Background / History

Departure from Konoha

Orochimaru studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi and knew Tsunade from childhood. The deaths of his parents, Senju Nawaki, and Kato Dan strengthened his conviction that a finite lifespan prevented him from discovering the world’s true meaning 302 311 355.

His pursuit of immortality led to experiments involving infants and children. Although he later attributed some of this work to wartime Wood Release research conducted with Danzō and the village leadership’s approval, he continued experimenting after the research was prohibited. Hiruzen eventually expelled him from Konoha 302 321.

Akatsuki initially provided somewhere to stay after his departure. Orochimaru coveted Itachi Uchiha’s body, but Itachi defeated his attempt with a single glance. Orochimaru left the organization with its ring, prompting a period of pursuit. He founded Sound Village to secure a permanent base for his experiments 301 302 304 311.

Chunin Exam and Konoha Crush

During the Chunin Exam, Orochimaru attacked Naruto and Sasuke using a giant snake. He suppressed Naruto’s Nine-Tails power with the Five Elements Seal before turning his attention back to Sasuke 33 34.

Kanami intervened, severed Orochimaru’s tongue, and stole his Kusanagi Sword. Orochimaru avoided exposing his full strength because attracting Hiruzen’s attention would jeopardize his larger plan. He planted the Cursed Seal on Sasuke, survived decapitation and a stab through the heart by emerging from another body, and escaped 34.

Replacement Vessel

The damage inflicted by Hiruzen eventually left Orochimaru’s body bleeding, trembling, and near its limit. Although he wanted Sasuke as his next vessel, Kabuto warned that delaying reincarnation would cost him everything. Orochimaru transferred into a white-haired man instead 132.

Kimimaro, whose illness had made him unsuitable as a vessel, left his hospital equipment behind to retrieve a replacement for Orochimaru. He regarded the mission as repayment for Orochimaru’s kindness. Orochimaru later maintained that Kimimaro had acted voluntarily and expressed regret that he had been unable to save him 132 137 360.

Kanami’s Invitation

When Kanami visited Sound Village, Orochimaru regarded his combination of Hashirama cells, Wood Release, and Sharingan as the finest vessel he had ever encountered. He offered eternal life, but Kanami rejected the bargain and exposed the limitations of his body-transfer technique. Orochimaru consequently suspected that Kanami might himself be an older consciousness occupying a younger body 300 301 302.

Kanami instead invited him back to Konoha, offering a secure place to continue immortality research. Orochimaru doubted that an ordinary Genin could authorize his return and demanded to know what Kanami would gain. Kanami revealed that Akatsuki intended to recruit him for an invasion using Impure World Reincarnation 302 303.

Obito subsequently arrived under Madara Uchiha’s identity, confirming Kanami’s prediction. Orochimaru accepted an apparent alliance after Obito offered abundant experimental bodies and protection from Akatsuki’s retaliation. Privately, he doubted the masked man’s identity, noting that the historical Madara had not used Space-Time Ninjutsu 311 312.

Rather than report to Cloud Village, Orochimaru packed up his research and went to Konoha. He brought intelligence about the impending attack, leaving Obito to discover his emptied Sound Village laboratory 319 320 324.

Return to Konoha

Tsunade initially rejected Kanami’s proposal to pair Orochimaru with Katasuke because of his experiments on children. She eventually allowed his return on two conditions: he must abandon inhumane experiments and disclose every experiment to her. During their reconciliation, Orochimaru remembered Nawaki and apologized 321 322.

Kabuto reacted badly to the reunion. Obito had planned to deceive him with a disguised Black Zetsu, but mistook Orochimaru’s actual appearance for that performance. Orochimaru invited Kabuto to join him in Konoha; Kabuto instead stabbed him, panicked, and fled. Orochimaru removed the kunai and left the invitation open 356 357 358.

Orochimaru also brought Karin and Jugo to Konoha. Despite claiming that he no longer needed test subjects, he identified them as such at the gate and restrained them when Jugo resisted. By this point, Orochimaru held senior researcher status and permission to enter and leave the village 360 361.

Orochimaru places research above allegiance. He seeks secure laboratories, useful bodies, and freedom to investigate immortality, and readily negotiates with former enemies when those needs can be met. His decision to return to Konoha reflects those priorities rather than an unconditional attachment to the village 302 303 312 358.

He is suspicious of unexplained generosity. Kanami’s offer unsettles him until its strategic purpose becomes clear, and he challenges Obito’s claim to be Madara rather than accepting the name or a single Sharingan as proof 303 311 312.

His followers often treat him as the person who gave their lives meaning. He uses promises of purpose and usefulness to recruit vulnerable people, inspiring devotion strong enough for Kabuto and Kimimaro to offer their bodies or lives. Karin nevertheless distinguishes his cruelty from indiscriminate dishonesty, believing that he has principles 132 355 360 361 362.

His later conduct also shows attachment beneath his utilitarian language. He apologizes to Tsunade over memories of Nawaki, patiently tries to bring Kabuto into Konoha, and acknowledges grief over Kimimaro.
