Background / History
Formation and Former Dominance
The alliance established human settlements in territory previously controlled entirely by the Endless Sea Aquatic Clans. Through military strength, it secured nine continents and more than a dozen great cities for the Human Race 1102.
Each sect occupied one of nine Dao Fusion Lands and ruled a continent. Gao Tongwei described these inheritances as protected by nine Dao-Fused Tribulation-Crossing Pseudo-Immortals, with almost uninterrupted succession outside the Tianyan Sect 961.
At its historical height, the alliance possessed eleven Tribulation-Crossing Pseudo-Immortals. Tianyan Sect supplied its founder, Tiansuanzi, and two vice sect masters who had each survived five Heavenly Tribulations; the other eight sects supplied another eight powerhouses. Tiansuanzi himself had survived eight tribulations and stood one step from ascension 1206 1327.
Qin Yezhou and the Immortal’s Retaliation
According to Qi Zhentian’s recollection, Qin Yezhou once enjoyed the support of both the Nine Sons and the East Sea Dragon Palace. The East Sea Dragon Emperor arranged his relationship with an adopted Fairy Maiden in hopes of securing peace, and their union brought a long period of prosperity 1312.
Qin later attempted to take the Fairy away from the Endless Sea against her wishes. This enraged the Immortal stationed there by the Immortal Court, who destroyed Tianyan Sect’s experts and drove the Nine Sons into prolonged dormancy 1312.
The eight surviving alliance sects withdrew from affairs beyond the Southern Endless Sea. The destruction also shattered the existing peace between cultivators and demons, allowing stronger factions to absorb weaker ones and demons to prey on human sects 1327.
Isolation and Tianyan Sect’s Return
For more than a hundred thousand years, human factions in the other three seas avoided the Nine Sons out of fear that association would attract the same Immortal’s wrath. This isolation extended to the Southern Endless Sea’s other cultivator factions, not merely the alliance itself 1250.
During Tianyan Sect’s absence, outsiders became accustomed to an organization called the “Nine Sons” having only eight active Immortal Sects. Luo Yi’s return as Tianyan Sect Master restored the ninth leadership seat, which the alliance publicly recognized through its succession conference 1206 1208 1213.
Organization
Documented Member Sects
| Sect | Documented role or representatives |
|---|---|
| Tianyan Sect | Formerly the strongest member and the alliance’s central Dao-Merging Grounds. Its historical leaders included Tiansuanzi and two vice sect masters; its restored leadership is held by Luo Yi 1225 1327 1364. |
| Heavenly Star Sect | Led by Bai Suxin. Its representatives include Dao Seed Pan Linfeng and elder Gao Yuliang 1176 1182 1245. |
| Heavenly Pill Sect | Initially supplied cultivation and healing pills. After Tianyan Sect’s disaster, it became one of the alliance’s principal fighting forces 998 1273. |
| Heavenly Moon Sect | Pan Zhengxiong is its first heir to the sect’s Dao-Merging Grounds. Its Personal Disciples wear the distinctive Black Moon Robe 1029 1067. |

| Heavenly Treasure Sect | Its Dao Seed participates in the Northern Endless Sea mission to obtain allies and information 1384 1389. |
| Heavenly Maiden Sect | Its Dao Seed participates in the aid mission and argues that the alliance could consolidate its forces rather than submit to the Dragon Palaces 1364 1389. |
| Heavenly Luo Sect | Its Dao Seed participates in the aid mission and identifies Yue Shiqun’s Void-Shattering Thunderclap Ruler in recorded battle images 1384 1389. |
Leadership and Succession
- Mutual defense: The eight established sect masters are described as united against their enemies and pledged to defend one another 1206.
- Sect-master authority: Dao Seeds defer to a sect master’s decisions even when concerned for his safety. Luo Yi’s presence carries authority without requiring a formal Edict 1288 1302.
- Dao Seeds and inheritance: Dao Seeds are closely tied to succession at their sects’ Dao-Merging Grounds; Pan Zhengxiong’s conduct could jeopardize his position as the Heavenly Moon Sect’s first heir 1067.
- Public recognition: Succession conferences introduce a new sect master to regional factions and display the alliance’s collective strength. Past gatherings shaped Southern Endless Sea affairs for thousands of years 1206 1208.
- Diplomatic protocol: Established sect masters normally intervene personally only when a Dragon King of equivalent standing appears. Lesser matters are left to other representatives 1247.
Territory and Resources
- Nine continents and more than a dozen great cities: Human territories won from the Aquatic Clans by force 1102.
- Nine Dao Fusion Lands: The territorial foundations of the member sects’ inherited power 961.
- Tiannan Continent: Location of Tianyan Sect and its coveted Dao-Merging Grounds. The alliance’s leaders refused to appropriate those grounds instead of recognizing Luo Yi’s succession 1207 1364.
- Azure Underworld Cloud City: Alliance territory defended against Southern Sea Dragon Palace demands to enter and attack Mountain Sea Merchant Alliance refugees 1067.
- Vassal factions: Lesser powers such as the Talisman Sect, Sun Family, and Sea Prosperity Pavilion stood below the alliance’s Immortal Sects 1032.
- Commercial protection: The Mountain Sea Merchant Alliance expanded its trade across much of the Endless Sea under the shelter of the Nine Sons 1047.
- Limited resources: Southern Endless Sea cultivation resources are scarce. The Nine Sons generally reserve teleportation formations for life-or-death emergencies, unlike the Mountain-Shaking Immortal Sect’s routine use of them 1252 1385.
Military Strength
| Period or comparison | Documented assessment |
|---|---|
| Historical peak | Eleven Tribulation-Crossing Pseudo-Immortals, including three from Tianyan Sect 1327. |
| After Tianyan Sect’s destruction | Eight surviving sect masters remained the foundation of the alliance’s top-tier strength 1250. |
| Against the Southern Sea Dragon Palace | A fully united alliance could surpass the palace, although individual confrontations could expose disadvantages in deployed forces 1066 1126 1231. |
| Against the North Sea Dragon Palace | Bai Suxin describes the alliance as considerably stronger overall than the weakest of the Four Seas Dragon Palaces 1249. |
| Individual member sects | Taken separately, the sects rank as second-rate forces across the wider Endless Sea, below a faction such as the Mountain-Shaking Immortal Sect with its two Pseudo-Immortals 1257. |
| Possible wartime coalition | With outside allies and forces freed by abandoning Tiannan Continent, the alliance could assemble more than ten Pseudo-Immortals, becoming comparable to the West Sea Dragon Palace 1364. |
Strengths and Limits
- Veteran leadership: The eight established sect masters have advanced far along the Tribulation-Crossing path. Bai Suxin cautions that princes merely described as “comparable” to Pseudo-Immortals should not be measured against those veterans 1364 1365.
- Powerful Dao Seeds: Liu Yiyi ranks among the alliance’s three strongest Dao Seeds; her swordsmanship surprises Mountain-Shaking Immortal Sect cultivators 1293 1294.
- No body-cultivation specialty: None of the nine sects specializes in body cultivation. Luo Yi’s exceptional physique is therefore not treated as a product of the alliance’s usual training 1301.
- Costly collective defense: War against the Southern and North Sea Dragon Palaces could destroy most of the foundations accumulated during the alliance’s long withdrawal, even if it ultimately won 1271.
- Territorial commitments: Consolidating its strongest fighters would improve defensive security but sacrifice resources, cultivation prospects, and potentially Tianyan Sect’s Dao-Merging Grounds during the Demon Realm Army’s invasion 1364.
Internal Politics
Competition over Tiannan Continent
Tianyan Sect’s Dao-Merging Grounds became a source of rivalry within the alliance. Lu Kexun courted the Southern Sea Dragon Palace for private advantage, while other elders tolerated his conduct because they also coveted the Tiannan Continent’s inheritance 1126.
Qin Yezhou suspected that members of other alliance sects might be involved behind attacks on factions newly returned to Tianyan Sect. His assessment was not proof of their involvement, but it identified the attacks’ political effect: weakening Luo Yi’s authority by showing that he could not protect his followers 1063.
Open retaliation against another member sect’s elders remained dangerous. Luo Yi recognized that killing them could provoke their sect masters and shatter the already strained coalition. Pan Linfeng and Gao Yuliang likewise restrained themselves from killing Lu Kexun publicly because of the consequences for alliance unity 1182 1194.
Luo Yi’s Allegiance and Secrecy
- Reincarnation theory: The eight sect masters speculate that Luo Yi may be a reincarnated Immortal because of his cultivation speed, mastery of laws, and ability to challenge stronger realms. This remains their interpretation, not a confirmed identity 1221.
- Concealed status: Dao Seeds are instructed not to reveal his identity or extraordinary strength during the Northern Endless Sea mission, lest rival powers offer enough support to draw him away 1252.
- Doubts about loyalty: Many alliance cultivators believe Luo Yi has little attachment to the Nine Sons and could readily obtain backing elsewhere 1288.
- Continued commitment: Luo Yi rejects outside recruitment, expects substantial support from the Nine Sons, and plans to share information about unclaimed Dao-Merging Grounds as repayment for their kindness 1355 1363.
- Proposed new inheritance: He later considers arranging for one of the eight Dao Seeds to inherit the Ghost Child Clan’s extra Dao-Merging Grounds, creating a powerful ally indebted to him 1388.
External Relationships
- Southern Sea Dragon Palace — Principal regional rival. Mutual restraint concealed longstanding hostility until disputes involving Tianyan Sect, slain princes, and affiliated forces escalated toward open war 1067 1172 1203.
- North Sea Dragon Palace — Joins the Southern palace against the alliance, upsetting the regional balance and prompting the search for outside aid 1245 1271.
- East Sea Dragon Palace — Former supporter of Qin Yezhou and a potential partner in the alliance’s earlier rise; that opportunity ended with the Immortal’s retaliation 1312.
- Mountain-Shaking Immortal Sect — Initially cautious and transactional. Cao Yuxiu promises assistance after Luo Yi’s intervention, and the sect later pledges full support against the Southern and North Sea Dragon Palaces 1271 1314 1389.
- Hundred-Knowledge Pavilion — Offers suspiciously enthusiastic support after nearly a year of refusals elsewhere. Its meeting becomes a trap involving North Sea Dragon Palace forces 1389 1393 1394.
- Other seas’ human factions — Largely avoid the alliance because of the lingering threat from the Immortal who destroyed Tianyan Sect 1250.
- Qin Yezhou’s former companions — Several now hold high positions or lead Immortal Sects and could provide Pseudo-Immortal support, though calling them in carries strategic costs 1364.
