Background and History
Warring States Era and the Eye of the Moon Plan
Madara was a leading Uchiha of the Warring States period and a contemporary of Hashirama Senju. Their rivalry included a battle lasting three days and three nights. Following the Uchiha Stone Tablet’s instructions, Madara acquired a piece of Hashirama’s flesh during their confrontation and used Izanagi to survive an apparent death. He eventually awakened the Rinnegan in old age 200 408 415.
When Madara left Konoha, none of his clansmen followed him. Although he resented their decision, he remained proud of the clan’s achievements under his leadership 420 456.
Seeking a world without war, Madara adopted the Infinite Tsukuyomi as his solution. He treated Obito as his proxy and helped engineer Rin Nohara’s death with Black Zetsu. Rin carried a heart curse mark and the Three-Tails; unable to kill herself, she deliberately intercepted Kakashi’s Lightning Cutter to prevent the beast from destroying Konoha 287 312 418.
Obito eventually understood the manipulation but continued pursuing the dream world in which Rin could live. He also planned to remove his own heart seal and complete the Eye of the Moon Plan without resurrecting Madara 287 312.
Resurrection and Conflict with Feng An
Kabuto summons Madara while fighting Feng An. Madara immediately recognizes Impure World Reincarnation rather than the Rinne Rebirth he expected, resists Kabuto’s attempts at control, and notices his own Rinnegan in Feng An’s possession 402.
Madara protects Kabuto, initially believing the caster’s death would end his own existence. His battle with Feng An escalates through Fire Release, Wood Release, and Susanoo. After seeing Feng An’s Susanoo, he attempts to recruit him, but their confrontation continues when Feng An refuses 403 404 405.
Feng An subsequently takes Madara into the Kamui Dimension and explains that Black Zetsu is Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s will—not Madara’s—and that the Rinnegan’s history is part of a much older scheme. Madara remains cautious but begins doubting Black Zetsu 408 411.
Defeat and Abandonment of Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara joins Kabuto and Black Zetsu to retrieve the Rinnegan from Nagato, bringing him into another battle with Feng An. He releases his reanimation vessel, loses its projected eyes, and continues fighting with an eyeless Susanoo. Feng An defeats him, then saves him from a fatal fall with newly grown trees 411 413 415 416 417.
Madara admits defeat. Feng An challenges the Infinite Tsukuyomi as an escape from reality that would ultimately destroy humanity, rather than create lasting peace. Black Zetsu’s abandonment of Madara further undermines his claim to embody Madara’s will 417 418.
After seeing Hinata’s Tenseigan Chakra Mode, Madara demands his Rinnegan back. Feng An requires assurances that he will abandon Infinite Tsukuyomi. Madara swears to give it up rather than become humanity’s destroyer, then teaches Feng An Yin-Yang Release in exchange for one eye 419 420.
Renewed Hostility and Battle with Black Zetsu
Immediately after receiving the eye, Madara attacks Feng An with Limbo and Fire Release. Feng An counters him and warns him not to harm Hinata or Matatabi. Madara ends the confrontation and leaves for Cloud Village, intending to kill Kabuto as repayment for Feng An sparing him 421.
At Cloud Village, Madara overwhelms Kabuto with gravitational techniques and summons a meteor over him. His stated motive is repayment of a favor, not allegiance to Feng An 422 423.
Madara later battles Black Zetsu and Gō outside Hozuki Castle for several hours. He uses Limbo to restrain Gō while dropping a colossal meteor, destroying the prison and killing its inmates through the resulting shockwave. Black Zetsu and Gō escape the impact. Madara rejects Black Zetsu’s claim that they still share a goal, reasoning that the deception itself supports Feng An’s explanation 450 451.
Life in Konoha
Feng An persuades Madara to return to Konoha by warning him about other Ōtsutsuki threats—and by asking Hinata to prepare Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion when Madara resists. Feng An then builds him a wooden house next door 456 457.
Madara settles into village life and spends half a year learning to cook. Feng An and Hinata praise his food, and he becomes determined to defeat Hinata in a cooking competition. He also invites Nagato and Konan to dinner despite their former hostility 464 465.
After Hashirama’s return, Madara becomes jealous of his interest in Feng An. An argument over using sensory ninjutsu leads the pair to arrange a fight at their old meeting place. Hashirama later returns carrying the wounded, unconscious Madara on his back 499 506.
Voluntary Death
When Orochimaru releases Hashirama and the other summoned figures, Madara remains. Orochimaru explains that Madara’s modified body has effectively been fully revived and is difficult to dismiss. Madara pursues Feng An and begs to be killed so he can follow Hashirama to the Pure Land 539.
Madara confirms that he has nothing left to cling to in the living world, while acknowledging Feng An as a friend despite their age difference. Hinata pierces his heart with the extended Kusanagi Sword from a kilometer away. Madara deliberately suppresses the chakra moving toward his wound and dies 540.
Feng An buries him beneath a wooden mound reinforced with Yin-Yang Release and a sealing technique to prevent disturbance. He leaves Madara’s recovered Rinnegan with the body 540.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Long black hair and scarlet eyes in Ōnoki’s recollection 292.
- Clothing: Associated with standard Uchiha attire; emerges from Kabuto’s coffin wearing armor that rattles as he moves 292 402.
- Eyeless state: Keeps his eyes closed after releasing his reanimation vessel, relying on sensory perception until recovering one Rinnegan 415 421.
Personality
Madara is proud, domineering, and deeply resistant to being controlled. He regards strength as the basis for respect: Feng An’s abilities prompt an earnest offer of cooperation, and his eventual defeat leads him to acknowledge Feng An’s right to judge him. Kabuto’s control and Feng An’s Kotoamatsukami both meet fierce resistance 402 404 417.
His pursuit of Infinite Tsukuyomi originates in a desire to end war, not exterminate humanity. Once persuaded that the plan threatens human survival, he agrees to abandon it. His later confrontation with Black Zetsu shows that he can reassess evidence and identify the motives behind deception 418 419 451.
Hashirama is his strongest emotional vulnerability. Mentions of him can provoke jealousy, anger, excitement, or misplaced familiarity during battle. Madara repeatedly calls Feng An “Hashirama” when faced with Wood Release, and Hashirama’s criticism affects him far more than anyone else’s 405 416 452 499.
Despite his hostility, Madara can show concern and gratitude. He worries that Feng An and Hinata will be ostracized as tailed-beast hosts, seeks to repay Feng An’s mercy, and eventually develops an unexpectedly domestic rivalry over cooking 421 456 464.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Resistance to Control
Madara possesses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and can transform his reanimated eyes into Rinnegan 200 404.
- Breaks Feng An’s right-eye Kotoamatsukami after sensing his will being rewritten 404.
- Resists Kabuto’s detailed control, although Kabuto can initially impose a few simple commands 402 405.
- Uses Izanagi historically to survive his apparent death after fighting Hashirama 408.
Rinnegan
Madara’s original eyes provide abilities unavailable to his reanimated projections 403.
- Limbo: Border Jail: Produces shadows ordinarily invisible and undetectable to most opponents. Feng An describes its full capability as four shadows; Madara uses a shadow after recovering one eye 417 421.
- Preta Path: Absorbs Feng An’s Rasengan 421.
- Banshō Ten’in and Shinra Tensei: Pulls Kabuto toward him, then blasts him and his summoned technique away 422.
- Heavenly Transfer Celestial Star: Calls down enormous meteors, including one over 100 meters across above Kabuto and another that destroys Hozuki Castle 423 451.
- Flight: Travels through the air after recovering his right Rinnegan 422 539.
- Limits: His projected Rinnegan lack Limbo. Feng An can perceive his Limbo shadow with the other original eye, while Black Zetsu can see it and Gō can sense it 403 421 451.
Susanoo
Madara manifests a blue Susanoo whose complete form exceeds 200 meters in height 405.
- Wields a chakra greatsword at least 100 meters long 405.
- Throws a massive Yasaka Magatama at Black Zetsu 452.
- Can activate Susanoo without eyes because he previously possessed both Mangekyo Sharingan 415.
- Without sufficient Eye Power, his eyeless Susanoo is restricted to its initial stage and cannot gain Tengu Armor or become Perfect Susanoo 415.
- Feng An’s extended Kusanagi Sword cracks the unarmored eyeless form 415 416.
Fire Release and Wood Release
Madara combines large-scale elemental attacks with exceptionally fast hand seals 403.
- Dragon Flame Song Technique: Launches four fireballs at Feng An 403.
- Great Fire Annihilation: Attacks Feng An after detecting his sensory search 406.
- Majestic Annihilation: Produces a sea of flames at close range 421.
- Wood Dragon Jutsu: Binds Feng An with a dragon over ten meters long; Feng An destroys it with an enlarged Rasengan 403.
Yin-Yang Release and Sealing Knowledge
Madara understands Yin-Yang Release well enough to teach its principles to Feng An 420 421.
- Explains that using it requires Six Paths power; a Rinnegan can supply access for creating Black Receivers 420.
- Places heart curse marks on Obito and Rin as part of his control over them 287 312.
- Knows how to release his own Impure World Reincarnation vessel 405 415.
Sensory Perception and Battle Tactics
Madara remains capable of fighting and observing his surroundings without eyes 415.
- Detects Feng An’s sensory surveillance immediately 406.
- Uses Susanoo to pressure Feng An into teleporting, then attempts to predict his reappearance points 413.
- Recognizes the scale and nature of Hinata’s Tenseigan power 419 453.
Modified Body and Recovery
The supplied chapters describe Madara’s post-release body inconsistently.
- His release is initially presented as a revival into an injurable, killable body without the reanimation vessel’s eyes 415 416.
- Later passages call it an unstable Reanimation Jutsu-derived body with no physical body and infinite chakra 454 458.
- Tobirama subsequently states that Madara has lost infinite chakra but retains powerful self-repair 499.
- Orochimaru ultimately describes him as effectively fully revived and difficult to release; Madara must suppress his healing chakra to die from Hinata’s strike 539 540.
Cooking
- Spends half a year learning to cook, eventually earning praise from Feng An and Hinata 464.
- Studies ingredients to prepare for a cooking competition against Hinata 464.
- Invites Nagato and Konan to sample his food 465.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Uchiha Gunbai — Deflects Feng An’s kunai to protect Kabuto; Madara then discards it as cumbersome during their fight 403.
- Original Rinnegan — Recovers one eye from Feng An and retains it until death; it is left in his sealed grave 421 540.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Closest friend, rival, and central emotional attachment. Madara becomes openly jealous over him and ultimately chooses death to follow him to the Pure Land. Tsunade calls Madara her grandfather’s former lover, while Hashirama later insists that Mito Uzumaki is the person he loves most 458 499 539.
- Feng An — Opponent, rescuer, bargaining partner, and eventual friend. Feng An defeats him, exposes Black Zetsu’s scheme, houses him in Konoha, and arranges his burial 408 417 420 456 540.
- Hinata Hyuga — Feared for her Tenseigan’s destructive power; later a cooking rival. At Madara’s request, she delivers his fatal wound 454 456 464 540.
- Obito Uchiha — Manipulated proxy who operates under Madara’s name. Madara later condemns Obito’s participation in the Uchiha massacre and acknowledges responsibility for his descent 312 407 420.
- Black Zetsu — Supposed embodiment of Madara’s will, actually Kaguya’s agent. Their relationship turns into open combat after Madara accepts that he was deceived 408 418 451.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Reanimates and modifies Madara, but cannot fully control him. Madara initially protects Kabuto, then hunts him to repay Feng An 402 405 421 423.
- Nagato — Possesses Madara’s right Rinnegan and initially rejects Madara’s ownership claim. Madara later invites him to dinner in Konoha 411 418 465.
- Konan — Former opponent whom Madara nearly kills; she remains wary when they meet again, only for him to invite her to dinner 465.
- Tsunade — Recognizes him from her grandfather’s era and worries that his presence endangers Konoha. Later addresses him as “Grandpa Madara” 458 459 539.
- Tobirama Senju — Provokes Madara’s hostility; seeing Flying Thunder God reminds Madara of Tobirama and his own younger brother, Izuna 403.
