Background

Sera is a Tiefling whose fiend-touched appearance has subjected her to fear and prejudice. She became guarded, suspicious, and sharp-tongued, expecting others to see her as something monstrous before they know her. 30

While saving Russ from an Imp's mental prison, Sera tells him about a horned and tailed orphan girl who accepted a mysterious voice's offer of power, used it to retaliate against those who harmed her, and found that the power had only built “a more magnificent, and even colder, cage.” When Russ asks whether the girl was her, Sera does not answer directly. 114 She later admits that she regrets agreeing to that voice. 118

Her pact binds her to an unfathomable entity she calls the Sovereign. She fears its growing influence but continues studying its power and other Warlocks connected to it, hoping to eventually uncover a path to freedom. 57 252 285

During Orpis's Star Bridge trial, Sera faces the conflict between her own choices and the void-corrupted source of her power. She ultimately claims that the worth of a flower “raised on poison” belongs to the flower's choices and will, rather than the poison that nourished it. 387 Following the trial, she receives a Mythic Baptism that reinforces her mental defenses and resistance to external interference. 390

Appearance

Sera usually conceals herself beneath dark robes, a hood, and a veil. Her Tiefling features are striking when exposed: pale-purple skin, curved black horns, flame-like eyes, and a purple tail. 24 36 37

  • Pale-purple skin and faint black goat-like horns. 24
  • Dark red, flame-like pupils; later described with violet eyes. 24 380
  • A purple tail that often betrays irritation, embarrassment, or tension despite her controlled manner. 36 37 121
  • Prefers dark robes and a veil; later receives and keeps a blue Scholar's Robe for combat. 36 116
  • Possesses a tall, voluptuous build beneath her usual concealing clothing. 183
  • Can disguise herself convincingly enough to infiltrate Madam Anlin's Floating Castle as an unremarkable maid named Sally. 298
  • At the Tsaros border, magical screening detects strong otherworldly energy and a chaotic aura surrounding her. 436

Personality

Sera is sarcastic, observant, and difficult to read. Her usual response to danger, sentimentality, or social discomfort is a cutting remark, and she is reluctant to disclose anything about her pact or past. 30 31 54 She is practical about money and survival, but is not indifferent to suffering—particularly when it concerns other Tieflings. 55 108

Her colder façade gives way in moments of genuine vulnerability. She risks her own will to enter Russ's mind, recognizes his pain from personal experience, and helps him reject the Imp's manipulation. 113 114 She is disturbed rather than pleased when the Sovereign rewards her compassion with more power. 116

In battle, Sera is calculating and adaptive. She uses decoys, positioning, poison, terrain, and precise spell timing rather than relying solely on raw magical force. 164 169 301

Though deeply distrustful of institutions and strangers, Sera increasingly recognizes the value of companionship and freely chosen trust. She rejects Marco Sadun's belief that exchanging one master for another constitutes freedom, declaring that she has companions with whom to pursue the Sovereign's truth. 285 Her eventual willingness to combine her shadow magic with Kade's divine power reflects the growth of that trust. 416 417

Abilities & Skills

Pact Magic

Sera derives her magic from a pact with the Sovereign, an otherworldly entity whose will can intrude upon or even act through her. 1 195

  • Casts warlock spells through Charisma; her original spell save DC was 14 and spell attack modifier was +6. 1
  • Known early spells include Hex and Dissonant Whispers; later additions include Darkness, Misty Step, Hypnotic Pattern, and Armor of Agathys. 1 117 205
  • Her power can intensify when her patron's influence is stronger, such as within the unfinished divine kingdom. 347
  • The Sovereign's influence is dangerous: it can seize control of her body and project an alien, impersonal will into others' minds. 195
  • After Xia Lin's mythic awakening, she senses a new buffer between herself and her patron, leaving the Sovereign quieter without removing its power. 356
  • Following the Star Bridge trial, she receives Bulwark of Will, a Mythic Baptism that sharpens her perception and permanently strengthens her resistance to external mental interference. 390
  • After debating the Sovereign for a week in the spiritual world, she reaches a compromise that grants her greater authority while requiring her to continue bringing it interesting experiences. 409

Eldritch Blast

Sera's signature attack is a condensed purplish-black beam of shadow energy. It is her primary long-range weapon and can pierce flesh, cripple incorporeal enemies, and force opponents out of position. 24 41 43

  • Repulsion Blast adds forceful knockback, allowing her to control enemy movement and maintain distance. 58 186
  • Agonizing Blast enhances its damage output. 117 164
  • At Warlock Lv. 5, she can fire two beams in a single casting. 205 209
  • Spellbreaking Eldritch Blast can temporarily break through magical resistance; she uses it to destroy a golem's core. 301
  • Her Scholar's Robe adds +1d6 damage to her first-ring spells and cantrips. 116
  • Her Novice's Gloves increase every damage die of her cantrips and first-circle spells by 1, further improving Eldritch Blast's repeated damage. 432

Telepathy and Mental Arts

Sera can directly communicate with creatures she sees, bypassing language barriers if the target understands at least one language. 1

  • Initially limited to creatures within 30 feet. 1
  • Maintains a Mental Link with Xia Lin and later includes Kade, enabling rapid tactical coordination. 43 147
  • Can resist some mental interference and identify hostile magical presences, though she was overwhelmed inside Sika Skullspeaker's ancestral mental domain. 75
  • Used the Obsidian Shard and the Sovereign's Will to collapse Sika's mental world from within. 78
  • Entered Russ's mind to retrieve his stolen soul and confront the Imp manipulating him. 113 114
  • Uses a spell from the Sovereign's diary to send Xia Lin through a prisoner's memories. 261
  • Developed Soul Manifestation, a ritual that draws out and reveals a subject's soul essence. 380
  • Successfully withstands a direct spiritual clash with the Sovereign during Orpis's trial, preserving her identity and autonomy. 387
  • Her Mythic Baptism reinforces her mental barrier against fear, despair, and intrusive external influences. 390

Illusion, Mobility, and Control

Sera supplements her ranged offense with deception and battlefield control magic.

  • Uses Minor Illusion to create convincing decoys, including one that absorbs an assassin's opening strike. 169
  • Uses Misty Step for emergency repositioning, escape, and aggressive flanking. 167 169 284
  • Uses Abyssal Grasp to restrain targets with giant shadow claws; it can hold even a transforming dragon long enough for allies to capitalize. 301 313
  • Analyzed and reversed a second-circle Suggestion Spell array, causing the Harpies affected by it to flee. 128 130
  • Used Dissonant Whispers against Paladin Guram, though it failed to incapacitate him. 107
  • Uses Darkness and Abyssal Grasp to control the battlefield during the confrontation with Jezelda's cult. 238
  • At Lv. 8, gains Shadow Touch, a fourth-circle spell that summons shadowy tentacles to bind enemies and drain their life force. 409
  • Combines a field of shadowy silence with Kade's positive-energy purification ritual, temporarily severing a Mythic Curse's external perception. 416 417

Rituals and Familiar

At Lv. 5, Sera gains Detect Magic and Find Familiar. 205

  • Her familiar, the Abyssal Pseudodragon Little Shadow, accompanies her on missions and can assist with scouting, distractions, and poison smoke. 210 301
  • She can communicate with animals through Animal Conversation, using catnip essential oil to gain Snowball's cooperation and locate Martha. 299
  • She regularly studies ritual components, magical arrays, and the Sovereign's diary. 58 93 130
  • Uses Detect Magic to expose Shilana as a Drow concealing her identity through illusion magic. 301
  • Creates Soul Manifestation by refining the memory-traversal spell from the Sovereign's diary into a ritual capable of revealing a soul's essence. 380

Equipment

  • Scholar's Robe — Fine robe that grants +1d6 damage to first-ring spells and cantrips. 116
  • Thousand Faces Cantrip Ring — Ring used to enhance and quicken spellcasting; also assists Sera's disguises. 53 164
  • Obsidian Shard — Warlock focus acquired after Ras Vane's disappearance; used in her mental battle against Sika Skullspeaker. 57 58 78
  • Ras Vane's diary — A record of dangerous secrets concerning the Sovereign and other Warlocks; Sera studies and guards it closely. 57 93 362
  • Fine Dagger — Her listed close-range weapon. 58
  • Medical Box — Supplies used to provide Xia Lin with a healing potion for Felicity. 257
  • Little Shadow — Abyssal Pseudodragon familiar. 205 210
  • Novice's Gloves — Gloves given to her by Xia Lin that add 1 damage to each damage die of her cantrips and first-circle spells. 432

Relationships

  • Xia Lin — Her primary adventuring partner. Their relationship begins with mutual suspicion after the battlefield at Orlando, develops through shared quests and telepathic coordination, and becomes a partnership in which Sera is willing to reveal vulnerability. 30 43 58 116 Xia Lin's trust becomes central to Sera's resolve during Orpis's trial, and he catches her when the spiritual confrontation nearly overwhelms her. 387
  • Kade — Paladin ally. Sera finds his divine aura uncomfortable and irritating, but accepts his reliability in battle; Kade swears a Sacred Oath to protect her during the Harpy altar crisis. 123 130 Their ideological conflict develops into mutual trust, culminating in their combined light-and-shadow ritual to lift Sirian and Linor's Mythic Curse. 416 417
  • Russ — Young Tiefling she protects in Luoye Town. Sera enters his mind to recover his soul, helps him face his jealousy, and admits her own regret over accepting her pact. 113 114 118
  • The Sovereign — Her patron and the source of her warlock magic. Sera resents its control and openly wishes to kill it, but continues pursuing its secrets in search of a way out. 76 252 285 After reaching Lv. 8, she establishes a precarious compromise with it through a prolonged spiritual debate rather than outright submission. 409
  • Ras Vane — A paranoid Warlock connected to the same Sovereign. His apparent self-destruction gives Sera the essence that advances her to Lv. 2. 57 58
  • Marco Sadun — A fellow Warlock who attempts to escape the Sovereign through Dahak's power. His fate reinforces Sera's belief that exchanging one master for another is not freedom. 283 285
  • Lily — Initially her opponent in the Deadfire Arena, later an ally. Sera questions why Lily spared her after defeating her, and the two gradually form mutual respect. 169 176 183
  • Little Shadow — Her Abyssal Pseudodragon familiar and constant companion. 210 252
  • Celia/Soteria — A succubus-human soul fusion whose struggle between demonic instinct and compassion evokes Sera's own relationship with corrupting power. Celia openly trusts and admires Sera, calling her “Sister Sera” after witnessing her resistance to the Sovereign. 379 387 The two later investigate Lenore together and support one another in the field. 413
  • Orpis — The Watcher who tests Sera at Star Bridge. He intervenes when the Sovereign attempts to erase her selfhood, then accepts her answer regarding ownership of her power and declares that she has passed. 387
  • Tristan — Inquisitor and temporary ally during the Baras Town investigation. Sera challenges his rigid assumptions about demonic evil through the Soul Manifestation ritual performed on Soteria. 366 380
  • Martha Winters — Head maid and ally during the Floating Castle operation. Sera infiltrates the castle to contact her, and the two coordinate an internal rebellion against Madam Anlin. 300 302
  • Lenore and Sirian — Sera initially approaches the vampirekin bard Lenore with caution, then works alongside Kade to free Lenore and Sirian from their Mythic Curse, enabling their reconciliation. 413 417

Despite an initially hostile exchange, the two bury the dead, divide the spoils, and travel toward Orlando together. 30 31

The Old Graveyard and Ras Vane

Sera and Xia Lin investigate the old graveyard and its underground tomb, where her Eldritch Blast, magical senses, telepathy, and ability to unlock a rune-sealed gate make her essential to the expedition. 41 42 43 After meeting Ras Vane, she absorbs part of his essence and formally agrees to remain Xia Lin's partner until her personal affairs are resolved. 57 58

Orc War and Luoye Town

During the Orc conflict, Sera is pulled into Sika Skullspeaker's mental domain and ultimately destroys it by leaving an imprint of the Sovereign's Will within the shaman's mind. 75 78 In Luoye Town, prejudice against Tieflings draws her into Russ and Kyle's crisis; she saves Russ's soul from an Imp and confronts the regret underlying her own pact. 107 113 114

Brevor Alliance and the Deadfire Arena

Sera helps break the Harpies' control over captive miners by reversing a magical suggestion array. 127 128 130 In the Deadfire Arena, she defeats the magic-resistant Faceless One through poison, Repulsion Blast, quickened Eldritch Blasts, and precise timing. 164 She later defeats Little Ding with a final empowered blast but is severely wounded by the Red-robed Priestess. 169

New Stefan and the Sovereign's Warlocks

In New Stefan, Sera investigates memories, researches the Sovereign's diary, and receives a revelation concerning another Warlock of her origin. 252 261 She battles Marco Sadun, a Warlock who has replaced the Sovereign's pact with Dahak's bloodline, then uses his dragon-scale necklace to briefly feel relief from the Sovereign's pressure. 283 285

Soteria's Judgment

While investigating the succubus Celia/Soteria in Baras Town, Sera identifies Abyssal traces and helps capture the demon. 366 372 She later proposes and performs Soul Manifestation, revealing Soteria's soul as a mixture of succubus nature, human kindness, and divine influence. 380

Star Bridge Trial

At Star Bridge, Sera volunteers to undergo Orpis's trial and faces a direct spiritual assault from the Sovereign. 387 She refuses to define herself as either the Sovereign's corruption or its gift, asserting that the value of her growth belongs to her own will and choices. 387 Her success earns her a Mythic Baptism that reinforces her will against fear, despair, and mental interference. 390

Journey to the Tsaros Empire

After leaving Silver Oak City, Sera spends a week debating the Sovereign in the spiritual world and emerges as a Lv. 8 Warlock with Shadow Touch. 409 She continues travelling with Xia Lin, Kade, and Celia toward the Tsaros Empire, where her otherworldly aura attracts immediate scrutiny at the border. Kade publicly vouches for her character and conduct. 436

Lenore's Curse

Sera and Celia track the vampirekin bard Lenore and learn of her conflict with Sirian, a werewolf compelled to hunt her. 413 Sera devises a ritual combining her shadow magic with Kade's purification power, requiring both of them to trust that neither darkness nor divine light will consume the other. 416 Their united ritual removes the Mythic Curse, restores Lenore and Sirian's memories, and allows them to reconcile. 417
