Background and History

Arlong grew up as an orphan in the Fish-Man District alongside Fisher Tiger and Jinbe. When Hachi brought the injured Sig there, Arlong initially believed he was human and objected to his presence. Learning of Sig's apparent mixed heritage did little to ease Arlong's hostility 11 12.

Arlong joined Tiger's Sun Pirates and took charge of underwater combat. He and Willy initially fought over the quartermaster position before Jinbe intervened. Despite Arlong's rivalry with other crewmates, he fought alongside them and followed Tiger's orders. On Water Seven, he restrained Kuroobi rather than risk exposing the crew after another pirate insulted Fish-Men enslaved at Mary Geoise 14 15 42.

His relationship with Sig changed during their voyages. Arlong followed Sig's lead while investigating a ghost ship and later worked under his direction in the search for kidnapped crewmates. When Sig was critically injured, Arlong sought treatment for him on Drum Island. During the battle in which Tiger died, Arlong knocked Sig unconscious to keep him from charging at Kizaru, then helped him escape 31 55 62 122.

After Tiger's death, Arlong fell out with Jinbe and left the Sun Pirates, taking Hachi and other close companions with him. He eventually established the Arlong Pirates in the East Blue, controlling Cocoyasi Village and surrounding settlements. His crew collected head taxes and bribed a local Marine officer. When Sig returned in 1512, he confronted Arlong over the villagers' treatment and argued that Arlong's years of oppression had weakened his resolve and Haki 124 461 464.

Appearance

Arlong is a large Fish-Man, described as roughly 2.3 meters tall 63.

• He has a fierce face and a serrated, saw-like nose 11 30.
• His teeth and nose saws can regenerate; he uses saws from his own body to make his blade 30.
• His fists are described as being the size of clay pots 11.

Personality

Arlong openly despises humans and initially calls Sig a “half-breed.” He nevertheless respects Fisher Tiger enough to curb his impulses when the crew's safety is at stake. He is protective of fellow Fish-Men, though that loyalty can turn into anger when he suspects betrayal 12 25 42 64.

He often expresses affection through insults, arguments, and fights. His concern for Sig becomes clearest when he searches for medical help and later saves him from the battle with Kizaru. In the East Blue, that protectiveness takes a harmful form: Arlong adopts Sig's son Lucas, spoils him, and encourages him to defy Nami and Bellemere 62 122 462 464.

Fish-Man Physiology and Life Return

Arlong favors the natural weapons of his sawshark body over Fish-Man Karate's water-based techniques. He cultivates Life Return to draw on that body's potential 30.

• His teeth and serrated nose regenerate rapidly 30.
• He can attack with his nose, using it as a spear and as a pivot for a spinning kick 59.

Armament Haki

Arlong can use Armament Haki Hardening on his serrated blade. His Haki later declines during his years in the East Blue; Sig attributes this to the conflict between Arlong's actions and Tiger's teachings 30 464.

Combat Judgment

Arlong is impulsive but can change tactics when an attack fails 31 42.

• Against regenerating monsters on a ghost ship, he decides to sink the vessel rather than continue fighting them aboard it 31.
• At Water Seven, he stops Kuroobi from starting a fight that could reveal the Sun Pirates' identities 42.

Relationships

• Fisher Tiger — former captain and fellow Fish-Man District orphan. Arlong deeply respects him and is devastated by his death 11 42 122.
• Jinbe — taught Arlong Fish-Man Karate and later led the Sun Pirates. Arlong left the crew after falling out with him over the direction it took following Tiger's death 16 124.
• Sig / Siegfried — former crewmate whom Arlong initially distrusted, later protected. Their closeness survives arguments over Arlong's conduct in the East Blue 12 122 464.
• Hachi — close crewmate who followed Arlong after the split from the Sun Pirates 124 125.
• Triton — Mermaid Arlong likes, though he has not openly admitted it to her. She disciplines him after hearing him belittle women to Lucas 462.
• Lucas — Sig and Bellemere's son, whom Arlong adopts and calls his own. Arlong's indulgence contributes to Lucas's unruly behavior 461 462.
• Bellemere — Lucas's mother. Arlong claims to protect her after learning she is pregnant, but she objects to his crew's actions and his treatment of Lucas 462.
