Background / History
Sky belongs to the Starcrest Family, an old and powerful noble house guarding the Empire’s northwestern border against the lich tyrant of the Immortal Fortress. Her father is Duke Starcrest, and she is one of the family’s few heirs. At five, she was taken to the Final Fortress, where she witnessed her elders resisting the undead calamity 471 484 494.
Her expected future was to become a paladin, inherit her title, and fight on the northern front. Sky instead became convinced that corruption inside the Empire threatened its survival as surely as enemies outside its borders. She joined the Imperial Tribunal against her family’s wishes, exchanging plate armor and a greatsword for a gray uniform, hand crossbow, and shortsword 471 494.
She pursued cultists and demon worshippers through sewers, slept among corpses, and once followed a lead for three days and nights without sleep. Although she regarded this work as proof of her independence, her family continued pressuring the Inquisition to protect her and send her home 484 494.
Appearance
- Hair: Long and silver, usually tied into a neat ponytail 455 466.
- Eyes: Silver 473.
- Uniform: Fitted gray office attire with silver buttons running from collar to waist 466.
- Bearing: Exceptionally straight posture, stiff movements, and meticulous grooming 466 480.
- Field equipment: Two hand crossbows at her waist, a bolt case strapped to her outer thigh, and a shortsword across her back 473.
- Improvised disguises: Sunglasses and an exaggerated dwarf mask during her Sewer Market activities 487 489.
Personality
Sky is earnest, compassionate, and strongly committed to evidence and fairness. She defines justice as protecting innocent people and giving them hope rather than simply killing evil creatures. Calderon considers these qualities admirable in a paladin but dangerous for an inquisitor, whose work he believes demands ruthlessness 457 466.
Her devotion to order extends into ordinary life: she evaluates tea against standards, chooses nutritionally certified meals, and considers a museum of law an appropriate sightseeing destination. She admits that she struggles to interact with people, while colleagues describe her as distant and so absorbed in work that she spends days off at the office 467 471.
Sky’s rigidity does not prevent her from reconsidering a judgment. She apologizes after examining Celia’s balanced aura, thanks Xia Lin for saving her squad, and gradually becomes more comfortable fighting beside his companions. Their unconventional tactics repeatedly surprise her, but she recognizes them as teammates 455 466 474 475.
Learning that her superiors prioritized appeasing her family over respecting her ambitions leaves her feeling unwanted and humiliated. Xia Lin persuades her that independence need not mean surrendering every resource available to her. By Chapter 495, she is willing to falsify the attribution of a mission and cultivate a covert support network, despite still considering such deception dishonorable 484 488 494 495.
Abilities & Skills
Precision Ranged Combat
Sky’s Evilbane Eye variant specializes in ranged attacks 473.
- Possesses Precision Shot, Rapid Shot, and Evilbane Arrow 473.
- Pins a giant man-eating flower’s attacking vine with a divine crossbow bolt, saving Sera 474.
- Strikes cultists’ vital points accurately and fires three consecutive bolts at close range during the sewer battle 492.
- Her hand crossbow forms a new magical bolt after each shot, eliminating manual reloading 475.
Judgment Gaze
A gaze-based attack that releases golden light and delivers an invisible mental shock 478.
- Interrupts an Aberrant Treant preparing Discordant Prelude, a fifth-circle sonic spell that would drive creatures against their allies 478.
- Sky repeatedly disrupts the treant’s spellcasting during the battle 478.
Supernatural Detection
Sky can distinguish several forms of supernatural influence, though detecting an aura does not automatically establish its source or moral nature 466 469 490.
- Uses Detect Evil to determine that Ruiwen has no evil aura despite her powerful chaotic presence 490.
- Detects Celia’s faint Abyssal aura and a later, momentary succubus aura 466 475.
- Identifies grief, rage, and despair lingering at Rence Manor as emotional residue rather than ordinary Abyssal or undead corruption 469.
- Recognizes that the greenhouse’s chaotic energy follows an unusual pattern resembling life activity 478.
- Her squad’s detection Divine Arts fail to penetrate the Glory Day blood-sacrifice array 470.
Eye of Reversal
Sky knows a rare secret technique for using the Inquisition’s Eye of Reversal to reconstruct past events from supernatural traces. Her unnamed master taught her the technique 469.
- Requires sufficient magical or mental residue at the scene 469.
- Recreates a rough picture of past events; users are observers, not participants 469 470.
- Reveals the Rence family’s murders, Molena’s pact, and the apparent survival of a possessed adventurer 469.
- Demands exceptional concentration and magical sensitivity 469.
- Leaves Sky physically weakened; the final reconstruction nearly causes a mental breakdown 470.
Divine Protection and Treatment
Sky uses order-aligned divine abilities and carries supplies for emergency treatment 475 491 493.
- Touch of Order: Removes the nausea and dizziness caused by Xia Lin’s mandrake poisoning 475.
- Protection from Alignment: Casts it on herself before confronting the sewer cultists 491.
- First aid: Recognizes the dangers of a barbed spider-leg wound and attempts to purify and heal Ruiwen with concentrated holy water 493.
- Limits: Although unaffected by the first crimson spell during the Glory Day ambush, she is overwhelmed by Pazuzu’s subsequent invoked power. A high-tier charm aura later makes her lose consciousness in the greenhouse 454 479 480.
Investigation and Fieldcraft
- Registers Xia Lin as a temporary consultant and obtains archived records for the Rence family case 468.
- Finds overlooked clues concerning the family’s changed faith and servants’ reports of unusual activity 468.
- Produces a behavioral assessment distinguishing Xia Lin’s secrecy from evidence of malicious intent 470.
- Performs an aerial scissor throw that knocks out a heavier gang member in under three seconds 487.
- Pilots the Windchaser between Imperial highway nodes 473 483.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Two hand crossbows — Her principal field weapons; at least one generates magical bolts automatically 473 475.
- Shortsword — Carried across her back as a secondary weapon 473.
- Purifying Flame Eye — An Inquisition holy relic used to examine Celia’s supernatural aura 466.
- Eye of Reversal — A silver pocket watch without hands, displaying rotating runes; used for reconstructing residual impressions of past events 469.
- Leather armor, holy symbol, and Evilbane Eye badge — Worn during field operations 480 491.
- Space Bag — Carries equipment and documents, including evidence recovered from the cultists 480 495.
- Concentrated holy water — Carried for purification and treatment 493.
- Windchaser — Inquisition transport she pilots. The mithril-alloy vessel reaches 120 li per hour but must follow magical nodes along Imperial highways rather than fly freely 473.
- Sunglasses and dwarf mask — Used to conceal her identity in the sewers; she justifies the mask through the Infiltration and Disguise Manual 487 489.
Relationships
- Xia Lin · Tolemo — Savior, surveillance target, investigative partner, and teammate. He helps her confront her family’s control and devises the approach behind her covert strategy. Colleagues speculate that they are dating, but Sky identifies their outings as investigative work 455 467 470 471 494 495.
- Grand Inquisitor Calderon — Superior who assigns her to investigate Xia Lin. His disclosure that protecting her from danger and family pressure takes precedence over her ambitions shatters her trust in him 457 471 484.
- Duke Starcrest — Father whose pressure restricts her assignments. Sky resists returning home to fulfill the family’s expectations 471 484 495.
- Mina — Trusted colleague first met during a joint operation three years earlier. Agrees to claim Sky’s mission credit and secretly provide resources and intelligence as she advances 495.
- Celia — Initially suspected because of her Abyssal aura. They bond over justice and redemption; Celia later protects Sky from a mutated plant 466 475.
- Kade — Fellow servant of Iomedae. Sky promises to help rescue his mother and later accepts his intervention against arresting her 473 481.
- Seraphina Phillip — Subject of Sky’s attempted arrest after the Botanical Garden disaster. Seraphina’s teasing intensifies Sky’s embarrassment over the charm incident 480 481.
- Sera — Battlefield companion whom Sky saves from a vine attack; frequently teases Sky about Xia Lin 474 480 483.
- Ruiwen — Temporary ally against Pazuzu’s cultists. Sky detects her chaotic aura and tries to treat her injury, only to encounter her rejection of holy water 490 492 493.
- Priest Jerrik — Member of her Glory Day squad who addresses her as captain. Sky wakes him to help raise the alarm after the ambush 455.
- Levi — Fellow inquisitor who questions the suitability of her surveillance assignment and later expresses concern that she may leave the Inquisition 471 484.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Glory Day Ambush
Sky initially accuses Xia Lin of disrupting an Inquisition sting. The operation proves to be a cult trap involving a compromised informant and a hidden blood-sacrifice formation. Xia Lin protects her, defeats the war priest, and gives her a map of seven cult teams deployed across the city. She apologizes, acknowledges her debt, and alerts her colleagues 453 454 455.
Calderon subsequently orders her to exploit that debt to investigate Xia Lin’s origins, abilities, and unusual perception. Sky accepts despite objecting to the method 457.
Surveillance and the Silent Duchess Case
Sky’s attempt to approach Xia Lin under the guise of gratitude is conspicuously awkward, and she soon admits her assignment directly. What begins as a tour of Nirose becomes a joint investigation when Xia Lin mentions the unsolved Rence family massacre 466 467.
Using archival clues and the Eye of Reversal, they uncover Molena’s revenge pact and evidence that an otherworldly entity possessed the adventurers’ leader. Sky reports a potentially Mythic-grade threat, while Calderon again directs her attention toward Xia Lin’s secrets 468 469 470.
Royal Botanical Garden
Sky accompanies Xia Lin’s party to rescue Seraphina, providing transport, ranged support, toxin treatment, and spell interruption. The greenhouse’s charm aura overwhelms her, and Xia Lin carries her back to Green Leaf Town 473 474 475 478 479 480.
After recovering, she attempts to arrest Seraphina for the disaster but agrees to submit a report instead. During dinner, she discovers that Calderon withheld Xia Lin’s role in saving New Stefan, prompting her confrontation with him after their return 481 483 484.
Sewer Operation and Covert Independence
While attempting to act as an adventurer, Sky exposes cheating at a rat race and nearly provokes a fight with Mad Rat. Xia Lin resolves the confrontation, but his suggestion that she leave the sewers triggers a breakdown over feeling rejected everywhere 487 488.
She subsequently joins Xia Lin and Ruiwen in attacking a Pazuzu cult camp. Afterward, she plans to resign, believing her career has been undermined by family interference. Xia Lin persuades her to remain and pursue independence through concealed action rather than open surrender 490 491 492 493 494.
Sky puts this advice into practice by arranging for Mina to receive credit for the sewer operation. Mina is to gain rank and access while secretly supporting Sky’s continued missions and growth; Sky supplies evidence, drafts the cover report, and provides money for Mina’s equipment and training 495.
Notable Quotes

“Teammates help each other. It’s only natural.” 475
“In public, I’ll pretend to be a harmless young lady while actually growing stronger in secret.” 495
Trivia
- Service-length inconsistency: Sky says she joined at eighteen and has served five years when introducing herself as twenty-three. Later conversations repeatedly describe eight years of service; the supplied passages do not resolve the discrepancy 467 484 494.
- Reports that she smiled after winning a rat-racing bet spread rapidly through the Inquisition, reinforcing rumors about her relationship with Xia Lin 471.
