Background / History

Laozi originally cultivated alongside Yuanshi and Tongtian on Kunlun Mountain. Of the three brothers, he was the eldest and most restrained; when disturbances arose from the Blood Sea, he simply agreed with Yuanshi's judgment and returned to meditation. 3

At Hongjun's second sermon in Purple Cloud Palace, Laozi became the first attendee to sever a corpse through the Three Corpses Severing Method. He used the Taiyi Whisk to create Supreme Old Lord, then later used the Eight Sceneries Palace Lantern to sever his Evil Corpse and reach mid-stage Quasi-Sage. His advancement established him as the strongest of the attending great powers until Styx's return overshadowed him. 24

Yuanshi's earlier Sagehood deprived Laozi of being the first to establish a sect. Impatient to avoid falling behind his brothers, Laozi established the Dao Sect rather than returning to the Human Race to form the Human Sect he had originally sensed. He invoked both the Heavenly Dao and Earthly Dao, compelling the Heavenly Dao to acknowledge his sect and grant him Merit. 74

Appearance

Laozi is presented as an elderly Daoist. Human children at the Human Race Ancestral Land mistook him for an ordinary old man, while his Three Purities technique produces a white-haired incarnation resembling him. 100 203

Personality

Laozi is typically detached and measured. He often speaks little, maintained composure when Yuanshi began challenging his authority, and later attempted to mediate the escalating disputes between Yuanshi and Tongtian. 3 76 128

Beneath this restraint, he is proud of his standing as eldest of the Three Pure Ones. He refused Yuanshi and Tongtian's aid against Styx because relying on them would undermine his self-image as Pangu's foremost heir. Yuanshi becoming a Sage first also drove Laozi to establish the Dao Sect in haste. 37 74

He is a patient schemer who values preparation, leverage, and plausible deniability. He recruited Kunpeng by exploiting his resentment, used the Rakshasi and Ox Demon to destabilize Great Shang and provoke conflict between Buddhism and the Asura Sect, and remained alert to Styx's suspected infiltrators. 131 132 227 229
