji — Rival, teammate, and fellow Six Paths-level defender. Their competition is often hostile, but they repeatedly combine their abilities against Ōtsutsuki enemies 289 331 333.
- Orochimaru — Research collaborator with an adversarial dynamic. Itachi seeks her help to increase his power but threatens her over any betrayal or misuse of Siming's Gene Fluid 279 286.
- Deidara — Rival. Itachi's earlier genjutsu victory leaves Deidara resentful, and their later spar ends with Itachi defeating him again through illusion 278 279.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Uchiha–Konoha Conflict
Itachi's early hostility toward the Uchiha is challenged by Siming's intervention. He gradually becomes more clan-conscious, warns Fugaku about Root, and helps advance Siming's strategy against Danzō without openly provoking a civil war 5 16 37.
Land of God Campaigns
As a leading combatant of the Land of God, Itachi fights beside Shisui against Iwagakure. He remains calm under Dust Release pressure, uses Susanoo in coordinated assaults, and places confidence in Siming's overwhelming strength 159 161.
Tenseigan Enhancement
Driven by the desire to assist Siming against the Ōtsutsuki, Itachi attempts to transplant the Tenseigan, nearly dies from rejection, and refuses to surrender. After his body is made compatible, he successfully gains a crimson Tenseigan and rises to Six Paths level 216 224 227 228.
Ryushiki Incident
Ryushiki targets Itachi specifically because his penetration ability prevents free movement through the Land of God. Itachi and Neji confront him together, endure repeated defeats and deaths, and continue fighting until Siming intervenes 287 293 295 297.
Defense Against the Descending Ōtsutsuki
When six Ōtsutsuki approach the Ninja World in Siming's absence, Itachi and Neji immediately attempt to confront them. They later defeat Suishiki through a combined Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion, but remain behind to face six more invaders rather than lead the threat back to Siming 327 331 333.
Ōtsutsuki Evolution
After witnessing Siming's completed evolution, Itachi receives a Chakra Fruit alongside Neji and evolves into an Ōtsutsuki. He demonstrates the resulting power by neutralizing Deidara's Truth-Seeking Orb bombs 343 349.
Notable Quotes
“Every last Ōtsutsuki will die by our hands.” 332
“The Ōtsutsuki Clan isn't invincible. They aren't gods, just a slightly stronger race in the universe, and we happen to possess the power to slaughter this race!” 294
“As long as it helps you, it's worth it!” 227
Trivia
- Ryushiki considers Itachi, rather than Siming, the most dangerous Land of God opponent due to his detection abilities 287.
- Despite replacing his Sharingan with Tenseigan, Itachi retains his mastery of Illusion Technique 279.
- He repeatedly cleans Siming's floating island to demonstrate loyalty and gain recognition, turning the task into a rivalry with Neji 289 290.
