Soul Cycle and World Stability

Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the World of the Living form the Three Realms. Their stability originally depends on the Soul King acting as the “wedge” or linchpin holding them apart; without that stabilizing role, the realms collapse into chaos. 7 317

• Souls purified through Shinigami power return to the normal cycle between the Three Realms. 252
• Souls without Reiatsu generally live mortal-length second lives in Soul Society, then disperse into Reishi and eventually reincarnate in the World of the Living. 52

Governance

Gotei 13

The Gotei 13 is Soul Society's principal military organization. It protects Seireitei and, after the post-Monk reforms, formally assumes responsibility for safeguarding all Three Realms. 148 355

• The original Gotei 13 was founded by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto during the Quincy invasion a thousand years earlier. 149

History

Founding and the Quincy War

A thousand years ago, Soul Society was divided into regions controlled by major noble clans rather than the later Seireitei–Rukongai structure. The Quincy invasion devastated the realm, forcing surviving nobles to unite and establish the original Seireitei. 149

Yamamoto gathered twelve other powerful fighters and organized the first Gotei 13 to repel the invasion. The war ended in victory, but eleven of the thirteen captains died. 7 149

Noble Control and Yamamoto's Reforms

Postwar reconstruction made the Gotei 13 dependent on noble resources. In exchange, the nobles gained division leadership and later established Central 46, weakening Yamamoto's direct authority. 149

Yamamoto countered this arrangement by founding the Shin'ō Academy and elevating talented commoners into the Gotei 13. Over centuries, noble-born captains were gradually displaced, leaving the Sixth Division as the principal noble-aligned division. 148 149

Aizen's Rebellion

Aizen's actions destabilized Soul Society from within: he manipulated Central 46, conducted Hollowfication experiments, and attacked with Arrancar forces. 92 101 132

After Aizen's departure, Yamamoto used the destruction of Central 46 to advance reforms, considered restoring the Visored to their former divisions, and prepared a new political structure centered on protection rather than noble interests. 148 149

Inaba Kagerōza's Coup

Inaba Kagerōza used modified souls and Reigai copies to seize Seireitei, attack the barrier system, and attempt to destroy Soul Society with a replica of Zanka no Tachi. 218 222 223

The legitimate captains counterattacked from the World of the Living, reclaimed Seireitei, eliminated internal dissidents, and secured Inaba's artificial-soul facilities for future study. 221 225

Conflict with the Soul King Palace

Aizen's ascent to the Soul King Palace exposed the Zero Division's authority over Seireitei and the Soul King's condition as a limbless being sealed in crystal to stabilize the Three Realms. 302 317

When Hyōsube Ichibē sought to capture Tsuna and Ichigo as Human Pillars, the Gotei 13 rebelled against the Zero Division's order. The conflict ended with the Soul King stripping the Monk and Ōetsu Nimaiya of their former authority and initiating a new era of cooperation between Seireitei and the palace. 323 350 355

Modernization and the Quincy Invasion

Kyōraku's administration rapidly modernized Soul Society through transportation networks, technical development, evacuation systems, and expanded responsibility for all Three Realms. 355 484

When Yhwach's Quincy forces invaded, Seireitei and Rukongai endured substantial damage but avoided total destruction through evacuation measures, coordinated defense, and the actions of Soul Society's allied factions. 487 488 521

Hell's Assault

Hell later attacked all Three Realms. Soul Society initially resisted more effectively than the other realms due to its organization and concentrated combat strength, but Sinners and the ruins of the Soul King Palace eventually descended upon it. 575

Kyōraku ultimately ordered the abandonment of Seireitei as a battlefield, directing the allied forces toward Karakura Town. 576 During the crisis, Kuruyashiki Kenpachi entered Seireitei through a Hell rift and used his Bankai to swallow nearly half the city. 583
