Background / History

Ichigo grew up in Karakura Town alongside Tatsuki Arisawa, who remained one of his closest childhood friends. After his mother Masaki—herself a Quincy—lost her powers to Yhwach’s Auswählen and died during a Hollow attack, Ichigo became more withdrawn, though he and Tatsuki remained friends and classmates. 2

He met Sawada Tsunayoshi as a classmate at Karakura Elementary School. Under Tsunayoshi’s guidance, Ichigo began developing a strange bow-shaped Fullbring and later patrolled Karakura Town with Uryū Ishida, hoping to protect others and reduce Tsunayoshi’s burden. 2 31

During a large Hollow attack, Ichigo’s desire to protect Orihime Inoue and Rukia Kuchiki drove him to accept Rukia’s Soul Reaper power. He absorbed all of her Reiatsu, gained a massive Zanpakuto, and became responsible for fighting Hollows in Karakura Town. 42

After Tsunayoshi severed his Chain of Fate to force him to seek his own power, Ichigo entered his inner world and met the being who led him to reclaim his Zanpakuto, Zangetsu. He later learned Getsuga Tensho from his father, Isshin, and entered Soul Society to rescue Rukia from execution. 44 45 46 62

Ichigo’s early Soul Society battles exposed the instability of his Hollow power. His defeat at Byakuya Kuchiki’s hands triggered an uncontrolled Bull Head Hollow transformation, after which he feared losing himself in combat. By reconciling with Hachi and accepting both Hachi and Uncle Zangetsu as powers that exist to protect him, he began overcoming that fear. 64 87 89 90

Ichigo is cheerful and approachable around his classmates, but intensely protective whenever his friends or family are threatened. His wish for power consistently comes from refusing to let others fight or suffer in his place. 2 42 168

He can become proud and reckless after gaining new strength, especially when challenging Tsunayoshi or facing enemies he considers threats to his friends. This confidence sometimes leaves him vulnerable against more experienced fighters such as Byakuya, but he does not surrender easily. 44 63

Ichigo’s emotions strongly affect his combat performance. His fear of becoming an uncontrollable Hollow initially undermines him, while his acceptance of Hachi, Zangetsu, and Uncle Zangetsu allows him to fight with greater confidence and control. 87 89 108
