Background

Konoha was established after the Warring States period by the Senju and Uchiha clans, whose allied followers became the village's early backbone. Its name reflects that union: “Konoha” refers to the Senju forest represented by Hashirama's Wood Style, while “ha” refers to the Uchiha fan-shaped crest. The Uchiha were consequently entrusted with guarding the village from its founding. 24 386

The Land of Fire's forested terrain and favorable climate made Konoha's homeland the most populous among the Five Great Nations. The village's low-rise, Japanese-style architecture is designed around both livability and practicality. 277 413

Konoha's prosperity contrasts sharply with the poverty of many settlements outside its borders. Following the First Shinobi World War, ordinary villages lacked the means to recover, while Konoha retained advantages from its founding resources and protected location. 12

Political Structure

Konoha maintains an informal rule against making the head of an overly powerful clan Hokage. Village leaders consider clan heads vulnerable to conflicts between clan interests and village duty; this was a decisive reason Hyuga Hiashi was rejected as a successor despite his strength. 386

Minato's selection as Fourth Hokage represented the elevation of civilian-born shinobi within Konoha's political structure. His personal strength, prestige, leadership ability, and lack of clan affiliation made him an acceptable candidate to the council. 386

The Uchiha clan's relationship with Konoha's leadership improved substantially due to Kagura's presence and his bond with Hiruzen Sarutobi. Kagura's status helped the clan gain the higher-ups' trust, while the departure of Uchiha dissidents aligned with Madara reduced internal pressure on Fugaku's leadership. 261 401

History

Second Great Ninja War

The Second Great Ninja War began in Konoha Year 34 as conflicts among the Great Nations escalated into open war, with the Land of Rain becoming the principal battlefield. Konoha deployed major forces under Hiruzen Sarutobi and fought alongside figures including Tsunade, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Hatake Sakumo, and Kagura. 116

At the war's end in Konoha Year 37, Konoha and the other Great Nations suffered a crushing defeat in the Battle of the Valley against Hanzo's scheme and Madara's intervention. Konoha withdrew from the Land of Rain alongside the other defeated powers. 163

Post-war Recovery

The postwar collapse or disappearance of several small-nation ninja villages redirected missions to the Five Great Nations. Konoha experienced increased commissions and economic growth, though its shinobi became heavily occupied with mission work. 175 188

Konoha also became home to a new generation of future shinobi, including Kakashi, Might Guy, Kurenai, Rin, Asuma, and Obito. 188

Third Shinobi World War and Madara's Attack

When the Land of Earth launched an offensive, Konoha sent its main force to defend the Land of Fire border and dispatched Kagura to lead reinforcements to Amegakure. Konoha, Kumogakure, and Amegakure formed an alliance against the Land of Earth and Akatsuki. 303 305

Madara later attacked Konoha to extract the Nine-Tails from Kushina. Kagura ordered the Uchiha clan and Military Police Force to evacuate civilians rather than confront Madara recklessly. 370

The attack devastated large parts of the village and caused civilian deaths despite the Uchiha Guard's evacuation efforts. Kagura used Wood Release to rebuild roughly half of Konoha's homes before reaching his limit. 383 388

Fourth Hokage and Allied Shinobi Force

After the reconstruction crisis, Hiruzen retired and Minato was unanimously selected as Fourth Hokage. 386

Kagura later brought the Uchiha Stone Tablet's information on the Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi to Konoha's leadership. Minato used the threat revealed by the tablet to convene the Five Kage Summit and propose an Allied Shinobi Force against Madara. 401 429

Ten years after the Fourth Great Ninja War, peace among the Five Great Nations remained intact. Kagura's face was carved onto Hokage Mountain for his wartime contributions, and Uchiha Qianyu had become Konoha's Fifth Hokage. 558
