Background and History

Tiger grew up as an orphan in Fish-Man Island’s Fish-Man District. After escaping enslavement by the Celestial Dragons, he returned to Mary Geoise and orchestrated a mass slave escape. At the port, he defended a stone pier that human escapees needed to board ships, then covered the retreat as government forces closed in 5 11 14.

He left Fish-Man Island as captain of the Sun Pirates rather than risk bringing the World Government’s pursuit upon its residents. At the crew’s departure, he established three rules: never kill, liberate slaves and rescue their people, and never betray companions. The crew adopted a red sun tattoo that concealed the Celestial Dragon brands borne by former slaves 12 13 14.

Tiger led operations against the Two-Headed Wolf slavers at Machu Picchu Island and the slave trade on Vila Island. During the fight against the Giant Axe Pirates’ slave network, he stayed behind in the City of Sighs to seek a way to free people bound to the Tree of Sighs, ordering Jinbe to lead the others out 17 25 53 80.

Later, Tiger took Koala, a traumatized human former slave, aboard the Sun Pirates’ ship. He marked her with the sun symbol over her Celestial Dragon brand and helped her express emotions she had suppressed. He saw in her a possible future of coexistence between humans and Fish-Men 117 118 119.

During a Marine siege at Barent Island, Kizaru gravely wounded Tiger. Tiger continued tearing through the chains blocking his crew’s escape; the subsequent report stated that most of the Sun Pirates escaped through a net he opened in his final moments. A newspaper then announced his execution 122 123.

Appearance

Tiger is a towering, burly red Fish-Man, substantially taller than Jinbe. He bears the Sun Pirates’ red sun tattoo on his chest 5 13 14.

Personality

Tiger’s hatred of humans is deep, but he refuses to let it dictate whom he rescues. Having seen human slaves as well as Celestial Dragons and slave traders, he makes liberation—not revenge—the Sun Pirates’ purpose. He maintains the crew’s no-killing rule as a boundary against losing that purpose 14 17 20.

He is protective of both his crew and Fish-Man Island. He avoids fights that would jeopardize a rescue, declines to expose his home to government retaliation, and initially rejects Sig’s risky plan to infiltrate slave hunters. His compassion does not always come easily in conversation: he acknowledges that Sig is better at comforting rescued crewmates 13 20 38 49.

Fish-Man Karate

Tiger uses Fish-Man Karate to direct powerful strikes through water and sea currents 10 45.

• Brutal Thrust — a synchronized strike with Jinbe that sends a Marine Vice Admiral into the sea 10.
