Background / History

A recording left by Gol D. Roger states that Shanks was one of two infants rescued by the Roger Pirates after the God Valley incident. Shanks was the child of a Celestial Dragon, while the other infant, Buggy, was the child of a slave. He grew up aboard Roger’s ship as an apprentice. 574

Shanks officially began his own captaincy four years before he disclosed his past to Sig. His early recruitment style was informal: he invited Yasopp to join simply after noticing Yasopp’s desire to sail. 129 159 By the time he encountered Sig in the East Blue, the Red-Hair Pirates were acclaimed as super rookies after defeating a Shichibukai, though Shanks was not yet an Emperor. 113 127

He recruited Sig after recognizing both his apparent Half Fish-Man heritage and unusual Observation Haki. Shanks accepted Sig’s stated intention to kill Borsalino, provided it would not turn him against his companions. 129 130 He later entrusted Sig with his history as Roger’s apprentice and invited him to help locate Laugh Tale through the four Coordinate Poneglyphs. 159

Appearance

At the time of his first meeting with Sig, Shanks was approximately 1.7 meters tall and appeared comparatively slight beside the much larger Half Fish-Man. 127 He can deliberately make himself inconspicuous, blending into the scavenger population of Goa’s Terminal of Uncertainties in a worn white shirt and with scruffy stubble. 141

  • Known publicly as “Red-Hair.”
  • Wields the sword Griffin. 564
  • Lost his left arm after deliberately holding back during his battle with Sig. 574
  • His sword possesses an unnamed Devil Fruit ability. 137

Personality

Shanks is outwardly carefree, sociable, and motivated by adventure, treasure hunting, and the enjoyment of piracy. He recruits people on personal instinct rather than through formal criteria, but respects companions who possess their own goals and boundaries. 129 130

Despite his casual manner, he is protective of his crew and capable of restraint. He prohibited Sig from using Observation Haki to pry into crewmates’ emotions, arguing that companions should build trust through mutual understanding rather than surveillance. 137 He also ordered a retreat from the laboratory when Aokiji’s arrival made the rescue of Sig untenable, prioritizing the survival of the crew over the objective. 513

Shanks can be politically naïve in his desire to help others, as shown by his support for An’er August’s reform movement in Goa. He later carried regret over An’er’s death and the failure of that effort. 142 190

Abilities & Skills

Fly-Fly Fruit

Shanks possesses the Fly-Fly Fruit, which allows instantaneous movement described as teleportation. 136

  • Used it to reach Foz’s warship with Beckman during the raid on Marine tribute ships. 136
  • His mobility initially surprised Sig, who had not known Shanks possessed a Devil Fruit ability. 136

Conqueror’s Haki

Shanks possesses exceptionally refined Conqueror’s Haki and is regarded as the strongest of the Four Emperors in this aspect. 141 564

  • Released a controlled burst to intimidate a guard in Goa without indiscriminately overwhelming the surrounding settlement. 141
  • Learned to block Sig’s Observation Haki and used that mastery to recognize when Sig was observing others. 137
  • Developed Conqueror’s Haki Entanglement while dueling Whitebeard. 246
  • Matched the pressure of Big Mom and Kaido simultaneously during the Four Emperors’ negotiations. 564
  • His clash with Whitebeard split the sky. 564

Swordsmanship

Shanks is an elite swordsman who was described as only half a move behind Mihawk at the time Sig joined the crew. 137

  • Fought Whitebeard directly during the Red-Hair and Whitebeard Pirates’ week-long conflict. 244 246
  • Confronted Mihawk during the Red-Hair Pirates’ assault on the Marine laboratory; their Conqueror’s Haki met head-on. 510
  • Uses Griffin in battle, including his sky-splitting clash with Whitebeard’s Cloud-Cutting Blade. 564

Leadership and Strategy

Shanks leads a comparatively small crew whose individual strength lets it compete with far larger Emperor crews. 531 545

  • Delegates major battlefield tasks to trusted officers, such as assigning Lucky Roo to spearhead the raid on Marine ships. 134
  • Uses the Red Force’s Seastone-fitted hull and oars to cross the Calm Belt while reducing the risk of Sea King attacks. 144
  • Negotiates when useful, including his deal with Moria for a Vivre Card fragment pointing toward Wano Country. 254
  • Avoids claiming broad territory; the islands under his flag are primarily protected rather than exploited. 531

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Griffin — Shanks’s sword. 564
  • Devil Fruit-empowered sword — Griffin is stated to possess an unnamed Devil Fruit ability. 137

Relationships

  • Sig / Siegfried — Recruited Sig into the Red-Hair Pirates after accepting his revenge-driven goal; later shared his Laugh Tale ambitions with him. Their bond collapsed after Sig learned of Shanks’s World Government connection and severed Shanks’s left arm. 129 130 159 574
  • Benn Beckman — First mate and Shanks’s practical counterbalance; Beckman provides the caution and authority that Shanks’s easygoing leadership often lacks. 134 140
  • Lucky Roo — Quartermaster and longtime core crewmate. Shanks trusts him with leading assaults and sends him on sensitive missions with Sig. 134 160
  • Yasopp — Shanks’s first recruited crewmate and the crew’s sniper. 129 137
  • Gol D. Roger — Former captain and mentor figure. Shanks inherited Roger’s straw hat and carries forward the goal of reaching Laugh Tale. 159 192
  • Buggy — Fellow Roger Pirates apprentice and the other infant rescued after God Valley. Shanks once stayed behind with Buggy rather than proceed to Laugh Tale when Buggy fell ill. 129 574
  • Monkey D. Luffy — A child Shanks befriended in Foosha Village; Shanks entrusted Roger’s straw hat to him and told him to return it after becoming a great pirate. 139 192
  • Edward Newgate / Whitebeard — Rival captain with mutual respect. Their crews fought for a week, while Shanks and Whitebeard repeatedly clashed over pride, territory, and piracy. 244 247 564
  • Dracule Mihawk — A swordsman treated as Shanks’s equal in strength; Mihawk directly opposed Shanks during the attempt to recover Sig from the Marines. 137 510
  • An’er August — Goa noble and reformer whom Shanks supported against King Peter’s regime; An’er’s later death left Shanks regretful and conflicted. 142 190

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment of Sig and the Goa Incident

Shanks recruited Sig in the East Blue, then brought him into the Red-Hair Pirates despite Sig’s revenge against Borsalino and his unusual abilities. 129 130 In Goa, Shanks was sent by a Marine hero to mediate internal strife and chose to support An’er August’s effort to share resources with commoners and refugees. 141 142

He remained in Foosha Village for an extended period, befriended Luffy, endured public humiliation by Higuma’s bandits without retaliating, and eventually left Luffy Roger’s straw hat. 190 192

Search for Laugh Tale

Shanks disclosed his Roger Pirates past to Sig and explained Roger’s ability to hear the voices of significant objects, including Poneglyphs. He sought Sig’s help to gather the four Coordinate Poneglyphs and reach Laugh Tale. 159

His pursuit took the crew through Sky Island, Fish-Man Island, the New World, Thriller Bark, Wano-related investigations, and Zou. 196 215 251 254 406

Red-Hair and Whitebeard Conflict

After the Red-Hair Pirates entered the New World, Shanks accepted Whitebeard’s challenge rather than retreat. Their captains fought directly, while their crews conducted paired duels over the course of a week. 244 246 247

The conflict ended with Shanks offering the crew’s treasure as an apology and Whitebeard extending an invitation to his New Year banquet. The public outcome also elevated the Red-Hair Pirates from “newcomers” to a crew other major powers had to recognize. 247

Elbaf and the Four Emperors

Shanks helped Lola escape a forced political marriage, then entered Elbaf to explain himself and was initially declared wanted by Prince Roki. After rescuing Roki from the Adam Tree fire, he and his crew became honored guests of the Giant Kingdom. 314

He later established the Red-Hair Pirates as the fourth Emperor crew despite maintaining fewer members and less territory than his rivals. 531 Shanks initiated negotiations among the Four Emperors to divide New World territories and pursue exploration without interference. 564 568

Attempt to Recover Sig and the Break

When the Marines held Sig in a laboratory, Shanks personally led a Red-Hair Pirates assault to retrieve him. Aokiji’s arrival forced Shanks to order a retreat, though he warned Vegapunk not to harm his comrade. 510 513

After Sig uncovered Shanks’s Celestial Dragon origin and continuing ties to the World Government, the two fought. Shanks withheld an explanation and intentionally stopped at the clash’s peak, allowing Sig to cut off his left arm. The public framed the event as Sig’s defection from the Red-Hair Pirates. 574 575
