Background and Story Role

Laozi refined the Nine Revolutions Golden Elixir that later gained sentience and escaped his Eight Trigrams Furnace. Recognizing their karmic bond, he invited the newly formed being to remain on Kunlun Mountain as his second disciple. He gave the disciple an Innate Dao Body, named him Xuandan, and described their bond as half father and son 1 2.

He established harmony as the central rule for his two disciples, Xuandu and Xuandan. Laozi supplied Xuandan with the Taiqing Pill Formula, the Supreme Purity Golden Core Technique, the Four Symbols Cauldron, and cultivation materials, setting him on the path of the Golden Elixir Great Dao and alchemy 2 3.

During the Dragon Palace crisis, Laozi protected Xuandan and the Three Sects' disciples with overwhelming force. As the Three Sects' Grand Competition approached, Laozi personally prepared Xuandu and Xuandan. He explained the Inner Elixir and Outer Elixir divisions of the Golden Elixir Great Dao, then created the Spirit Swallowing Transformation Method specifically for Xuandan to absorb the Dragon Pearl's essence 46 47. Laozi's role as eldest brother includes restraining Tongtian when necessary. He used the Taiji Diagram to suppress Tongtian after a challenge to his authority, later joined Yuanshi in exposing and subduing Tongtian when he disguised himself as Demon Ancestor Luohu 179 191. Despite their clashes, Laozi values the Three Pure Ones' unity and acknowledges that Xuandan's arrival made Kunlun Mountain—and the brothers' relationship—livelier 87.

After the Three Pure Ones discovered a parallel Primordial Era, Laozi recognized the world's nature and led Xuandan, Xuandu, Guang Chengzi, and Duobao into it 376. Laozi is consistently composed, amiable, and patient. He receives Xuandan without pressure, gives generously to his disciples, and teaches through tailored guidance rather than forcing a single path upon them 1 2 47. Benevolence does not make him permissive.
