Nature and Function

• Every Shinigami possesses a unique Zanpakutō, through which they develop individualized Shikai and Bankai techniques. Shinigami swordsmanship, or Zanjutsu, is centered on its use 8.
• A Zanpakutō begins as an Asauchi. Although academy-issued Asauchi are initially identical, their eventual form and abilities are shaped by their wielder's own power 160.
• Tsuna describes a Zanpakutō as the “key” that unlocks a Shinigami's innate talent and potential; Yamamoto similarly calls it the weapon that carries a Shinigami's power 160.
• A wielder's mentality is reflected in their blade. Komamura's fear of revealing his wolf-man heritage manifested as the armor on his Bankai, Tenken 173.
• Zanpakutō spirits represent the wielder's most unmasked inner self. Understanding the spirit is therefore a means of understanding oneself 199.

Recognition

• Obtaining Bankai through subjugation does not necessarily mean the Zanpakutō fully recognizes its wielder 167.
• Complete recognition can be achieved through relationships ranging from master and servant to equal friendship 199.
• Renji's incomplete Bankai stemmed from having gained the baboon king's recognition while lacking that of Zabimaru's snake king 171.
• A spirit may withhold dangerous power until its wielder's Reiatsu is sufficient; Hozukimaru concealed Hanatarō's potential Bankai for this reason 200.

Blade Zen and Materialization

Blade Zen

Blade Zen is the practice of communicating with one's Zanpakutō in the inner world. It is used to deepen recognition, learn the spirit's true nature, and improve control over released power 167 199.

• A Zanpakutō can share senses and awareness with its wielder. After communicating with Tengen, Komamura developed Mind's Eye, allowing him to observe from multiple perspectives 300.
• Blade Zen can be forcibly induced. Muramasa exploits a Zanpakutō's dissatisfaction to pull its wielder into their inner world 190.
• Kenpachi is advised to use Blade Zen to master his Zanpakutō's power and reunite with Yachiru 365.

Materialization

Muramasa can materialize Zanpakutō spirits in the physical world, allowing wielders to speak with them directly rather than relying solely on inner-world training 199.

• While a spirit is materialized, its wielder loses access to Shikai because that power has been drawn out with the spirit 199.
• Shikai can be restored by either defeating the materialized spirit or earning its recognition 199.
• Materialization can improve a strained partnership, as with Rukia and Sode no Shirayuki, but it can also provoke conflict, as Kazeshini immediately attacked Shūhei Hisagi 199.
• Muramasa's Bankai, Mugokujin, can enter a target's inner world and pull out their Zanpakutō spirit; it was used to manifest Ryūjin Jakka 201.

Unusual Forms and Composition

• Tsuna possesses genuine paired Zanpakutō: a black blade born from his Shinigami power and a white blade born from Hollow power. They are considered true paired blades because they originate from two distinct powers 15 27.
• A Zanpakutō may contain both Shinigami and Hollow power. Tsuna detected a Hollow presence within Kensei's Asauchi after Kensei's failed Bankai Hollowfication 27 28.
• Tsuna theorizes that a blade containing both powers could potentially master both Bankai and Resurrección 28.
• Arrancar Resurrección differs from Shikai and Bankai: instead of releasing inner power outward through the Zanpakutō, it returns the power stored in the blade to the Arrancar's body and restores a Hollow-like form 132.

Forging and Reforging

• Ōetsu Nimaiya forges the Asauchi that underlie conventional Zanpakutō. As long as a wielder relies on such a blade, Nimaiya can exercise authority over it 310.
• Tsuna states that Arrancar and Shinigami souls are the materials of Nimaiya's “two-blade forging” method 161.
• Zanpakutō fusion returns the power residing in the blade to its wielder. A self-reforged blade is no longer dependent on Nimaiya's Asauchi and cannot be controlled through his authority 310 325.
• Tsuna and Urahara used an empty shell Zanpakutō, Muramasa's absorbed Reiatsu, and Tsuna's Sky attribute to forge Muramasa into Little Rain's true Zanpakutō 196 197.
• This process cannot be mass-produced: a replacement blade may allow Shikai, but it will not necessarily reproduce the former Zanpakutō or spirit 196.

Control and Vulnerabilities

• Ōetsu Nimaiya can compel Zanpakutō forged from his Asauchi to leave their wielders and activate their powers, including Bankai 325 326.
• Forced Bankai activation is dangerous for undeveloped blades. Zanpakutō that have not undergone Bankai training can crack or be destroyed by the Reiatsu burden 328.
• Yamamoto and Ryūjin Jakka developed a safeguard that returns the blade to its Asauchi state, severing its active connection and preventing Nimaiya from controlling it 325.
• Urahara's modified Benihime is immune to Nimaiya's control, while Ichigo's Tensa Zangetsu is unaffected because it was not forged by Nimaiya 325.
• Muramasa can manipulate a Zanpakutō by stirring its grievances, demonstrating that a poor relationship between wielder and spirit can become a combat vulnerability 190.

Notable Zanpakutō Spirits

• Zangetsu — Ichigo's spirit and combat partner; its blade's bandaged hilt enables complex, mid-range swordplay that Ichigo initially failed to use effectively 91.
• Sode no Shirayuki — Rukia's gentle, cold-natured spirit, who materializes to rebuild their long-neglected relationship 199.
• Zabimaru — Renji's two-souled Zanpakutō, manifested as an ape-like woman and an aloof snake-like man 202.
• Tengen / Black Rope Heavenly Punisher — Komamura's independent Bankai entity, which shares damage and senses with him 300.
• Yachiru Kusajishi — The personification of Kenpachi's Zanpakutō; her Three-Step Sword Beast manifests additional invisible sword attacks 535.
• Muramasa — A former rogue Zanpakutō capable of controlling and materializing other spirits; after being reforged, it becomes Little Rain's partner 190 197.
