Background / History
Formerly the Ancestral Witch Hou Tu, she establishes Pingxin Palace after taking responsibility for the Netherworld. Declaring that “there will be no Ancestral Witch Hou Tu” thereafter, she adopts the name Pingxin and commits to treating all beings without prejudice, including the Demon Clan. She appoints Styx as Netherworld Great Emperor and accepts Witch Clan personnel to help operate the newly founded Underworld. 69
As an Earthly Dao Sage, Pingxin guards the Netherworld’s independence against the Heavenly Dao Sages. When they demand to search her realm during the investigation into Kunpeng’s disappearance, she denounces the request as an attempt to claim the Netherworld and has them expelled after Kunpeng reappears elsewhere. 84
Her position as protector of the Witch Clan brings her into conflict with the Demon Clan and the Western Sect during the Golden Crow incident. Furious that the Witch Clan was made to bear the consequences of others’ schemes, she injures Di Jun and Zhun Ti, orders Hou Yi to punish the invaders, and summons Heavenly Lightning against the ten Golden Crows. The Heavenly Dao Sages suppress her Earthly Dao power before she can escalate the confrontation further. 96 97 98
Pingxin later turns Zhun Ti’s greed to the Netherworld’s advantage. She proposes that his Good Corpse guard the Bridge of Helplessness, then severs its connection to Zhun Ti with Earthly Dao power. The Good Corpse becomes Meng Po, leaving Zhun Ti unable to recover it or complete the Three Corpses Severing Method. 99 100 103
Appearance
Pingxin usually appears as an ethereal immortal maiden rather than in a fearsome divine form. While traveling among humans, she and Styx maintain the appearance of youthful Heavenly Immortals. 118 135 140
- Often wears flowing white robes. 121
- Has sharp phoenix eyes. 136
- Her apparent age remains that of a woman in her early twenties despite her ancient origins. 140
Personality
Pingxin is dignified, decisive, and intensely protective of the Netherworld and the Witch Clan. She refuses to allow outside powers to interfere with her domain, and her anger becomes especially dangerous when she believes the Witch Clan has been unfairly targeted. 84 96 97 125
Behind this formidable public image, she carries the exhaustion of serving as the Witch Clan’s guardian and feels unable to show weakness before rival Sages. Styx’s concern allows her to lower that facade in private. 100
Living in the Dongyi Tribe reveals a much gentler and more playful side. She eagerly joins children’s games, forms friendships with the tribe, and gradually develops a deeper understanding of human emotion, fleeting time, and companionship. 135 136
