Background
Yhwach was defeated by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto roughly a thousand years before the main Quincy war. Yamamoto later recalls that Yhwach repeatedly drew power from his own followers whenever he was overpowered, making many of the Quincy casualties effectively Yhwach’s own doing 165.
His eventual return was foretold by the Saint Emperor’s Song. While sealed, he needed a fixed period to recover his heartbeat, consciousness, and power; his incomplete Almighty could not be fully restored before the end of this period 164 396 398.
Yhwach preserved the Quincy homeland of a millennium ago within the shadows. After withdrawing from Hueco Mundo, he led the legion back to this ruined territory and used it as the Wandenreich’s hidden base 405. Later, his forces established a concealed town on London’s outskirts while pursuing operations across multiple worlds 422.
Appearance
Yhwach is a long-haired, bearded man whose presence causes the Quincy army to kneel. He is initially seen wearing a dark-red cloak, while later transformations alter his body and eyes substantially 404.
- Long black hair and beard 404
- Dark-red cloak during his first confrontation with Tsuna 404
- Blue Reishi veins emerge across his body when using Blut 497 503
- Golden wings and holy equipment can manifest through Quincy power 498 554
- Develops four pupils and eight wings after taking in parts of the Soul King 564
Personality
Yhwach is supremely confident in his authority, power, and ability to control the future. He treats most Quincy as expendable resources, preserving them only while they remain useful to his objective of remaking the world 393 404 497.
He is calculating enough to retreat rather than fight Tsuna before fully recovering, using decoys, shadow travel, and the sacrifice of subordinates to protect himself and his army 395 404. However, challenges to his authority or the limitations of his Almighty provoke visible anger, particularly when Aizen’s deceptions and the Soul King’s actions undermine his plans 398 500 569.
Despite his contempt for others, Yhwach acknowledges exceptional opponents. He considers Aizen worthy of being targeted with his personal Spirit Bow and Arrows, and he recognizes Ichigo as the figure fated to kill him 503 558.
Abilities & Skills
The Almighty
Yhwach’s defining power grants him omniscience and omnipotence: he can perceive future events, adapt to them, and alter outcomes. His eyes change as this power develops, progressing from normal pupils to three pupils and eventually four 404 497 564.
- Predicts attack trajectories and evades Yamamoto’s combined Zanka no Tachi techniques 497.
- Sees futures in which Ichigo kills him and directs Haschwalth to keep Ichigo occupied 558.
- Cannot perfectly perceive powers or worlds unfamiliar to him; Aizen exploits this weakness through foreign worlds within Kyōka Suigetsu’s illusion 501 502.
- Is overwhelmed when Tsuna and the multiple Ichigos create too many viable futures for him to manage 560 568.
- Becomes increasingly constrained when Tsuna’s Sky Soft Flames neutralize abilities that leave his body 569.
The Auswählen
The Auswählen is Yhwach’s Holy Selection: it seizes the life and power of Quincy, then redistributes that power as he chooses 164.
- Previously took the lives and powers of mixed-blood Quincy, including Ichigo’s and Uryū’s mothers 164.
- Revives Cang Du and Bazz-B by reclaiming power and life from lesser Quincy 404.
- Draws power from fallen Quincy across the three realms and empowers surviving Sternritter 497.
- Reclaims Schrift seeds for himself, including the Saint Letter Steel 557.
- His use of Quincy lives as fuel drives distrust among followers such as Liltotto 498.
Quincy Techniques
Yhwach possesses high-level command of standard Quincy combat arts and uses them at a level far beyond ordinary soldiers.
- Spirit Bow and Arrows — His personal archery technique was later distributed across the Quincy to strengthen their cohesion 503.
- Hirenkyaku — Uses the Quincy movement technique with enough skill to evade Gua’s attack and escape Tsuna 404.
- Blut Vene — Forms layered Reishi defenses capable of surviving Yamamoto’s attacks and Aizen’s Kurohitsugi 395 501.
- Blut Arterie — Channels offensive Reishi through his body and weaponry to enhance attacks 502 545.
- Sklaverei / Reishi manipulation — Freely gathers and reshapes Reishi into shields, platforms, weapons, arrows, and structures 404 498 503.
Sanctification and Reclaimed Schrifts
After absorbing Quincy powers and parts of the Soul King, Yhwach can employ abilities originally belonging to others 557 564.
- Uses Steel, reclaimed from Cang Du, to withstand Tsuna’s XBURNER without injury 557.
- Uses The Compulsory after absorbing the Soul King’s left hand, reflecting attacks through Reishi-made nerves 564.
- Uses The Visionary through arrows to threaten the defenders around the Soul King 564.
- Uses the Miracle to regenerate from otherwise fatal damage and continue fighting 566 569.
- His attempt to adapt to Tsuna’s Reiatsu fails because Tsuna’s Hollow nature makes that Reishi poisonous to him 561.
Regeneration and Self-Bestowal
Yhwach can use omnipotence on himself to recover from catastrophic damage and grant himself new capabilities 503.
- Regenerates after being burned and charred by attacks from unfamiliar worlds 503.
- Alters his strategy from observing foreign powers to empowering himself against them 503.
- Regenerates after Tsuna’s imitation Getsuga Tensho severely wounds him 562.
- Continues restoring himself after being cut apart by Ichigo’s attacks until his options are exhausted 569.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Quincy Cross Saber — A Reishi weapon used in close combat 501 558.
- Spirit Bow and Arrows — Yhwach’s signature ranged weapon and personal archery technique 503.
- Blade / Soya Ashirogi — A being forcibly shaped into a blade containing Bleach, Hollow, Fullbring, and Quincy power; used in attempts to kill the Soul King 499 563.
- Quincy Cross formations — Used to form defenses such as Hallowed Sanctuary 502.
Relationships
- Soul King / Adonais — His father and the central target of his plan; Yhwach seeks to replace him, while the Soul King calls him a “foolish son” and ultimately frustrates his schemes 499 569.
- Jugram Haschwalth — His Sternritter Captain and “half-body,” entrusted with protecting him during his recovery and delaying Ichigo 396 555 558.
- Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto — Long-standing enemy who defeated him a thousand years ago and repeatedly confronts him during the Quincy war 165 394 497.
- Sawada Tsunayoshi — A major obstacle whose desires conflict with Yhwach’s; Yhwach underestimates him because the future initially shows Ichigo as his killer 486 556 558.
- Kurosaki Ichigo — The person Yhwach repeatedly foresees killing him; Yhwach attempts to isolate and manipulate him through Haschwalth 558 562.
- Sōsuke Aizen — A deceptive adversary who traps Yhwach in illusions and exposes the limits of the Almighty 500 501 503.
- Bazz-B — Former subordinate whom Yhwach abandons, revives through Auswählen, and later ignores even after Bazz-B wounds him 404 558.
- Sternritter — Elite Quincy subordinates empowered through Saint Letters and Vollständig, but ultimately treated as tools and reserves of power 166 393 497.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return of the Quincy King
Yhwach’s predicted return prompts Soul Society to prepare for war. Tsuna identifies the Auswählen as the force responsible for the deaths of many Quincy, establishing Yhwach as Ichigo and Uryū’s shared enemy 164.
Wandenreich Withdrawal
Yamamoto invades the Wandenreich and appears to defeat Yhwach, but the defeated figure is a substitute. The real Yhwach retreats with the army to recover, avoiding direct conflict with Yamamoto and Tsuna until his powers return 395 396.
First Meeting with Tsuna

Defeat
Tsuna summons Ichigos from multiple timelines, whose souls resonate and amplify each version’s power. Tsuna’s Sky Soft Flames progressively neutralize Yhwach’s abilities, allowing the Ichigos to overwhelm and finally destroy him with a combined tide of Getsuga Tensho attacks 566 568 569.
Conflict with the King of Hell
After the battle, Yhwach returns to his own world and later joins the resistance against the King of Hell. He discovers that he cannot harm the King of Hell because of their shared bloodline, forcing him to stand with the Soul King’s side 596 597.
