Background / History
Foundation and Expansion
The Immortal Venerable was the first human cultivator to systematically classify cultivation methods, establish the Tai Chi Immortal Dao, and achieve ascension. As humanity’s foremost leader, he founded the Immortal Palace’s order in the Central Plains. Its original structure joined the Three Enclosures, the Twenty-Eight Mansions, and the Four Divine Countries into a single imperial system 63.
The Palace expanded through warfare against demon gods and other competing powers. Successive generations of generals destroyed Demon God Palaces, captured powerful demons, and displayed their severed heads on the capital’s walls. These campaigns established human dominance over the territories that became the Three Enclosures and Twelve Countries 149.
Conquered lands outside the original Four Divine Countries became the Eight Countries. Less-talented collateral descendants of the Immortal Venerable received mortal thrones, while descendants entrusted with his cultivation inheritance became the immortal guardians above them. These regional establishments formed the Twelve Immortal Palaces in the broader sense 63.
Hereditary Rule and Opposition
The Palace treated cultivation as a family inheritance: techniques, treasures, and advancement opportunities remained within privileged bloodlines. Cultivators unwilling to submit were branded heretics; Ink Bamboo Mountain originated among such independent practitioners 14 25.
This monopoly was challenged by the Xuan Sect’s master–disciple inheritance and the God Sect’s sect-based inheritance. Changes associated with the False Moon also made hereditary concentration dangerous, since one family member’s demonic transformation could destroy the entire household 25.
Loss of Imperial Supremacy
The Xuan Girl led an assault into the Three Walls and killed the reigning Immortal Emperor. The battle severed the Immortal Venerable’s direct-line inheritance, weakened the Four Countries, and encouraged rebellion among the Eight frontier countries. The Xuan Girl then ascended rather than founding a replacement dynasty 221.
The assassination did not eliminate the Palace’s wealth or regional armies. Instead, the weakened imperial clan lost practical control to aristocratic factions. Regional governors were appointed to hold territories the central government could no longer reliably secure 127 510.
Succession wars, the rise of rival sects, the illusory moon disaster, and rebellions by the Luo Sect and Yellow Heaven Dao further eroded imperial unity. Without another ascended sovereign to command obedience, the Three Enclosures increasingly mediated disputes among regional powers rather than ruling them outright 63 216.
Organization and Government
The Three Enclosures
“Immortal Palace” can refer narrowly to the Three Enclosures or broadly to the imperial network of the Twelve Immortal Palaces. The Three Enclosures also serve as shorthand for the imperial clan, the court, and the immortal aristocratic families 63 346.
| Enclosure | Function | Defenses and Features |
|---|---|---|
| Ziwei Yuan | Residence of the Immortal Emperor and imperial family | The highest and largest flying palace; protected by formations, imperial guards, and concealed technological defenses 346 499 |
| Taiwei Yuan | Administrative center for ministers and star officials | Its government offices were relocated into a flying palace; guarded by the Central Guards 346 |
| Tianshi Yuan | District associated with the Three Walls’ immortal clans | Its “commoners” descend from the population of the Immortal Venerable’s era; guarded by the Chariot Cavalry General’s Northern and Southern armies 346 |
Court and Aristocratic Power
- Immortal Emperor: Retains the throne, seals, and formal authority to confer titles. The emperor observed by Li Fan is at peak Nascent Soul and functions largely as an approval mechanism for decisions made elsewhere 499.
- Grand Tutor: Controls court policy and commands substantial support among the immortal clans and Xuan Sect factions. His office accumulates troops and resources even while Ziwei Yuan’s direct influence contracts 346 493.
- Military aristocracy: The 140,000 households established with the Suwei form a foundational base of the ruling class. Purges, exile, and the admission of new frontier nobles continually change its membership 216.
- Regional commanders: Their cooperation depends heavily on family interests and expected rewards. Orders to mobilize may produce only token contingents when a campaign offers little profit 216.
- Marriage alliances: The secluded imperial family selects spouses from aristocratic houses when heirs come of age, binding those families to the throne while effectively securing hostages 346.
The Divine Administration
The Palace’s divine system began as a means of honoring fallen soldiers. It developed into the thirteen-volume artificial Heavenly Book, the Investiture of the Gods, through which officially registered individuals could become regional guardian deities or spiritual officials after death 389.
- Eligible posts include civil and military officials, dukes, marquises, city gods, land deities, and heavenly kings 389.
- Divine-path officials serving the flying palaces leave their bodies in earthly government offices or city god temples. Their spirits inhabit official seals, tokens, pendants, and similar objects 346.
- This service offers access to the aristocracy but leaves officials vulnerable: punishment can include destruction of both their physical bodies and spirits 346.
Cultivation and Military Capabilities
Imperial Cultivation
The Palace’s cultivation traditions do not provide a simple equivalence between realm, lifespan, and fighting strength 331.
- Immortal Emperor’s Inner Canon: A profound imperial inheritance associated with reaching Dao Comprehension. Lingshu and Suwen are complementary orthodox methods that omit some imperial secret killing techniques 405.
- Ancient combat methods: Some were designed exclusively for fighting and did not extend lifespan, prompting the development of external elixirs such as Foundation Establishment, Divine Essence, and Divine Infant pills 331.
- Visible manifestations: Palace Golden Core techniques are recognizable by protective divine light, blazing flames, and dazzling armor 35.
- Longevity limits: External alchemy does not grant indefinite life, and the Palace’s Nascent Soul methods cannot preserve clear spiritual consciousness indefinitely. Aging experts can suffer mental decline and the five decays of heaven and man 508.
Heavenly Soldiers and Divine Generals
Palace armies combine martial specialists, formations, and supporting cultivators. Divine generals—particularly those of Xun Country’s Thunder Department—serve as scouts, assault troops, tactical commanders, and special forces, directing other cultivators’ spells and treasures 121 161.
| Force or Weapon | Capabilities | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial Guards | Powerful hereditary military formations, including the Western Guard among the Four Imperial Guards 191 | Factional interests, salary skimming, and understrength units undermine deployment 216 351 |
| Twenty-Eight Heavenly Constellation Guardian Divine Soldiers | Palace-powered artifacts that Golden Core operators can use to overpower Nascent Soul demons; can combine into a Twenty-Eight Constellation killing formation 157 | Depend on the Palace’s immortal-power support 157 |
| Grand Generals of the Pillar of the State | Counted among the Palace’s strongest living military assets 501 | Often retained as guards within the Three Enclosures 501 |
| Great Spiritual Officials of Punishment of the Heavens | Deceased martial powers united with divine bodies and weapons for demon suppression 501 | Their ancient techniques are extensively understood by enemies; a coordinated group of forty to fifty Godly Monarchs destroys more than a dozen 501 |
| Imperial Divine Weapons | Autonomous armor operated by heroic spirits or preserved combat skills 446 | God Sect Blood God Children can infiltrate piloted machines and possess their operators 557 |
Field Fortifications
Palace armies traditionally establish four defensive layers when building a camp 554.
| Layer | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Martial Temple | A locally fashioned war-god effigy suppresses hostile spirits and protects against miasma and disease 554 |
| Four Altars | Worship of Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise stabilizes local spiritual conditions and guards against natural disasters 554 |
| Extraordinary formations | Provides the camp’s formation-based defenses 554 |
| Civil engineering | Supplies physical fortifications and prepared defensive works 554 |
- Shared banners and commands allow armies from the Twelve Countries to coordinate on an enormous scale 554.
- Factional resistance prevents substantial reform, while the God Sect has spent generations studying how to defeat these standardized methods 554.
Demon Suppression
Palace methods separate a demon’s body, head, and soul because physical destruction alone may not prevent regeneration, possession, or reincarnation 501.
- Valuable organs, cores, and marrow are harvested for artifact production 501.
- Dangerous bodily remains are sealed locally in demon-suppressing pagodas 501.
- Demon souls are collected with soul-suppressing banners and transported to Luofeng’s immortal prison 501.
- Severed heads are displayed at the capital as demonstrations of imperial authority 149 501.
Equipment and Infrastructure
- Flying palaces: Originally developed to relocate Taiwei Yuan’s offices, the technology spread to aristocratic residences and fortresses. Palace altitude visibly expresses rank, with Ziwei Yuan above all others 346.
- Runic lamellar armor: High-grade armor bears defensive inscriptions on individual plates. Its expense and production demands make complete sets valuable hereditary possessions 465.
- Yuntai Peak: A joint Palace–Xuan Sect project built over ancient Palace ruins. Its core is a former Spirit Race sacred sphere later used as the emperor’s throne, capable of levitation, teleportation, and generating gravity 338 339.
- Ziwei Yuan defenses: Following the emperor’s assassination, the rebuilt palace prohibited spiritual qi and Daoist energy, using ancient antigravity technology and concealed Nascent Soul-level defensive systems instead 499.
- North Mang Mountain: Official imperial burial grounds containing imperial tombs, treasures, and divine weapons; guarded by elite Northern Army troops under the Guardian General 508.
- Imperial treasury: Despite losses to internal conflict, its accumulated treasures remain comparable to Yuntai Peak’s holdings 499.
Connection to the Company
Hidden Control
Li Fan’s investigations reveal that the Company controls the Palace through Ziwei Yuan and has infiltrated immortal aristocratic families. Its continuing business includes studying immortal power and developing methods of human enhancement 540.
- Court personnel as cover: Eunuchs, attendants, and other unobtrusive palace roles allow Company agents to coordinate with local inhabitants and maintain player experiences without attracting attention 564.
- Bloodline research: The Company preserves the imperial family and ascended Immortal Venerables’ descendants as genetic sources. “Li Yi” is a prepared body for a major client, with an imperial destiny supplied as a paid scenario 572.
- Immortal tomb facility: Robotic guards protect preserved corpses of ancient generals and nobles; the system identifies the site as a likely Palace cloning gene bank 371.
Weapon Refining Pill
The Weapon Refining Pill emerges from research into the Demon God Han Ba’s Devil Fetus and collected malevolent corpses. It is intended to transform Nascent Soul Martial Gods into immortal, indestructible Demon God generals 540.
Li Fan and Xiao Qingzhi discover renowned Palace commanders—including Wen Tianjun—converted into malevolent corpse Demon Gods beneath the Grand Tutor’s formation. Nailed, chained, and sealed with talismans, they supply power to the formation rather than commanding armies 540.
Planned Replacement
The Company designates the Celestial Devil Sword Palace as its intended new agent and successor to the old Palace. The plan replaces the Bei Gong imperial lineage with the Nangong family and provides players with Nangong-produced vessels 541.
Relationships
- Xuan Sect — Historical challenger that broke imperial supremacy. Later relations divide by faction: Song Mountain and other Central Plains sects cooperate with the Three Walls, while other sects compete for territory or oppose its escape strategy 221 341.
- God Sect — Persistent military and ideological enemy. Zhang Dali describes the Palace’s destruction as the foundation of the God Sect’s purpose 355.
- Ink Bamboo Mountain — Founded by cultivators condemned as heretics. The Palace later attempts to secure its support through Li Fan’s proposed noble title and marriage alliance 14 125.
- Li Fan — Receives imperial recognition while pursuing his own interests. He is made Marquis of Yuting and later appointed to oversee civil engineering and conscript labor, using the position for reconstruction and disaster relief 499 508.
- Nangong Immortal Family — Regional Palace power associated with Li Country. Its internal conflict and loss of Li Country’s offerings weaken the Palace faction in the south 35.
- Luofeng Immortal Palace — Originally a legitimate frontier army in Xun Country. After its patrons lose an internal struggle, the Three Walls exterminate the ruling line and back its enemies; the surviving army finds refuge among previously subdued mountain tribes 201.
- Song Mountain — Close political partner whose connections with Palace remnants continue after the imperial institution falls 341 644.
